Most can’t even tell. Gimmick-
That's not the point. It's a baseline at that price point. "Most people" probably couldn't tell the difference between a photo taken with an iPhone 6 and an iPhone 16. They're just using the camera(s) to take snapshots. Yet Apple invests significant time and effort in improving and expanding the capabilities of the cameras in the lowest iPhone on up each year because that is a baseline for modern smartphone development. For some people it matters and it is why they choose to buy an iPhone.

If your phone is $799 and up, it should have a high-refresh screen just like it should have a quality camera setup just like it should be made of premium materials just like it should have a whole bunch of things. Some things will matter to some buyers, some thing will not.

It's sort of like that old saw that Microsoft Word is too complicated, it doesn't need all those features! But if you ask everyone in a room what features matter to them and what features should be cut or ignored, you'll find no one agrees. Everyone needs or wants specific things, and at the price they should get them.

Long story short my 15 Pro Max was stolen and the only option I could afford was add another line to my AT&T account and the best deal was for a 16 Plus (Ultramarine) and I LOVE IT. There are some trade offs but there are definitely some improvements. The lighter weight is nice, the color is SO beautiful I get compliments and I don’t notice the ProMotion. I love it. I recommend.

I returned my 16 pm after a lot of research on the 16 plus. Weight was a big factor. Love the lighter form. Don’t miss 120 hz personally. Like that it’s a new design with cameras being different. Like that macro was added. Battery seems to smoke the PM. Overall am thrilled with 16 plus having had nothing but PM phones since they came out.

if you can forego the third camera and promotion, 16+ is a terrific buy IMO for reasons you mentioned - battery life and weight.

And having something different design wise from the same half decade of stuff, albeit still pretty similar. But the back looks distinctly like a new device instead of an iPhone 12 Pro of some type all over again.

Black regular >> Black pro color as well (again, IMO)

I just upgraded today from my absolutely beloved iPhone Xʀ running iOS 12 to my iPhone 16 Plus running iOS 18.3.1, which, as of March 5, 2025, is the latest iOS version. I haven’t been fully updated since I bought my iPhone… 6s!!! Running iOS 9.3.4 back in 2016, as iOS 12.3.1 was NOT the latest the day I got my Xʀ.

I hadn’t seen this on an iPhone of mine for the past 9 years. Wow.

Apart from that, it’s too early to tell. The camera is an absurd upgrade coming from the single-camera, no portrait, feature-skimped when compared to the 11 and onwards yet absolute beauty that is my iPhone Xʀ running iOS 12.

Compatibility is now restored and I’m happy. Doesn’t feel markedly different in my preliminary testing, which speaks to iOS 12’s quality on the A12 Bionic. Haven’t played with all of its features yet, but the speakers are way better. This is, of course, a very preliminary opinion.

Well, I had this for a few days (6, exactly):

But sadly all good things come to an end:

This aside, a great upgrade almost a week in. I really like the camera upgrades but I maintain my opinion that in terms of general quality my iPhone Xʀ on iOS 12 is up-to-par.

I like that even though it has a larger screen than the first Pro Max iPhone I ever tried (the 11 Pro Max), it’s… surprisingly comfortable and it doesn’t feel larger than the Xʀ, even though it is.

Frankly I thought this aspect would be a little more annoying than it is.
