Good thing because 5G has been perhaps the biggest technology deception for me for the last 2 years.
It's not been much faster than LTE so far...
That is not the technology, that is your provider. It doesn't have to be like that.

What this graph shows me is the network operators have started throttling upload a lot more. It used to be symmetrical.
They’re taking a page out of the cable companies book. I have 500 Mbps download - and only 20 Mbps upload. Before I changed my plan I had 400/40. The cable company decided to lower upload to 20 Mbps - just because they can.

Warsaw, Poland, 15 pro max
That’s nice. I get about the same download speed on my iPhone 13 Pro on 5G.
Wow! I just saw it used about 1.9 GB of data to take the download speed.
That's insane and if you add the data from the upload speed that's a whopping 2 GB of data just for a speed test.

I hate these speed tests. They are so poorly organized (and, disclaimer, I wrote for magazines and performed network tests for over a decade).

Reality is very different from speedtest and speedsmart and ookta - even on the same device.

Case in point - Verizon "trial" speeds were easily 20-30% faster than after I signed up, on the top tier plan.
And now AT&T bullst "turbo" add-on "adds back" the speed I lost.
[I have dual SIM active on my 15 Pro Max - running both - and previously on 14 Pro]

In my village, I now get 1.2Gbps on Verizon, and 200-300Mbps on AT&T.
At home, it's 200Mbps VZ, and 400+ on AT&T, but signal strength is all over the place on AT&T.

I was about to say. The results in the article don't seem to be limited by the phone but rather the carrier. This from my iPhone 12 Pro a couple of years ago:

I think you guys are missing the point of the article… it’s saying that based on those specific network averages for previous model iPhones, it’s giving a decent speed boost. So in theory, you should see an addition 20% or more speed boost based on your 1100 you get if you compared them side by side doing the same test on that network.

Not sure why that’s so hard to understand lol. They didn’t say this is the new max speed of the 16 pros. It’s showing the above average results for those networks in the u.s

Clearly it is hard to understand, I don’t see that like that at all in the article. And no I wouldn’t see a further boost as the network has limited the speed as it is. 🤷‍♂️

Or could it be… network operators splitting up their spectrum to allocate more to download instead of upload? Your phone also connects to different bands (trading download for better upload and vice versa) and network conditions vary second to second, so one speed test is not exactly comparable to another even in the same location.

Super excited about this. I’m on a ATT family plan (so I don’t pay for my service), but ATT is trash around my area. If I can get better reception and better speeds that would be welcomed.

Will this help with building penetration? Or is this just speed related? My service absolutely stinks inside my office, in the middle of downtown Manhattan with Verizon..... Had the same issue with T-Mobile. It gets a little better if I force my phone on to LTE, but still pretty dismal.
Same with AT&T around manhattan / jersey city if inside the building. I could careless about better speed, will take 50mb instead of 300+ if i can get a STABLE connection. it's basically unusable because the connection is so unstable. Full disclosure: I have the old intel modem iphone pro, so am really hoping after switching to qualcomm it will improve.

In china/japan, i was using my wife's newer iphone that she has bunch local sim cards for, and speed is crazy fast and stable at 5G, regardless if inside building or not and i confirmed it's cellular 5g by turning off wifi. Just couldnt believe how stable they are, compare to here in NYC.

I got 971 down and 18.4 up on T-Mobile on an iPhone 14 Pro over the weekend. I think we are dependent more on the networks than the phone itself for higher speeds. Some areas have a lot more available bandwidth dependent on your provider. This was a popular vacation spot with a lot of people, but still got amazing performance.

I’ve tried to call a few times just to put a little pressure on them. The people on the phone literally do not understand the question when I ask what’s the upload speed. They have to put me on hold and ask someone. They’ll sell me gigabit…with the same 20 up as on the 400 plan. Ridiculous.

I really miss Pacific Blue
It was one of the nicest color for a phone, I think. To me, many of the other colors offered are either fun but not something I want carrying around with me all the time, or rather boring ho-hum. Pacific Blue was subdued and nice.

My iPhone 12 Pro, my current phone, is Pacific Blue and I've have for several years thought of switching to an Apple clear case as the Apple blue leather case is wearing out. But I still haven't made the move because the leather case still works fine, just cosmetically a little ugly.

I think the average user/customer of their's doesn't care one bit so they don't (home ISP and Mobile networks). The uploads used to consist of an email with potentially a large file (pic or small movie), but the majority of their data was on the download (Streaming, etc.).

I would hope that with more folks utilizing cloud storage, etc. they'll make changes but I doubt it.

I have 1G/1G fiber at the house- I often see a better up than down (just checked 760/870 (D/U). was super happy to have a fiber option over Comcast get added (for less $$ too)

Its crazy to think that it wasn't long ago that Verizon didn't support voice and data at the same time in the early stages of LTE. Calls were still going over their 2G network in 2014-2015 for iPhones at least. If you wanted to send/receive an iMessage, check email or get directions you had to hang up lol

I look forward to the satellite features T-Mobile and Verizon are working on.
