Good. "Solid state" AKA capacitive touch sucks. I want to strangle the Volvo engineer who put them everywhere in my XC60.... VW learned this the hard way too. Sometimes old school is the best school.

I cannot think of any product that has tried this that the experience made any improvement and didn't increase the use of profanity in the world.

No, capacitive touch buttons wouldn't work out. There's too much incidental contact. Likely they would have pressure sensors that could detect a "keypress".

Arthur C Clarke once wrote in one of his books that touchpads are fine but for some things you need a button that goes "click". Defibrillator paddle buttons always go click. You want to be sure.

The phone as we know it has reached the end of innovation. Stop with yearly releases please.

Every other year is good, in the off year update the SE/budget model and just bring the flip phone damnit

Car companies may disagree. People are constantly buying new stuff and people don't like to buy "last year's model" even though it's perfectly functional. So they change the shape of the headlights and call it "this year's model".

Since I buy a new phone every 2 or 3 years, the incremental changes (like faster Safari ;)) are enough to keep me happy.

In theory, solid state buttons would last longer than physical switches. OTOH, the type of switches Apple uses are rated for something like 1 million keypresses they wouldn't likely fail. (200 presses a day x 365 x 3 years = 220,000 presses). But there may be assembly issues that make the SS buttons a better choice.
Correct. I think most people overlook the advantages of SS buttons for waterproofing as well. 💦

People want their iPhones to be of the highest quality. Moving over to solid state buttons would be a HUGE drop in quality. I'll be upgrading from my XS to the 15 this year. I'm hoping that by the time I have to upgrade again, Apple will either still have the physical buttons, or the solid state buttons will increase in quality enough to be infinity times better than the home button on the 7.
The solid state home button on the 7 was a huge improvement over the slightly wobbly and unreliable home button on the previous models. A big win for quality.

You can say that the haptic feedback did or didn’t exactly match the feel of the physical button but any difference in feel was minor and not worse.

Just like Prossers infamous square Apple Watch, solid state volume buttons are not and were never going to happen! How on earth would they integrate with a case for example?

It's likely the rumour has come from the change of the physical mute switch to a flat button and it's been extrapolated from there. It's nonsense.
And yet, we did get that squared off Apple Watch, it just wasn’t the base mode but the Ultra model. Most rumors do have a source in truth but they don’t always turn out how we expect and sometimes they never make it to market.

It seems most rumors nowadays are not living up. I hope the increase in display size still happens, otherwise i might hold back until they hide the face id camera in the iphone 17.

Man my iphone 12 pro max is starting to feel old. Yet Apple’s current and near future lineup does not offer any enticing features to upgrade.
