Very interesting. Thinking about how this could all work, I’m fairly confident this button will be used to capture DEEZ

My genreal enjoyment of using the handset. It feels much better in the hand than the squared off phones, the curved glass, the weight, the balance - all so much better. That really really improves the enjoyment of using something every day. It's noticeably fast too. I don't know if it was iOS16 the iPhone 14 Pro or the combination of the two, but it was the slowest iPhone I remember using - this is so much better, whatever issue there was with spotlight is gone this year. USB-C has also been fairly handy already quite a bit too - and I wasn't vocal about needing that change at all, i was happy with lightning but I have numerous full power USB-C charging cables scattered around I can plug into - and when there's a 30% drain on battery every day due to "no mobile coverage" that's quite useful.

I definitely felt less noticible enjoyment going between each iteration of 11 -> 12 -> 13 -> 14. This one has got to be up there with some of the best iPhones in the top 5 probably.
I love the 24 MP Live Photos!
I agree the lighter weight and general feel is improved.

iPhone 17 won't be a phone, it will be an esim built into the goggle things they're making. That way you never have to take them off as they have see through mode, video mode, headphones with noise cancelling and hear through mode, and microphones built in.

Anyone who feels this is uncool will be met with an eyes roll emoji on the outside of the visor with an accompanying 'talk to the hand' emoji ✋, and the speakers will have a loud hailer mode announcing 'piss off peasant'.

the iPhone 16 will bring back the physical keyboard. You’ll all have many buttons to push. Rumor has it. Only one is capacitive and you won’t know which one will be.

2 whole pages and nobody mentions that the 'capture' button is blatently just the camera button found on Sony phones?
A dedicated shutter button for the camera? I’m not sure if it’s necessary, but maybe it is. It would make sense to add something like that to the entire 16 lineup to keep the camera experience consistent.

Seriously...the lack of innovation with the iPhone year over year is so disappointing. Look we're giving you "buttons" as our special feature! For the first time EVER, I'm thinking an Android phone might be my next smartphone purchase. Waiting for iPhone 16 Pro but there needs to be something to get excited about...

I can see the keynote video now. A quick-cut montage comprised of tight shots of fingers pressing different “dumb” buttons - think elevator, doorbell, the flip-up glass revealing the red button beneath, etc. Some VO about “humans have never pressed a button this advanced, this capable, this magical. Introducing MagicToch.”
Cut back to Tim. “We think you’re gonna love it.”

The iPhone 16 series is expected to gain an additional capacitive button, known internally as the "Capture Button." Codenamed "Project Nova," the button is likely to be one of the main selling points of the iPhone 16 lineup, assuming it gets past the initial testing phase. The Capture Button is located on the same side as the Power button, only positioned slightly lower - where the mmWave cutout can be found on more recent iPhone models. The mmWave cutout has been moved to the opposite side, located under the volume buttons. It is currently unknown what the new capacitive button will be used for.

The Capture Button is expected to be a capacitive button rather than a standard mechanical one. Capacitive buttons, unlike mechanical buttons, do not move when pressed down. Instead, the button detects pressure and touch, providing haptic feedback through the use of haptic engines. The buttons are expected to work similarly to the Home Button on the iPhone SE, which mimics the press of a physical button through the built-in Taptic Engine. According to our sources, the capacitive buttons will feature force sensor functionality. Force sensors detect applied force, and convert the magnitude of force into electrical signals.

Early in the development of the iPhone 15 Pro, Apple experimented with capacitive buttons on the iPhone in the form of the since-canceled Bongo project. The Bongo module, unlike the Capture Button, consisted of capacitive Power and Volume buttons, and didn’t bring any additional buttons into the mix. Based on what we’ve heard from our sources, the Bongo module was canceled during the EVT stage of development, after unsatisfactory test results and a significant number of hardware issues. The cancelation left Apple engineers with ample room to reimagine the capacitive buttons for the iPhone 16 series, with an entirely new twist this time around.

