Will be nice to have a capacitive capture button. Also it will be great if it is available on non Pro models too.

Employee - So Tim, what shall we do for the next iPhone?

Next year when rumors aren't real. "So happy I skipped the 16 Pro! Absolutely getting the 17 Pro. 16 was too similar to my 14 Pro."

If you want revolutionary upgrades, come back after 5 years.

I have an iPhone XS. Even then it’s not that compelling besides a new battery.

iPhones are now so safe a familiar I’m genuinely tempted by Android ‘for a change’. Historically I’ve not been that Apple loyal (iPhone 3G, iPhone 4S, Nexus 5, Moto G, iPhone 6, iPhone 8 Plus, Galaxy Note 8, iPhone XS), but my dalliances with Android are more short lived.

A dedicated shutter button for the camera? I’m not sure if it’s necessary, but maybe it is. It would make sense to add something like that to the entire 16 lineup to keep the camera experience consistent.
It's allegedly called the capture button which means it's directly related to Photography or has a specific use in Pokémon Go.

Capture button - dedicated camera button?

Maybe a couple of actions for selfie photo or video that happen immediately would be nice.

The real change is in the form factor.

While they are at it - a fourth camera module. So like Samsung, the array will change so everyone knows you are rock’in the new phone. A real telephoto and back to 3X for portrait.

If they added the fourth camera and a dedicated quick action button to work it all that may be what they have in mind. That would be a huge physical change for the iphone so that at least would be new.

I’m in on the iphone 16 Ultra!

Buttons - the ultimate innovation! Next year: Apple bringing back a capacitive home button for iPhone 17 Pro.... Probably the iPhone 20 will look like an original iPhone, now we've come full circle.
The iPhone 20 will have zips and Velcro in addition to buttons. It’s clearly the direction of travel.

OMG, I can exclusively reveal that the iPhone17 Pro Max (*Carbon Neutral Special Edition) titanium alloy will be full of buttons!

Terrible place for a button. That's exactly where most people hold their phone. I get it though, if you orient your phone like a camera so that the lens is to the left and upper corner, that puts the capture button right where it would be on a camera. But used as a phone, that's at best an annoying bump, and at worst accidentally triggered.

And seriously macrumors, we don't know what it's purpose is? It's position and name tell you exactly what it's for, capturing photos. You might be able to use it as a second action button too, but given the location, it would make most sense if it is deactivated in portrait mode, or when the camera isn't active. Hopefully it'll be a very smooth and subtle bump.

Seems like the volume button is still better location, in the other orientation my fingers are unusually in the way of the lenses. What would be cool is add capcitive button to the volume up button, so I slight hold on the button would do a focus lock and then press the button for shutter, like a DLSR camera does.
I would like to have the same buttons on every side. I’m left handed, and no iPhone is diesigned for left handed persons, although a great part of the humans are left handed. By having the same buttons on every side, you can choose als left of right handed. It you can also redefine the other keys. That’s evolution, no revolution. Simple and good.

This reminded me of the Smart Battery Cases for the iPhone 11 series that come with a shutter button also on the bottom right side of the phone. I tend to rotate my phone counterclockwise to take pictures horizontally, and that position for the shutter button is the most ergonomic for me. It’s good that now the new action button on the iPhone 15 Pros can also behave as a shutter button, so as the already-have-been volume buttons, but still, I don’t think I will easily change the habit of rotating my phone. Maybe it’s because I don’t want my fingers at the left bottom accidentally blocking the camera. But more importantly, it’s a habit thing. I find it’s more comfortable in my usual way - my fingers at the bottom is more relaxed by grabbing the phone that secure the phone when holding, and I don’t need to keep watching out my bottom fingers that may accidentally blocking the lenses. By rotating counterclockwise, I found that I still tend to use my right thumb for the virtual shutter button way more than my left thumb for the volume buttons (I’m a right-handed person).

Off-topic, the Smart Battery Case was introduced for the iPhone 6s, discontinued for the 8 & X, and reintroduced again for the XS. Apple then again stopped making the Smart Battery Cases since the iPhone 12, which makes the iPhone 11 SBCs the only generation that has the shutter button. They sort of replaced it with the MagSafe Smart Battery Pack, and of course, it doesn’t have the shutter button (I don’t think it’s a good idea they add a button on that thing, though). And again, they just killed this one, and now we don’t have a battery solution from Apple official again. I like MagSafe, but sometimes I do miss the Smart Battery Case. Since the weight loss for the 15 Pros, having that kind of case would definitely be better than using it with the previous iPhone Pro models.

Edited: specified UX narrative.

I find that the opposite. I always like rotate my phone counterclockwise when taking photos horizontally, and I find that it’s more comfortable and I barely have my fingers blocking the camera on the top. Maybe it’s a habit things. For the other way, I may accidentally block the camera and I have to watch out my fingers at the bottom. Also, the camera will located more upper if I do it counterclockwise, which is kinda my preferred position for capturing photos.

I do like your idea to have a DSLR-like button. If they make a non-physical capacitive button on the bottom right as the article suggests, that may be easy to implement - I imagine that by touching the button it will do the focus thing, and force press the button will take a photo.
