Isn't it also going to be lacking mmWave 5G and have overall lower speeds?

It's possible the specific 🍎 modem in these never goes in normal and/or Pro iPhones
You could be right about this particular model, but I'm sure their end goal will be to rely solely on their own modems at some point. Have to start somewhere and this is a great opportunity to test their current progress. But yeah, I don't really expect Apple modems in the iPhone 17. That would be too soon. It would be at least next year after they've had a full year of public use.

It will be interesting to see what they do with the iPhone 15 pricing. Who in their right mind would pay $200 more for a phone with a 2 year old SoC, less RAM and no access to Apple Intelligence? The dynamic island has been a flop (just like 3D touch) with developers tending to use live notifications instead and the wide angle camera is not worth $200 over an 16E.
I can only assume the 14 and 15 will be extinct by Wednesday night.

It's real simple

They want to be able to have a "normal customer" come into a store (Apple or Carrier) and get "the latest iPhone 16 from Apple"

And then the flow is:

Show them the options and they choose between the "E, Regular, Pro, Pro Max"

"All iPhone 16" ... just pick your differences

No compromises***
;)

Just preferences and price points

It's as simple as that

"SE" branding was very likely a turn off to folks who suck up the advertising and want "the latest iPhone"
(to continue the mindless scrolling, per normal)
Well said. Pretty sure the 14 and 15 will no longer be offered by Wednesday night.

I really hope this phone isn't the major part of the announcement. I don't know why there'd be a cryptic message with "newest member of the family" for a low-end phone of a line up. It wouldn't even be "new" it'd be a member of the family getting a makeover. Lump it in with another keynote or product. I do welcome the product in general, but it could just be done with a simple press release.

I'm hoping the real major announcement is a Smart Home device that has also been in the rumors for quite a bit.

I hope this was another joke and you didn’t just correct me but not “effordable.” lol

Besides, it’s a Lil Wayne reference.
My apologies. I should have realised you were joking. I’m not familiar with Lil Wayne.

Probably a marketing move so that folks can say "oh yeah, I have a 16" (or w/e the current number happens to be)

Makes people feel "current" and "keeping up with the Joneses"

(I'm being serious ... consumers are often that vain and fickle)
True.

It seems that it's just as much about not feeling the push to buy once the initial launch hype has died down as it is about owning the latest and greatest.

I can see iPhone 16E helping Apple generate a decent amount of hype without having it feel quite as low-end and outdated as previous budget iPhones.

Yes, aware there’s a bug turning it back on. I’m sure it’ll get fixed. If it’s intentional then Apple should do better. But again, you can just turn it off, or do what my wife does, leave it on and just ignore it until she wants to make a genmoji.
Ignore it and let it take up space? No thanks.

I don’t understand the AI-phobia a lot of people on MacRumors seem to have. I don’t wear an Apple Watch, but I just ignore the Watch app, not complain over and over again that it’s there.
It's not AI-phobia. I just find the current implementation of Apple Intelligence severely lacking.

I don't wear an Apple Watch, so I deleted the Watch app.

I don't care to use Apple Intelligence so I'll turn it off.... until Apple takes away that ability.

Huh, I bet they pull an iPad 10 here and release the “16E” a tier above the SE3, which remains on sale for another year in the lowest position. In a years’ time, the SE3 goes away and the 16E drops $100 to the same price as the SE3.

Also, the 14 and 15 disappear because they don’t support Apple Intelligence.

Well, if so, they should update SE3 with USB-C, because it's no longer available in EU.

That's an interesting prediction -- would be a very "Cooking with Tim" move

Dynamic island is useful sometimes.
I do miss 3D touch though, i didn't notice how useful it was till they removed it.

As the iPhone SE will be sold for many years it would make sense to just name it the SE. The SE 4 in this case. Any additional number (e.g. 16) will make it sound more dated every September.
even the budget phone is closing in at 500 usd with minimum to no features while production cost of iphone 16 pro max is 485 USD, profit should be made but this is getting ridiculous

No, it's 100% because the expectation around the SE is that it starts under $450.

iPhone 16E means they think they can charge $520 without anyone catching on.

"Wait, this is an iPhone 16? For $500?! That's half price!"

(Also makes it sound older when Apple wants you to buy the refreshed version in two or three years. SE is too timeless.)

Fair enough - I don't think there's a way to "know", but I like your idea as much as mine

Ha, sorry -- the snark was completely for Apple.

I'm sure it's a little of Option A and a little of Option B. They will sell slightly more (so significantly!) by making it feel like they're on the latest phone.

Will be interesting to see if the refresh rate for the "cheap phone" will speed up hoping we buy more. I've been solidly on the SE upgrade train -- minus a few months' dalliance with an Xr which I quickly ditched -- and they probably would rather I buy phones more often.
