I am so excited to get my hands on these incredible new iPhones. There's a lot to consider including Apple intelligence, how Apple will beef up specs to take full advantage of Apple Intelligence, how Apple Intelligence will play more intelligently with these new iPhones, and how Apple Intelligence coupled with these awesome new iPhones will only widen Apple's lead in the consumer and enterprise technology space.

13 Pro owner here. I wonder how old an iPhone do you need to have to get excited about the 16 / 16 Pro series ?

An 11 or 12 maybe ? Not sure I’m convinced of the need to spend so much money upgrading.

Anything except 15 Pro owners should be upgrading just for AI.

If you are not convinced, have a chat with Siri and assess if it is smart enough :)

The camera on the 13 pro max is pretty bad so much over sharpening and the 3x is an unusable water painting mess the 15 pm was already worth it

Apple is the industry leader when it comes to smartphone photography. Apple Intelligence, coupled with incredible new iPhones, will only widen that lead Apple consumers enjoy.

I don't enjoy their image processing and would at least like the option to disable it.

As for AI, my employer has a company-wide ban on using AI in the workplace, and currently has it domain/ip blocked on our network. They are looking into how to block Apple's implementation, as well, as we do use iPads and iPhones. No Macs.

You sound like chatGPT.

Your employer might want to research why Apple Intelligence is different in that you can do everything on-device, if you choose, without sending anything to the cloud. Blocking privacy-focused Apple Intelligence technologies that only serve to make employees smarter and more productive is dumber than dumb.

I think Apple intelligence is going to be turd in the beginning, so it's not a compelling reason to upgrade when they are scotch taping other AI tech to their half-baked rush job and.... well, Siri.

Will probably upgrade this year only because the battery on my 14 ProMax has gone to hell in a handbasket and doesn't last a day without needing charged with light usage.

So many children are currently enslaved in the Congo to get Apple its illegal minerals... for this? For the same phone over and over again?

I definitely won't be upgrading this year.

Well, they'd be enslaved for a really stellar upgrade too so.... nevermind you're writing on an device of enslavement to make this post. If you really care, why aren't you in the Congo mining for minerals to save the children?

I don't condone that ugly business, (look at Diamond mining), but I get irked when people get on a pedestal while defining hypocrisy.

I moved from everything Apple (iPhone, iPad, watch, laptop, Apple TV, iMac, etc.) over to Android when the Z Fold 3 was released. It wasn't difficult at all to make the switch. I've never looked back. The only Apple product I still own is my iMac.

I switched back to the Apple ecosystem only because it got annoying at work with everyone having iPhones. Android is really the superior OS and platform in pretty much every way, and it plays nice with most everything except when Apple goes to extremes to make their stuff be that jerk kid.

I was able to use a Mac for work the past 5 years, so that was really the sweet spot. If you use a Mac, the shortcomings of IOS are more than made up for. If you don't use a mac, it's a different tale.

I have an 11, and I'm pretty excited!

Looks like another incemental update, still no real reason to update from anything newer than a 12 pro.
Normally I’d agree with you but I need to upgrade from a 13 Mini. Battery life is bad and I’m having trouble with the dinky keyboard. Looking forward to having good battery life again, will keep the Mini as a spare.

Siri is smart enough to call someone with CarPlay or set a timer, which is the only thing I've ever found virtual assistants to be good for, regardless of their ability.

I'll be hanging on to my 13 Pro.

Oh boy, AI, that's reassuring </not_reassuring>

I think since iPhone 11, the design almost look same. Previously, every new iPhone during Steve Jobs era, there will be notable hardware upgrade or design change distinguishes itself from previous iteration forced many to adopt the newer edition. I have iPhone 15 Pro Max, I am planning to use it as long as it lasts or minimum 5 years.

Apple is pissed at the EU, so no AI for us, EUropeans.
I'm not so sure we'll be missing out.

Like, am I supposed to pretend most of it isn't already available elsewhere and not as fugly as all the other garbage I can generate?

I don't need Apple to give me nasty AI art and all kinds of generated garbage content. The Internet is practically drowning in it.

No.

Plus buying something for features it won't have until months or years down the line is usually not a good idea.

Apple Intelligence as it appears right now can wait.

I’m reading a collection of Steve Jobs interviews and speeches. One thing he hits over and over and over again is that he wanted to “make things smaller.” That was in his top five goals for EVERY product. He was obsessed with making everything that can be smaller even smaller. The idea that the whole “small and thin” drive originated with Jony Ive is wrong. It all comes from Steve.

So I also question Apple’s trend towards larger phones. It seems contrary to their core DNA.

Some of that was from a time when electronics were really big. A lot of the miniaturization we take for granted as standard today came from that.

I'm not saying there isn't a limit, there is and they went too far.

For better or worse, there's no one at Apple anymore who can say "this is the perfect size" and that's the end of it, right or wrong. Tim Cook just seems to do whatever the analysts tell him is the trend this year.

I want to take the most optimistic view possible and say that presentation was for people who have never used any of this, but I think anyone who cares has some experience with it by now.

