I also worry the 16Pro will be gimped memory wise. Like 8Gb. The same as the 15Pro. We all know AI running locally guzzles memory so why no bump ? You can bet your last $ the 17 Pro will come with 12Gb.

I switched to Android a decade ago, but I'm looking forward to the iPhone 16 Pro models because I might be compelled to switch back this year, thanks to my first grandchild joining the family in December. My daughter and son-in-law are lifelong iPhone users, and I'm not convinced that Apple's jumping on the RCS train is going to be meaningful enough to keep photos and especially videos sent from an iPhone from looking like crap on Android handsets. I guess I'll find out this fall when iOS 18 is released and they send me a test video or two.
You could also consider simply signing up for a cross-platform messaging service (WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, Signal, etc.) and asking your daughter/SIL to do the same. You'd get the same media quality that way, with the added bonus that most of those services have desktop or web-based offerings so you could receive them on your computer to easily save and print.

As others have noted though I would at least wait until iOS 18 debuts to see if RCS fixes your issues before going down that route as there's obviously an inconvenience factor.

Your post seems to be giving guidance to the consumer on which version to buy - including taking one’s own use case into consideration
how?

I just answered that no big company lets you build a spec on a device you to the level described...

you can add memory to laptops. you dont get to choose the brand or specs. often other hardware in the system limits what is compatible.

please show me where i "gave guidance"...

“When deciding which to go with, let your use case and requirements be your guide. And don’t forget that there are also plenty of triple-level cell (TLC) SSDs and single-level cell (SLC) SSDs on the market, too.”

I'm still waiting to see if that is going to be it. If it was, I might just go for the Fold 6. It's more expensive, sure, but it also offers much more. And by the end of the year, I assume it'll be much cheaper.

I plan to keep my phones 4-5 years. I have doubts that any current foldable will hold up that long.

Apple is pissed at the EU, so no AI for us, EUropeans.

Wouldn’t anyone be if EU would imply that any functionality not opened as API to competitors might result to multi billion dollar fines. And the only way to know the rules is after the fact. No wonder Apple is hesitant to add new functionality there (like AI).

Siri is smart enough to call someone with CarPlay or set a timer, which is the only thing I've ever found virtual assistants to be good for, regardless of their ability.

I'll be hanging on to my 13 Pro.
On you next drive, have a chat with GPT4o. Ask it to teach a lesson on any topic you might be interested in. having a private tutor on a drive is quite mind boggling.

Seriously - try it.

But unlike android iOS is optimised so it doesn't need the extra ram!!!!

I have an iPhone 7 plus still holding strong, but the only issue is the battery now. I will try to upgrade the battery in Autumn.

that was the quote from a pro review site... hence the quotes around it... ;)

I have a couple problems with that. First, based on the ChatGPT responses I've seen in my field (Pharamcy), I wouldn't trust it.

Second, ChatGPT is run by Sam Altman, so it's a no-go.

13 Pro owner here. I wonder how old an iPhone do you need to have to get excited about the 16 / 16 Pro series ?

An 11 or 12 maybe ? Not sure I’m convinced of the need to spend so much money upgrading.
I have an iPhone 11 Pro Max, and I am excited to upgrade. To be honest what I am looking most forward to is getting a new battery with 100% charge that will last all day and usbc so I can finally simplify my cables. Everything else is just icing on the cake, my 11 pro max still does everything I need perfectly except the battery runs out by 6pm.

"Ultra-Thin Bezel Technology" -stop calling this a feature! There shouldn't be ANY bezels! We have a robot on mars!
Except that robot is hand made and there’s one, and it costs like millions. iPhones are produced in huge volumes, the tech need to be solid, scalable and the price can’t get too high. Of course they could make iPhone with zero bezels but it might cost too much to mass produce and/or have quality issues if the tech isn’t mature enough. Btw who even cares about bezels these days? Bezels are already super thin. This obsession with thin bezels will only drive cost and price higher.

Expecting no major changes for the Pro/Pro Max model other than a minor increase in screen size and the Pro model matching the zoom capability of the Pro Max

Yes that zoom lens and sensor is real bad on the 13 pm
Huh? much better than digital zoom.
What's so bad about it? example images?

Every review has positive things to say about iPhone images. Even compared to other high end Android devices.

What are you comparing them to? Larger cameras with bigger sensors?

Phone imaging is hugely improved over early models.
I rarely feel the need to get my dedicated digital camera out anymore.
One exception is longer zoom lens but panorama is so much faster and better than my Sony camera.
Low light could improve more on iPhones but still arent bad for static images.
Bigger sensor on DJI Pocket 3 gives awesome low light video.

Bottom line: best image capture is the camera you have with you. And that's usually a phone these days.

And still no Touch ID, despite Touch ID being an integral part of other new Apple products. Tim Cook is truly clueless and not a products person.

1) Have you tried GPT-4o model specifically? All models hallucinate, but when sticking to basics — it is pretty good.

2) If you dislike OpenAI, try some competing top-of-the-line multimodal model. Claude 3.5 Sonnet and Gemini Ultra are probably the best bets as soon as they become available for voice chat.

Original point remains — there is enormous potential in Siri as demonstrated by state-of-the-art models. Siri just needs a brain transplant. And "Apple Intelligence" is getting us one huge step closer to that.

I'll have Apple Intelligence on my m1 Air, so I can play with it there.

I'm a pretty minimalist phone user, so not concerned there.
