The first picture doesn't look at all like someone securely holding their phone. The left thumb is on the volume button and the right palm pad is touching the display (note the "swipe-up" bar has become visible). Can anyone with one of these phones canonically say whether you can actually hold the phone securely with all these side buttons?

Got my 16 Pro Max today. I predict I will for sure use the button to take the pictures, but the swipe thing for zoom/settings is gimmicky and gives TB vibes. Nobody will use that. Also the button is not very comfortable to press and it makes a weird flash animation on the screen when you activate the camera that I don't care for.

This is what the action button was supposed to be last year, do various actions with it.

Hate that this is on the other side to volume buttons, it's impossible to naturally hold the phone with a good grip while keeping the fingers out of the way of the camera. In all the videos I've seen showing this the phone is not steady while using it.

As a photographer who uses my iPhone everyday to make photographs in the SF Bay Area I'll no doubt be using this feature.

One great side benefit is it will allow me to hold my camera more securely/stably in horizontal mode without having to fuss with having to awkwardly reach for the screen's shutter release with my thumb or index finger. A huge plus.

Thanks MR for the story!

Works fine - though obviously not quite as easy unless you're as dextrous with your thumb as you are with your index finger.
Cool, thanks! My right index finger was broken badly as a kid and is shorter, stubby, and terribly non-dextrous. I was thinking I'll probably end up using my right middle finger or left thumb for this feature, if at all! :(

It’s not meant to be upside down that’s why
Who gets to say what's 'upside down' when using the phone in landscape orientation? Even iOS allows for app rotation in both directions.

I'll add that considering the controls that appear when you use it are correctly orientated either way up, then I'd say it is meant to be used upside down, whichever way that might be.

There is no upside down.

Just like the Action Button most people will trigger the Camera by accident and will have to wait until IOS 18.5 for a decent fix. I have been triggering the Camera slide right on the home screen for about decade now, i would kill for a setting to disable it.
exactly, I'm liking the idea of a shutter button, but do NOT want to launch the camera accidentally....which would result the OPPOSITE effect of a convenient shutter button....it would be rather inconvenient to constantly be shutting the camera down.

Gotta hold back some features for future iPhone models. Don't want to inundate users with too much innovation
You’ve got to remember most people upgrade every 3-4 years, not annually. But they do not do so on the same schedule.

If you were Apple would you release one model every 4 years crammed with upgrades and operate like the games console business or split those upgrades into increments? This way normal customers get the 4-year stack whilst you continue to milk your rabid fan base with annual increments they will buy regardless.

Great article. This addresses all the problems I had with the new button. Thanks for that.

Incredible job with this level of detail in a short amount of time! Curious about what the volume buttons do now that the camera control is here. Will find out in a few hrs.

The press-to-hold function to quickly and easily bring up video recording is going to be very handy and useful. Also, you should be taking most of your pictures in landscape mode to begin with.
