I'd be interested in seeing other people's experience. I've also been only charging my iPhone 16 to 80% and my health is at 98%, with 286 cycles and purchased in early December 2024. I only use wired charging, but I also use my hotspot continuously most days of the week so it can still get very warm. For me, a 2% degrading of the battery after a full year is definitely worth only charging it to 80%.

Slow charging my car or phone to 80% helps reduce heat and battery aging, I’m sure this won’t be an issue so much in the future but it’s a scientifically proven fact with the current lithium ion battery technology in Apples phones.

My data point:

iPhone 15 Pro
Manufacture Date: August 2023
First Use Date: October 2023
Cycle Count: 609
Battery Health: 88%

no limits to charging, fwiw

tendency was to wait to charge fully (to 100%) after phone battery fell below 5%, often @1%.

cheers

I have a 15 pro max with 333 cycles only at 94% max capacity left.
but: the phone is 1year and 8 months old.

How can it be that so many 16pm users have like 300charges already within the first year ?
The longevity of the pro max batteries comes also with the longer lasting charges for me, meaning I can have less charges in a year, so that the life of the batteries is extended upto twice as long ..

15 Pro Max, 80% change limit most of the time. Sometimes I will increase it to 100% if I know it’s going to be a long day.

My 15 Pro Max, now almost two years with more or less the same number of cycles (440 to be exact) is at 84% health now for a long time with no restrictions on charging. Always set to charge to 100%. Not sure whether the feature is very useful.

Well those numbers are actually not that good imo

Why was this on main page? This should be a thread.

1. It isnt a rumor, or news
2. It is strongly opinionated
3. It reads like a forum thread - only thing it’s missing is a poll

Why is MacRumors posting this on front page? Slow news day?

Atleast make it an interesting thread topic… maybe a “post photos of your dog” thread?
It’s one of the most interesting front page posts I’ve seen in a while. Certainly better than unsubstantiated rumours.

Interesting, Julie. I have an old iPhone 13 Pro and it's only down to 84% capacity. It doesn't show the cycles, but there'd be plenty! I bought it refurbed from ReeBelo 4 years ago with original battery. I charged every night to 100%

Probably not when Apple says battery at 80% for 1000 cycles. Maybe it will remain at 84% for a long time. But not sure whether everyone is having higher battery health along with the higher cycle counts.

Maybe the heat generated will also have a role. I use MagSafe predominantly. It heats up quite a lot and I often see charging on hold at 80% or even 90%. So maybe my lower battery health might not be due to not restricting charging at 80%.

Interesting! I have a similar setup, but charged to 80%

iPhone 15 Pro
Manufacture Date: July 2023
First Use Date: September 2023
Cycle Count: 748
Battery Health: 89%

I'll probably switch to 100% after reading your data.

I think the “battery health” on my 16 Pro Max is quite OK. Haha.
I think that my behaviour is quite sustainable. I want to keep my devices for as long as possible and take good care of them regarding the high prices and the state of planet earth.
Also no degenerated apps like Facebook, Instagram, TikTok here which drives people into swiping all day long.

I remember MacRumors posting a guide on how to save battery life years ago. I stick to this guide.
Switched off many checkboxes in location services etc.

Interesting isn't it?

iPhone 16 Pro. - For me, I manually set the limit to 85% maximum charge and I configured a Siri shortcut that turns on battery saver mode at 80% or below.

Maximum capacity 98%, cycle count 342. Notably, very very seldom using a fast charger. Most of the time on an old slow magsafe charger.

Although the website called Mac Rumors, personally I never come here for the rumours. I would prefer to have zero rumors here. I come here for information and details such as this article.

For overnight charging I would set it to 90%. I think that's the best compromise between convenience and prolonged battery health.

Personally I just top up here and there during the day when it's convenient. This works well for my circumstances. I never charge my devices overnight to 100% if I can avoid it.

I have the 15 Pro, charging to 80% most of the time, only up to 100% when I plan a day out.

I’m at 91% battery health after 400 charge cycles. Numbers similar to everybody else, but plan to keep 4 years at least so every little helps. It doesn’t make a difference for me on days I’m at home.

Wouldn’t be surprised if wireless charging degrades it more than going to 100%, I only charge by wire.

15 Pro Max, without any charging limit, and the optimised battery charging set to off as well. The health is 82% after 463 cycles.
