Heath RobinsonNot to mention that the solid state button rumor suggested that the simple, cheap-to-replace buttons were slated to be supplanted with solid state electronic sensors for the buttons and a pair of haptic feedback components -- a series of much more complex components with a likely higher risk of failure and much higher cost to repair.
It really seemed like a Rube Goldberg way to solve a simple problem that has already been solved.
You probably don’t keep your phones as long as some of us do?Not really pertinent to the subject but...OK. I've never had that experience myself and I've had iPhones since v1.
I’d agree with you about the mini, but we’re a very small subset of people in that camp.Eliminate Flares from night mode photos & videos, stop over exposing photo's, get rid of the charging cables, make the camera bump smaller & the phone lighter, make a Mini the size of 11 pro and with pro materials, put the telescope lens in both pro's, ie don't differentiate them to force more people to buy the Max Brick, bring back the iconic notch.....just a few I would like to see, over the solid state buttons😊
Usually 2 to 3 years. I'm lucky enough to be able to afford new toys every so often. But I get wanting to (or having to) keep it longer. Usually Apple will support phones and iPads for at least 4 or 5 years. And they'll do security updates as long as they can.You probably don’t keep your phones as long as some of us do?
It might help substantially with waterproofing9+ years is pretty good assuming anyone touches any current button 200 presses a day. The button is easily outlasting the rest of the phone. Solid state would have to be magic or much cheaper to be worth it.
screams sony phone
As rumors go further out, they are:This. Somebody needs to tell me, with the 15 not out yet, why are these iPhone 16 "leaks" relevant and/or necessary. Be kind...I'm feeling kind of vulnerable...
2028 for Apple: they continue to buy up any small upstart companies that threaten any part of their oligopoly, and bury the tech. As usual. Apple continues to have astonishing profitability, with the most boring products ever. As usual. People continue to buy them, because there continues to be zero realistic choice. As usual. As rumors go further out, they are:
- exponentially less relevant / accurate
- exponentially more fun / clicks

I initially hated the AWU design but it has really grown on me and now I love it. I would totally buy an iPhone that looked like this design.
Ooooooooooooh!
There is now a "low" chance that the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max will be equipped with solid-state volume and mute buttons, according to Jeff Pu, a tech analyst at Hong Kong-based investment firm Haitong International Securities. Pu shared this prediction in a research note today alongside some details about the more imminent iPhone 15 lineup.

Solid-state buttons were initially rumored for iPhone 15 Pro models, but Apple reportedly faced "unresolved technical issues before mass production" and had to revert to mechanical buttons. Pu previously said the solid-state buttons would be postponed until iPhone 16 Pro models, but he now believes even those devices are unlikely to have them.
Apple supplier Cirrus Logic hinted at the solid-state buttons in a shareholder letter last year, but seemingly confirmed the plans were scrapped in May.
With a solid-state design, the buttons on the iPhone 15 Pro would not have moved when pressed. Instead, it was rumored that two additional Taptic Engines inside the iPhone would have provided haptic feedback to simulate the feeling of movement, similar to the Home button introduced with the iPhone 7 and the Force Touch trackpad on newer MacBooks.
iPhone 15 Pro models are still expected to feature a mechanical Action button in place of the Ring/Silent switch. It is likely that users will be able to assign the button to various system functions, such as Ring/Silent or Do Not Disturb.
With solid-state buttons now considered unlikely through 2024, it remains to be seen if Apple will ever move away from mechanical buttons on the iPhone. A benefit of solid-state buttons would be fewer moving parts that can break, and there is also potential for improved water resistance given there would be fewer points of ingress.
iPhone 16 Pro models are still over a year away from launching, so Apple's plans for the devices remain subject to change.

I liked it better when the lock button was on top like it was many years ago in the 5S and before. Never had issues with accidental screen shots then, or locking the phone when just trying to adjust volume.Just remove the volume buttons, with all the accidental screenshots I take, I’d prefer it. My phone has been on silent since middle school. Just let me swipe from the left edge over to bring it up and let me swipe for the volume.
Maybe a nice rumor about under-display Face ID will console you. This news hit hard personally. I’ve been looking forward to solid state buttons for so long. I had hoped to see my dream come to fruition this year but alas it wasn’t meant to be. I consoled myself thinking it will surely happen next year and then I read this article. I sincerely hope the powers that be can bring solid state buttons to the iPhone as soon as possible.
