you can't call "false advertising" on something that wasn't and still isn't advertised at all.
Exactly.

I do remember quite clearly that several media outlets and tech news sites were jumping on this story.

But there was no mention of it during the keynote or on the iPhones 16 product pages.

The only thing Apple claimed was 25W using a new generation of MagSafe pucks (and a 30W or higher charger), and then the usual “50% from 0% in 30 minutes with a 20W or higher charger”.

Apple never said anything about 45W wired.

Can you link to an Apple page or statement by an Apple representative who said it can charge at 45W?
Nobody can because that never happened.

I questioned this story since its inception as it didn’t match with the claims that Apple did make during the iPhones 16 presentation, stating 25W with (next gen.) MagSafe and 30W charger, and 50% in 30 minutes wired with a 20W charger.

Apple never said 45W charging.

Do you all find marketing pictures of Desert Titanium to be misleading. The freaking thing is Rose Gold when i saw it in the store, I had to cancel my order. Marketing on this phone has photos of bronze

It’s not that hard to understand… the usb-C bus can take in 45W now, but the charge controller will only pass ~30W of that to the battery. If the phone is doing something intensive it may show a metered draw greater than 30W. However in those cases heat is usually becoming an issue as well, so the charging/total consumption will probably never actually reach (or at least stay at) 45W unless some kind of active cooling is involved.

Also… Batteries can’t chemically fast charge when they are really cold, and degradation (among other risks) accelerates when they are too hot. There is always an optimal window for stuff like this, with both upper and lower extremes/consequences.

Such high watts kill the battery anyway. I am still charging my 14PM using a 12W charger if in a hurry, 5W charger at night.

Wasn’t it first a rumor and then supposedly later “confirmed” and “official” or whatever? So why are we back to calling it a rumor and not just false advertising?
Because Apple never said or confirmed any of this?
Can you point your source of information to claim they are false advertising this feature?

This is not true. Tesla conducted long-term tests of lithium ion batteries, charging through Superchargers at 250 kWh over 1000 cycles and it showed no added battery degradation compared to slow charging.
The key is never to stay charged at 100%. That’s why Tesla introduced optional 80% and other limits, a feature that Apple has recently copied.
Don’t Teslas have active cooling for their batteries though?

By the way, a reason why the Galaxy 24 Ultra can do 45 watt charging is the fact the phone has a vapor chamber cooling system.

I love the idea of vapour chamber cooling, I just imagine little white puffs of steam coming out of the phone while it’s doing work :)

Exactly
That is how I almost always charge my phone. Seems to work just fine. The battery has outlived the time I have owned the phone. I suspect that almost everyone here gets a new phone before the battery is even close to needing replacement. Find something more important to salivate over rather than battery charging. Use the device and move on.
I’m talking about how charging overnight is a fire hazard

Apple need to reduce the price for some of their charger. And US had a foldable 35W compact while UK is still stuck with 20W.

Mine peaked at 39 watts with battery at 40% charge. Thing charges so fast it went up a percent a minute or so!

Wired charging is more or less same as 15 Pro. But good to see improvement in MagSafe charging speeds

Are people blaming Apple for a rumour started by an analyst a few weeks before the iPhone launch, even though the rumoured feature isn't part of the official specifications and Apple never communicated anything about its existence?

God Level of Entitledness is finally here.

on one hand you have people that say the charging can’t be at its fastest speeds when the phone is in use or heating up, and then in the same thread you have other people saying that the fastest charging only kicks in specifically when the phone IS doing other demanding things

Nobody can get their story straight on this and part of the blame lies with Apple who is never transparent about how these things actually work.
Apple has been loving the secrecy since seemingly forever. And this one is just another issue on the record. Muddy the water I suppose.

The iPhone 15 and older models were charged using 9V.
The new iPhone 16, along with newer iPad models, utilizes 15V.
Laptops initially began with 14.5V (MacBook Retina 2015), but they are typically by 20V and have now progressed to higher voltages, up to 48V.
The USB-PD specification has undergone changes over time.

I think the marketing images look exactly like the phone. It honestly looks nothing like Rose Gold to me. The titanium band looks bronze and the back glass panel looks like a muted champagne color.

Yes, Apple wants its customers to just use the phone and not try to manage the charging experience.

Has memory really been a problem? Ever need to charge the phone in 15 minutes? For most the answer is no.
Yes, memory is a problem for very recent phones that can’t run Apple intelligence due to insufficient RAM, and it will probably be a problem for the current phones as the AI advances and requires more memory.

As for charging speed everybody I know now and again need to charge their phone fast. It is definitely a useful thing to have, more than most of the nonsense Apple introduced in the last few years.

Right, but as someone who keeps up with the blogs and rumormill and such, just like the site we’re on, I pretty clearly recall 1. The announcement of this rumor, and 2. Multiple subsequent proclamations that it was actually a new feature of the pro models, so calling it a rumor again is a really strange way of backpedaling. Really, let’s just call it gaslighting.

Yeah... the problem has grown exponentially in the last decade.

There’s nothing wrong with charging ur phone overnight. Been doing it for years and no problems. Lol
There is nothing wrong with charging overnight, however since iPhones have such poor battery life many people need to charge again at some point during the day even if the phone was fully charged in the morning. And during the day nobody can plug the phone for hours, one needs the phone to charge fast so they can get on with their life and business.
