I bet they’ll use A18 and A18 Pro names, just like they do with their M-series silicon. The fact they added Pro moniker to A17 corroborates this, because it can’t be just A17 on the Pro models while the standard ones have a Bionic. Also, A18 (in standard iPhone 16 series) would then imply it’s a successor to A17, an improvement, but obviously won’t be since it will probably lack Ray Tracing, additional RAM and such. Lastly, I don’t believe they can improve their silicon “twice” in one year to warrant such naming scheme, which is another reason why they added Pro to the A17.
I think I’ve found my new profession.

I, an analyst

My guess is that they're just going to rename it as the A18, like what they did for the Apple Watch S7 & S8
Doubt so. The A17 will appear in the next iPad mini and future base iPad.

A18 will be a separate design, otherwise the A17 Pro would have just been called A17, with the Pro suffix introduced to the A18 next year.

Pretty sure this is the direction they going. The Probiotics name scheme has a more wow factor then 'just' Pro. They better nit be introducing Max/Ultra variants if they not solving the heat issues.

Not really. They probably just rebranding it just like the S6 was in S7 and S8 but rebranded to their equivalent generations.
But the other day it said a new chip rather than a rebranding. So it is news it will get a chip just for next years phone rather than using last years chip.

Serious question. Is being one of these analysts a full time job? As in, they get enough of an income to live on saying these things that today's elementary school iPhone users know how to say? Or do they do actually productive things other than this? I want to understand.

One would be able to deduce the A18 will arrive next year.... and it's not surprising they would exclude the A17 Pro from the base model. They are giving up some equity in supply chain i.e. using leftover A17 Pro in future model but it's obvious they want to keep segmentation between the Pro and non-Pro. In other words, they can't make gains year-over-year that would justify the upsell to a new "Pro" chip every year vs getting last year's in base model.

I wonder why I continue playing market analyst on MacRumors when I could get paid for it, saying the exact same things.

Glass is an excellent thermal insulator. I hope they return to aluminium backs, and then connect the heat generating elements to the entire backside for better thermal dissipation. Less fragile than glass too, a lot of their customers protect the phone by putting it in some kind of case making thermal dissipation even more of an issue.

Exactly what I was thinking.

This is akin to saying something like this: rumor has it that the next iPhone will be the iPhone 16 and 16 Pro.

Yeah. No ****, Sherlock. LOL

I wonder if there really is an iPhone Ultra coming next year, with an Ultra chipset (basically an A18 Pro derivative with some changes for additional Ultra exclusive features but otherwise same CPU/GPU performance as A18 Pro).

A lot of people in this comments section are saying this is obvious, despite it meaning that Apple would be jumping from the A16 Bionic to the A18 chip for the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus next year. That would be a noteworthy, unique decision. I knew the comments would play out this way, but I appreciate the few people in here that actually understand the nuance here instead of just posting something like "captain obvious."

Now the iPhone 16* will** have the same number chip*** as the 16 Pro!**** Revolutionary!*****

*name unconfirmed
**validity uncertain
***chip is not of equal performance
****name also unconfirmed
*****misinformation

Why waste time making articles like this? Like no **** it’s gonna be called a18.. no **** captain obvious ..
A17 + A18 Pro
A17 (16) + A17 Pro (16 Plus) + A18 Pro
A17 (16) + A18 (16 Plus) + A18 Pro
A18 + A18 Pro
A18 (fake, just a renamed A17) + A18 Pro

See, endless possibilities even before A18 Ultra rumors. We need weekly articles to cover these combinations in the coming months :)

Exactly my point too. A whole new chip just for the cheaper model is big news. Better than using last years chip isn’t it?
