The question is whether this tactic will be enough to slow the momentum of local giants like Xiaomi and Huawei and actually reverse the sharp decline in iPhone sales.
It’s not going to slow down xiaomi & huawei
When you see the type of products they sell
In china

People say the 128GB iPhone Pro isn’t worth it — until the price drops to 5,500 CNY (~$763). Then it sells out instantly. Funny how ‘not good’ suddenly becomes ‘good enough’ when the price is right.
You literally said "isn't worth it"...which signifies value at a certain cost. How does that turn into "not good" which is an entirely different metric?

Ok so what if government employees are mandated to use Chinese phones
Companies here go there employees iPhones to use do no difference there.

What is wrong with that
When governments in the west do that with products all the time

Nothing at all is wrong with that. And is expected. I suspect the US has a similar policy for government employees using only US phones for government use.

I'm just explaining why Apple sales have fallen in China over the last year due to that mandate being put in place a year ago. And, that Chinese citizens are now strongly ecounraged to purchase Chinese phones (where that wasn't the case one year ago). Thus... Apple iPhone sales have fallen in China over the last year.

Isn’t that called “dumping “. Selling cheaper in other country than in your own?
So Apple can lower prices in Latinamerica, just chooses not to and we have to over pay 30%. Nice. Ñ

I think people forget that the CCP does not allow its members in political offices to own an iPhone, which has really killed iPhone sales in China.
Even if this were true (it's not) what percentage of the Chinese population do you think is in a political office? iPhone is down 50% YoY in China. Are half of all Chinese citizens officeholders?

I think if I were Chinese, and Apple moved it manufacturing from China to elsewhere...I would not feel any need to purchase an Apple product. Apple may very well see a long term sales drop of their products in China.

The iPhone is beyond stale at this point. I look forward to the cliche “good morning here’s our latest iPhone built from the ground up with an upgraded 48 MP camera. “

Apple, do more, do better.
I recently switched back to iPhone from about six years on Android. Prior, I was on an iPhone for seven years. I purchased the 13 Pro Max refurbished from Apple and I will say that the product has now evolved not quite as much compared to my earlier iPhones (4, 5s, 7, 10 (work phone). I needed the 13 because I need a physical SIM (although it's a single SIM + eSIM).

I needed the 13 Pro Max because my OnePlus 12 was starting to disappoint me after a year. I still am not hopeful for the 17 Pro Max if a) the 16 series has been a disappointment and b) the 13 allegedly being the "GOAT" of this current run of iPhones being underwhelming if that's the best that's on offer.

Good. Apple needs to be humbled.
I think Apple was humbled when Tim Cook was laughed at and heard the crowd grumble at the last live Apple event when the $1,000 monitor stand was introduced.

They've strayed away from live events since having opted for polished, pre-recorded events.

Apple simply has boring phones in China.

  • No satellite calling/SMS like Huawei Mate 60.
  • No mechanical aperture camera like Huawei Pura 70.
  • No trifold like Huawei Mate XT.

If you had $999 to spend in China, you would be crazy to get an iPhone 16 Pro. The Pura 70 is the same price, comes with 6.8-inch OLED, 512GB storage, mechanical aperture, and can send images via satellite.

Is it possible that the reason behind Tesla’s 45% decline in sales in Germany, while German car manufacturers experienced a 20% increase in BEVs in April, is the same: German/Chinese consumer’s pride and their current boycott of American products? Tariffs is one thing but national pride can hurt even longer.

The last live Apple event was the iPhone 11 introduction several months after WWDC 2019 when the $1000 monitor stand was announced. They stopped doing live events in 2020. I don't think it was out of embarrassment, though. There was something else going on at the time, if you recall.

Nobody else in the world has 5 minutes charging like BYD. What competitive EVs do Germany produce? VW? Same with American EVs. The bare bones interior Model Y? The competition has wraparound displays on the dash and LiDAR as standard.

You should carefully read my question: Is it pride why Germans buy german cars and not Tesla? Is it pride why Chinese no longer prefer Apple products? It has nothing to do with 5 minutes charging time (for how many kWh?)

That’s what happens when they release crap and weird colours that don’t even match the name or they all look one like the other (50 shades of sh*t), I literally know everyone who skips upgrading just because of the colour. Go into the Apple store just to be underwhelimely disappointed!
The best overall variety iPhone colour line up was the 7th gen (jet black 😍, it also got the first flagship Product red!) & 13th gen (sierra blue & pine green)!

They did nothing for the spring event Apple is truly lazy asf of course sells should drop.

Funny how? Isn’t that how it works with practically everything? Would you buy life extending pill for 1 billion? No. For 1 dollar? Yes.

With that logic why is US the biggest market?

Government incentives aren't helping Apple, but neither is their abysmal support for non-English languages in any new feature they roll out. Of course Chinese people are going to go with Chinese phones now that they're basically as good as iPhones, they're literally built for them. The Chinese market is an afterthought to Apple. Not saying that's right or wrong, it's just true. They're an American company who gets most of their money from Americans.

Completely reasonable mandate. How many Chinese phones do you think get deployed by the US government to federal workers?

American people refuse to get out of the mindset that Chinese products are cheap and subsidized by the govt. It was true once upon a time when the Chinese government wanted to push local R&D and innovation. Now they have solid companies like Huawei. They are still subsidized but not as much as the westerners think. Once upon a time China was only capable of cheap products. But now they cover the whole spectrum. From the cheapest flimsiest stuff to the most technologically advanced and complex products. We have underestimated them for far too long.

I think that has been the problem. The western mindset has been "oh we are the God's of innovation no one can touch us. We are superior and everyone else is at our feet"

All the while the West spent all their money on military research and other stuff that does not really help the day to day. China kept its head down and improved all their sectors over the last decade. From construction to manufacturing to design and innovation.

The corporate greed of the west and the habit to suck every penny from the customer with minimal improvements is now costing them.

In the current economic climate, Chinese just don't have the money for expensive goods anymore. The Chinese and Western press is pushing the idea that Chinese buying local is a patriotic thing, a quality thing, or a preference, but in reality many people just can't afford Western goods anymore.

If you talk to Chinese manufacturers, they're hitting export markets hard because domestic demand has been flatlining for a while now. I know of at least 2 forklift makers that have huge export pushes due to the lack of domestic demand.

It's hard to tell because all the statistics coming out of China are suspect, so you have to read between the lines. But yeah, China isn't doing so well. Those property crises really hit them where it hurts.

Western brands have relied on the Chinese market as cash cows for a while now (high end electronics, cars, fashion), seeming to rely on the cachet of being seen as more technologically advanced, luxurious or a status symbol to justify the increased prices over the domestic brands. Unfortunately for a lot of companies, the Chinese have developed their own advanced and high end brands that can undercut the Western brands on price are starting to eat into marketshare. See the smartphone market and car/EV market for good examples of this. It seems like a lot of Western brands and their investors are in a bit of denial about the issue.
A lot of the users of those Western brands are in denial as well.

Sales might increase for the time being with this tactic. But it will be interesting to see what will happen if there is a price increase with the new iPhones launching later this year.
