I was thinking the 17e will then the same price as the 16e now and the 16e will then be 100 usd cheaper. (Essentially the new SE)
assuming there will be a 17E, the SE range was updated every 2-3 years and not yearly.
But who knows this time; else it was a daft idea to call it 16E

True that. I guess if it sells well, then they will keep on using that naming, otherwise it will be another iphone 5C

Battery life more important than the everything else the 16 offers. 16 camera lenses are its only meaningful advantage. But it isn’t enough. So 16e is cheaper and a better phone than the 16.

Very important?
Probably 100 people in the world use it. Normal people use AirPlay.
I use the feature almost every day. Airplay only works with certain newer TVs. Ive been to over 300 hotels and airbnbs in the last 5 years and i can tell you that the majority of them dont have Airplay. Even if it is a smart tv, i prefer using my own log ins from my ipad, and the only way to connect that is with usbc to hdmi. I used to travel with an Apple TV, coz i also prefer airplay, but it’s more work than just connecting the ipad or iphone. A usbc iphone, not having a normal, to be expected usbc feature, should be mentioned somewhere. I think the majority of android phones with USBc can connect to an external display. I get the feeling we are going backwards. iPhones should have a stage manager and full external display support, not going the other way.

All that proves is the feature is important to YOU, that you are one of these 100.

Many people do unusual things. I travel with a BT dongle that's paired to my AirPods, so I can watch plane movies wirelessly. (Plug the dongle into the headphone socket and USB power, and you're good.)
The difference is I don't imagine that I represent anything close to the AVERAGE traveler...

I love it, im also traveling with the bluetooth headphone dongle. Finally i meet someone who does that too! =) but yea, you are right. I’m also not in a merket for the iphone 16e. Just sad seeing phones devolve, thats all. Im still on my iPhone 8, waiting for an 8K recording iphone to upgrade and actually get new features. I need 8K to zoom into my videos in post. Also a feature that i understand, most people dont need but i hope that the 17 pro max will provide. The other thing i would like to see is finally the ability to use two apps side by side. Like the notes app and the camera, at the same time. Some kind of Stage Manager light for iphone, including improved external display support. Also not a mainstream request, but I got time, if not 17 then maybe 18 pro, or I finally switch to a Pixel phone, install grapheneOS and leave all those big corporations behind. Maybe the best option of it all.

Now that the 17 series are in the picture, one either chooses the 16e if they’re strict on the budget, or the 17. iPhone 16 is yesteryear’s story

You forgot to mention USB-C speeds. iPhone 16e support only USB2 speeds (480mb/s)

edit: Jesus, just check and 16 also only supports USB2 speeds. That is pure evil.
"Pure evil" is a massive overreaction for omitting a feature (high-speed wired data transfer) that most people will never use.

My 4-year-old Oppo is on its way out and getting an Iphone did cross my mind as I now have a Mac, the 16e as it is the cheaper Iphone, but the price is still nearly £600 in the U.K, and I am not sure if I can really pay that much for a phone. I can afford it, just not sure if I could justify the cost when a £200 or lower Android based phone will do the same job.

With just $100 more, I would definitely select the 16. The 16e lacks MagSafe and Ultrawide camera. Also would prefer to have dynamic island than a notch.

Lack of MagSafe is a dealbreaker. I've been using only MagSage for a while now, both at my desk, at my bedside, in the car and at work. But it's a great entry level model, but the price is so high that you might as well get an iPhone 15 or 16.
I never used MagSafe cause its a power waste, but the cases including MagSafe magnets are the same price as cases without so the 16e basically can have MagSafe for free. And I waited 3 months till it got 120 Euros cheaper on Amazon so the price is great too.