To me, that presentation smelled more of desperation than anything Apple has done in a long time. They really wanted to show people that they aren't "behind" on AI, which was kind of un-Apple-like.

It would have been more Apple-like of them to choose not to pursue something like that, and boldly declare that their version will be different and useful. They really might be able to do that, but it will take a while. The fact that they thought showing their own me-too version of generative AI was a good idea is not encouraging.

Problem is they really are behind in "AI" in every sense, despite having spent the last few years crowing about all their "ML." Siri is one of the greatest embarrassments in tech history, and they have just pretended it didn't happen until basically a month ago.

Apple typically releases its new iPhone series around mid-September, which means we are about two months out from the launch of the iPhone 16. Like the iPhone 15 series, this year's lineup is expected to stick with four models – iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro, and iPhone 16 Pro Max – although there are plenty of design differences and new features to take into account.

iPhone-16-Pro-Sizes-Feature.jpg

To bring you up to speed, we've summarized below the biggest iPhone 16 rumors we've covered so far here on MacRumors. For more details, follow the links, or dive into our dedicated roundups for both iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro models.

1. Larger Displays
Biggest Ever iPhones
This year's iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max are rumored to be getting bigger display sizes, increasing to 6.27- and 6.86-inches, respectively. For comparison, the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max are equipped with 6.1-inch and 6.7-inch displays, respectively. The new display sizes would be the largest ever for the iPhone.

2. Vertical Camera Layout
iPhone 16 & iPhone 16 Plus
Apple's iPhone 16 base models will feature a vertical camera arrangement with a pill-shaped raised surface, instead of a diagonal camera arrangement like the iPhone 15. The new camera bump features two separate camera rings for the Wide and Ultra Wide cameras. The vertical camera layout is expected to enable Spatial Video recording, which is currently limited to the iPhone 15 Pro models.

3. Battery Changes
All iPhone 16 Models
One rumor suggests the ‌iPhone 16‌ and iPhone 16 Pro Max will feature larger batteries than their predecessors, but the ‌iPhone 16‌ Plus may have reduced capacity. The iPhone 16 is said to have a 6% increase over the iPhone 15, with the iPhone 16 Pro Max gaining a 5% increase. In contrast, the iPhone 16 Plus is rumored to have a 9% reduction in capacity. On the other hand, Apple could also potentially use stacked battery technology to increase energy density and prolong lifespan across the lineup.

4. Capture Button
New Camera Capabilities
All iPhone 16 models will have a new "Capture Button" dedicated to triggering image or video capture. The button will add features like the ability to zoom in and out by swiping left and right on the button, focus on a subject with a light press, and activate a recording with a more forceful press. The Capture Button will be located on the bottom right side of the ‌iPhone 16, and will take the place of the mmWave antenna on U.S. ‌iPhone‌ models, with the antenna relocating to the left side of the device below the volume and Action buttons.

5. Ultra Wide Lens Upgrade
iPhone 16 Pro & iPhone 16 Pro Max
The iPhone 16 Pro models are expected to feature an upgraded 48-megapixel Ultra Wide camera lens, which should allow it to capture more light, resulting in improved photos when shooting in 0.5× mode, especially in low-light environments. This also means that iPhone 16 Pro models should be able to shoot 48-megapixel ProRAW photos in Ultra Wide mode. These photos retain more detail in the image file for more editing flexibility, and can be printed at large sizes. The iPhone 16 Pro Max is also rumored to boast a bigger main camera thanks to an advanced custom 48-megapixel Sony IMX903 sensor.

6. Super Telephoto Camera
iPhone 16 Pro Max
The iPhone 16 Pro Max could be the first to feature a super telephoto periscope camera for dramatically increased optical zoom. "Super" or "ultra" telephoto usually describes cameras with a focal length of over 300mm. The current telephoto lens is equivalent to a 77mm lens, so if accurate, there could be a notable increase in zoom capabilities. Super telephoto cameras are often used for sports and wild animal photography, but the extremely soft backgrounds they create also make them useful for portrait photography, providing there is enough distance between the subject and the photographer.

7. Faster Wi-Fi Support
Wi-Fi 6E & Wi-Fi 7
Apple's 2024 iPhone Pro models are expected to get Wi-Fi 7 in the Pro models, enabling data transfer over the 2.4GHz, 5GHz, and 6GHz bands simultaneously. This should result in faster Wi-Fi speeds, lower latency, and more reliable connectivity. With technologies such as 4K QAM, Wi-Fi 7 is also expected to offer peak data transfer speeds of over 40 Gbps, a 4× increase... Click here to read rest of article

How about an updated SE w/ home button w/ more storage and an updated camera?

Asking for Home-button/TouchID enthusiasts.

Me. I'm asking for me.

Same old updates with spec bumps. 🙄 It’s so stale every single year. They could release every 2 years instead and still would be crap.

Outfitting all of my employees with 16 Pros immediately after release. I’m sure the new hardware will be fantastic!
