Really? Your going to risk damaging a $2000 mobile? Now more than ever people are needing phone protection.
I would rather pay for AppleCare than a high-end case. I have only had to replace my phone one time since going caseless and that was the back glass from a nasty fall on asphalt.

Good. These iPhones aren’t cheap, and ceramic shields upgrades are making a difference. iPhone 15 Pro Max survived a 2 years old baby misuse for a whole year, so far.
I wish my teen was as gentle as your toddler. Watched their new 15 Pro Max come out of their pocket and gently fall 3’ to a soft wood floor that shattered the screen. $450 at the Apple store so I have to call bull-donkey on all these claims. Really the most fragile phone owned since maybe the 3 or 3s. Sad to say

I hope that 50% improvement includes micro scratch resistance, because my iPhone 15 Pro Max's screen is among the worst I've used in recent history.
Of course it won't. Manufacturers are going for crack and shatter resistance which means it will scratch easier. The 50% improvement is compared to the 1st gen ceramic glass (iPhone 12 series) not last year's display.

I've never managed to actually damage an iPhone screen in all these years. But some years did start putting a screen protector on to stop the oleophobic coating from rubbing off and making the screen look like a greasy mess.

How about a +50% wear resistant oleophobic coating?

Scratch resistance and crack resistance are at odds with each other in glass. When one goes up the other goes down. What do they mean and does that mean it’ll be less prone to cracking or scratching? Can’t be both.

50% tougher... 10% thinner... 18% faster...
I'm so tired of all this BS 😤.
...Apple marketing: and just as reasonably priced as the last model!!! ... (we're so rich, err, we mean happy for you...)

In other news, yes, even with the various claims, I always install a screen protect shield onto my iPhone. The first iPhone I had the store do it, subsequent year(s) I ordered and installed myself. It's cheap scratch damage protection for an expensive phone, even if marketing claims say the glass is whatever protective.
And thanks <FoxyKaye> for the reference to the Zagg brand shield, I'd not known of them before - I'll give them a look for when I order my next iPhone (probably this year's 16 or 16 pro).

Always be wary when you hear something described by percentages and not raw numbers or some other method. “59% tougher” sounds great but what does it mean?

Yep. I agree, my 15 Pro scratched so easily. That is the endless challenge with glass. The harder it is to break/shatter the softer it tends to be an easier to scratch.

Do you use a case? I’ve noticed this year, after going ceaseless, that its way easier scratch the screen.

I have the rather common silicon case.

It does have a raised lip around the display, probably around 1/16" that no doubt helps keep the display glass not rubbing against large flat surfaces like tables/desks/etc if placed down.

The silicon case also keeps it snugly fitting in my shirt pockets. A plus when I'm making photos of people on the street in San Francisco, and concerned about it being quickly jacked out of my pocket by passing potential thieves.

No point advertising how hard the ceramic glass is... at the end of the day, the screen underneath it can still break without breaking the glass... my iPhone 11 dropped quite a few times, no cracks, no dents, but the screen started bleeding horizontal lines top and bottom...

They never seem to focus on scratch resistance. Apparently people don't care about scratches. But I do see a lot of people with inexplicably shattered displays.

My iPhone 15 Pro without case and without screenprotector is a pleasure to use but the screen is scratched all over. Like it’s made of butter. While using you don’t see it though.

I've been using my 15PM extensively since release, with *no screen protector*. Not a single screen scratch. Not even a micro scratch.
YMMV. I never used any screen protector in any of my previous iPhones since the 3GS. I upgrade my phone every year (probably except this year). So I guess my experience, although anecdotal, is an indication of something.

I was really shocked when I saw the scratch too. It happened about half a year after I bought it. That’s really bad.

Good to know. Any improvement to protect the screen from drops and scratches is good.

It's this kind of iterative improvement that makes the iPhones so good year after year. Stuff like this might not be compelling enough to upgrade from the 15's, but by the time you're ready to upgrade, the cumulative improvements will add up to a nice little phone.
Exactly!
I'll be upgrading from a 13 to a 16.
Quite the upgdrade.

Every year they're tougher and yet I dropped my 13 pro from while sitting at my couch and the whole screen shattered more than my self esteem at my first imaginary prom night.
