I have turned off optimized battery charging as well. I get a new phone under apple care multiple times a year so it makes no sense to preserve battery.

Picked up an iPhone 16 Pro Max last fall. Has 294 cycles and is at 100% battery health.

I have zero care in the world about charge limits and optimizations when charging. I suspect it's a placebo effect for some people. I charge to max and charge when I want, even topping off an 80% battery if needed before heading out.

Hot take: I'd actually argue that charge limit and optimize charging cause damage to your phone. In theory you have less of a charge when you're out and about and thus more likely to run the battery low where the real damage occurs.

iPhone 15 Pro
- no charge limit (100%)
- optimized charging on
- 722 charge cycles over 24 months
- battery health: 87% of maximum capacity

Battery micro-managing and hand wringing is just the most boring hobby imaginable. Will gladly pay for a new battery when this one isn't working for me anymore (actually won't have to because of AppleCare). Same with my MacBook Air. The battery is a consumable part.

This. Though out of curiosity, do you ever do anything that gets it pretty hot? Or have much heat exposure in general? Yours definitely appears to be holding up better than average.

Employing this option sounds a lot like: “Since I know my battery will lose capacity in the future, I’m going to pretend my battery is dying NOW.”

Just use and enjoy your phone, and have AppleCare. You can replace the battery later and enjoy all your battery life until then.

On my 16PM I always used a 25w magsafe puck to charge and almost never let it drop below 20%. A year later im still at 100% health after 180 cycles. Just bought an AIR, so I hope the next owner appreciates it! LOL

Exactly my thinking, if you never use the full capacity, what is the point in preserving it.

The amount of people doing this but then using a wireless charger is hilarious too, a conservative/preventative measure coupled with a damaging method of charging.

The other thing worth pointing out is just knowing a bit of battery health science. A lithium ion battery is at its happiest and most healthy if kept as close to 50% as possible. So whilst keeping your max charge capacity at 80% is healthier than 100%, this is offset by your usage, if by dropping to an 80% max charge you then end up using your battery to the point you get close to 0% regularly then you could be doing more harm, and letting it get to 0% and shutting off is even more damaging than a 100% charge.
This makes my 16 Pro Max even more impressive. I kept it near 100% at almost all times, charged overnight, and almost exclusively used MagSafe to charge..... still 100% capacity after a year.

In case anyone's going to tabulate all the comments. IPhone 16 Pro, first used Sept 2024 and kept at 90%. Battery health normal, max capacity 98%, cycle count 286. Wireless charge overnight always and usually while driving. During the day I plug it in occasionally to top it off.

I work from home so I don't stress much one way or the other and have a MagSafe battery pack that lives in my backpack for whenever I miscalculate my need.

For anyone thinking it's worth it. Tell me what's better...

80% capacity day 1.
94% capacity 2 years in.
Are you conflating capacity with charge? A "day 1" battery has a 100% capacity, but may only be charged to 80%.
I don't know of anyone whose battery is at 100% 24 hours a day-- we use the phone. It may be at 60% later in the day, but that is CHARGE, not CAPACITY.

iPhone 16 Pro Max set @ 90% charge limit. 207 cycles since October 24 using exclusively wireless charging and health is still at 100%.

Yes, but you're artificially making it an 80% capacity day one by using it that way. It's pointless.

I recently bought an iPhone 16 Pro, and until now, I've been using the automatic "optimized charging" mode. I use a 20W Apple charger and that's it. I just avoid letting the charge drop below 20%.

Is my 15 Pro broken? ;) Twelve months after purchase the cycle count is 169, battery capacity 100%. I limit the charge to 95%. I got AppleCare+ partly because I expected to need a battery replacement. Doesn’t look like that will be necessary anytime soon.

My iPad, on the other hand, is six months old and the battery is already down to 97%.

I just upgraded from an iPhone 15, which spent the first year at the 80% charging limit and the second at 90%. My battery health is sitting at 96%. That's after two years! I gave this phone to my daughter, who should really be able to get another solid two years out of it.

16 Pro, 225 cycles, 100% battery health. Set it to 85% with just the occasional bumping up to 100% when I was traveling but 99.9% of the time it was at 85%. I leave it on a Magsafe charger while I'm working so it stays at 85% most of the day before I take it off after work, back on the charger overnight, so it's really only not on the charger maybe 5 hours a day.
