Keep in mind that the idea of capacitive button is to stay out of your way until you need it.
Probably will be active only when the camera is in portrait mode, otherwise an accidentally press is not possible.
IMO it could be useful as it resemble the interaction with a digital cameras and this is the standard for decades

Reading this, I’m suddenly baffled that this “shutter” button, or at least a simpler version of it in that location, hasn’t been a standard feature on iPhones (or most other cell phones, as far as I know) for a decade.

Apple makes the most popular still and video cameras in the world, and to date the shutter button has been on the bottom when you’re holding it to take pictures.

If done well, it could be quite a nice QOL. The less I have to adjust my hold on the phone to do something with the camera that's actually useful, the better.

The capture button isn't going to above the volume keys like this image, it's going to be below the power button. Which means for many people who are used to using the volume button to capture will mean holding the phone the other way round.

Yes and when you shoot holding the phone vertically will feel natural to press, have good grip and your fingers won't cover the lenses.

True: iPhone 17 will be much better than the iPhone 16. I bet on it.

As a person that hold the iPhone with the left hand, I’m worried about the relocation of the 5G antenna.

My hand will cover it completely in this new setup.

I just wish that the volume up and down buttons become capacitive like the Action button on 15Pro.

When in Camera app
  • Up/down for zoom in/out
  • Action button for shutter.
and no need for another button.

Certainly, the lens are then top right which works better as you say.

This is an interesting change.

One of the reasons that the iPhone switched away from a hardware keyboard is that a screen offers near-infinite flexibility. So I'm not sure if a fixed-function button fits with that ethos.

Personally, I'd like to see the entirety of both sides of the phone (mmWave antenna constraints notwithstanding) be capacitive and haptic, with the ability to put any button I want anywhere I want in software. Like adjusting the location of the power and volume buttons to fit my hand. Infinite action buttons!

I can never take a photo using the volume button on the left, so for me the button on the right is better

For a long time Apple insisted that iPhones didn’t need cases.

Besides, part of Apple’s ethos is to break things.

It think cases a big revenue stream for Apple as well.

iPhone Pro Max especially is useless in colder (drier) environments if it doesn't have a case on. That is, if you want to use the phone normally. I mean they will still sell the devices, but the button is gonna be useless.

It's like the infamous TouchBar, but on a phone.

As a photographer… this seems maybe kinda sorta useful.

As an iPhone user… it’s just one more button for me to accidentally hit when i mean to take a screenshot or change the volume. I really don’t think we need more buttons.
As a photographer I would use & actual camera such as the Sony a7Cii

Sure. Thing is, the best camera and all that. So when you don’t happen to have your camera near by but your phone is in your hand, that’s the best camera you have and (in my opinion) it couldn’t hurt to have dedicated controls for at least some of its functions. After all, the camera system has been the primary reason to upgrade iPhones for many generations now.