Unlike the Bongo project, the Capture Button is set to make its debut across the entire iPhone 16 lineup, including the base model iPhone 16 and 16 Plus. It is worth noting, though, that Apple also created a hardware configuration without the Capture Button button, possibly as a fallback variant in the event of continued hardware failure rates. The Capture Button has appeared on both eSIM-only units and devices with support for physical SIM card slots.

Along with the new Capture Button, the iPhone 16 lineup is expected to gain a capacitive Action Button. Known as "Project Atlas," the haptic Action Button uses a design similar to the Capture Button, using strain gauges and reluctance motor to provide the necessary haptic feedback.

In addition to the Capture Button and upgraded Action Button, the base model iPhone 16 is expected to feature a redesigned camera bump, with vertical camera arrangement akin to the iPhone 12. The Pro models are also set to feature an increase in screen size, from 6.1" and 6.7" to 6.3" and 6.9", respectively.

It is important to consider that the information presented here is pre-production information. The iPhone 16 lineup is still in the early stages of development, and the design has not been finalized. Because of this, there is always a chance that we may not see the Capture Button on the final product.

They got tired of adding cameras and now they have to add buttons, in a few more years they are going to fill the frame with holes to add speakers "ultra-spatial deep tetra hybrid sound"

I am wanting to get a iphone 16 pro max to replace my aging 12 pro max. But the thought of having a 4 buttoned phone, will look horrid.

They seem to removing everything headphone jack, silence switch, and adding buttons instead. Apple should rename the iPhone to iClick.

I also hope that this not count for a design change like the dynamic flip & action flop.

iPhone 17 will replace all physical buttons with capacitive sensing + haptic feedback. What do you get is a seamless side phone with no apparent buttons but markings to indicate power, volumes and whatever Apple fancy to add as buttons. Side not: I propose this idea first, so copyright belongs to me.

Capture button? As in snap a photo? The placement is better than the current action button to use as a camera shutter button,

We just need something new. I'm keeping my 12 Pro for now because not even the 15 Pro feels new.
My 12 Pro felt new coming from the 8. We just need something different.
I am coming from 12 Pro to 15 Pro Max, but my faceID module is busted AND my screen has a corner crack otherwise I’m not sure that I would be. I guess I’m rough on my phones because the X’s FaceID only lasted 3 generations as well… 🤷🏼‍♂️

Thats fantastic. Actually, unironically, fantastic. Macro buttons are extremely useful, and as redundant as the Action Button might seem to a lot of Android users who have volume buttons that double as camera buttons with a double click, but you do reach a limit of what you can achieve through patterns on a single button. Having several as you would on a desktop machine is a massive improvement to me.
However, iPhones have had that same thing for quite awhile, but you just click it once. I remember when physical buttons were what would "fill the landfill" according to Steve. So now MOAR physical buttons are innovative?

Buttons - the ultimate innovation! Next year: Apple bringing back a capacitive home button for iPhone 17 Pro.... Probably the iPhone 20 will look like an original iPhone, now we've come full circle.
And since buttons are now so innovative, they'll add back a physical keyboard just like the Nokias that the original iPhone set out to replace!!!

And for all those naysayers who say that having physical buttons would make it faster and easier to use iPhone with muscle memory, well they can go back to using Nokia phones since they like physical buttons so much - the underlying idea since the very first iPhone is to eliminate physical buttons and make everything appear on the touchscreen.

Bring back Jony Ive and his vision for a singular sheet of glass with no ports, no buttons, and cutouts. Timmy is going back in full circles.

Wake up, new meme just dropped. Now you can photoshop the entire phone back to be cameras and the entire side rail to be action buttons. Screen having 2 dynamic islands optional.

All the people not upgrading the year and trashing the 15. Hint: the 16 will also be a minor spec bump. A button is not revolutionary.
