These iPhone updates remind me of that sound when you scrape a spoon in an empty yogurt container.
please don’t get cocky. If you know something about cameras a zoom lens means a lens with a changing focal lenght. Standard zoom refers to a 24-105, tele zoom usually 70-200 or 100-400. A telephoto lens can be either a Zoom lens or a prime/ fixed focal lens, like in the iPhone. The iPhone has 0 zoom lenses and 1 telephoto lens. end of story. Please return your dictionary to the 1800s where it belongs
It’s about linguistics. You can gatekeep language all you want but it changes with time and there’s nothing you can do.please don’t get cocky. I don’t gatekeep anything. Have been shooting dslr since 2008 and have been active in photo forums since then. No one refers to a telephoto prime lens as a zoom, sorry. It’s about linguistics. You can gatekeep language all you want but it changes with time and there’s nothing you can do.
A zoom lens is a system of camera lens elements for which the focal length (and thus angle of view) can be varied, as opposed to a fixed-focal-length (FFL) lens (prime lens).
If they did give the mini the same (CPU, camera) spec as the Pro model, would've sold a lot more. We want a normal sized phone but not at an inferior / 2nd class spec. They do listen. That's why they're getting bigger. Also, why they stopped selling the baby sized phones. Because no one wanted them.
Yes, that’s a zoom *lens*. I’m talking about the verb “to zoom”, which in daily usage means exactly what I sent three posts agoI don’t gatekeep anything. Have been shooting dslr since 2008 and have been active in photo forums since then. No one refers to a telephoto prime lens as a zoom, sorry.
edit: here’s wikipedia for you
Same here.If all above pan out, I will upgrading my 13 Pro to a 16 Pro next year.
Yes, you were and no one else. The context was clearly the telephoto of the iPhone being called a zoom lens, which it isn’t. Have a good dayYes, that’s a zoom *lens*. I’m talking about the verb “to zoom”, which in daily usage means exactly what I sent three posts ago
Doesn't match what the initial comment was:Yes, you were and no one else. The context was clearly the telephoto of the iPhone being called a zoom lens, which it isn’t. Have a good day
but go off I guess. Not even a mention of the word "lens". And it's not like they didn't write "The iPhone 15 Pro Max's tetraprism Telephoto lens system with 5× optical zoom" (emphasis mine). Please stop saying "5x optical zoom". [...] Zoom means fast movement. You know, zoom zoom? Stringing "zoom" after "optical" is a lie.
What you have to remember is the general public and most of the users of phones are not photographers at all, they only understand simple terms like zooming in on something and taking a snap of the moon or their pet or kid.I don’t gatekeep anything. Have been shooting dslr since 2008 and have been active in photo forums since then. No one refers to a telephoto prime lens as a zoom, sorry.

Exactly, especially when you consider that phones are essentially just getting longer, with an even longer but - almost - not wider display. Will the extra .20 really make a difference for the screen? Seems too small of a jump. Or is it just to put more powerful hardware inside?
I'd almost agree, but Apple wants to keep their new phone models as similar as possible worldwide. After all, except for the physical SIM slot in some models, the iPhone 15 series are pretty much the same model worldwide physically (except for antenna tuning for different markets). If that’s the case, Apple may have to switch to lighter aluminum on the Pro models to keep the weight down. It’s also possible that Apple may have a special, thicker European model planned and a slimmer model which doesn’t have a user-removable battery for all other markets including the US. With the addition of USB-C, it made sense to have one model for all markets, but a thicker iPhone might reduce the appeal of the iPhone in certain markets like Asia.
Not going to happen. They want to push people towards the more expensive phones. People had the option for a lower spec, cheaper small phone and that was as close as they were going to get. No one bought it, so Apple quit chasing that market. If they did give the mini the same (CPU, camera) spec as the Pro model, would've sold a lot more. We want a normal sized phone but not at an inferior / 2nd class spec.
Sorry, you can say whatever you like but it's not an optical zoom. As others have said, anyone who knows cameras knows this has a specific meaning in the context of camera lenses - which your own dictionary definition admits of (did you click that zoom lens definition?). Using the quote you provided above, this is absolutely not "5x optical zoom." It's optical telephoto. Apple wants us to think otherwise for marketing purposes. Please return your dictionary to the 1800s where it belongs
