When the 17 is announced, the 16 will likely only be $100 more than the 16E. For $100 you get a raft of improvements. Don't see why anyone would choose this.

Unlocking home and car doors as you are approaching them using keys stored in Apple Wallet.

I'm a little confused... so the new iPhone 16e can't do this? I've been using my old iPhone 12 Mini to unlock/lock doors and start the engine in my BMW for a couple of years. Can imagine getting a new phone that doesn't allow this.... :(

nah thats a lazy take it’s actually better value than a 15
Can't say for the US, but living in EU I would 100% choose refurbished or discounted 15 (can't care less about AI on my phone). 15 is for sure a better value for the same money.

And why buying 2 years old iphone that is equal or better in almost every way than a new one is bad?

I want to upgrade my old iPhone 12 Mini to the 16e. Is it a worthy upgrade? I use the wide-angle rear camera a lot and it seems like the 16e doesn't have a wide-angle lens? Or am I wrong?

(by the way, my daily driver is actually a 14PM... the iPhone 12 Mini is my spare phone that I carry in my pocket)

thanks!

Perhaps the 16e takes a price cut in sept?

Seems to be a trend as of late, in regards to new form factor hardware releases

Looking at the spec sheets side by side kind of makes the 16e even more indefensible. I just don't understand why any half-informed consumer would buy the thing. Many carriers offer better phones for free if you switch to them so even if that becomes a perk it's not that great. They're really banking on the stupidity of x amount of their potential customer base to push this thing forward.

Not exclusively tied to Apple Wallet. The Tesla app uses UWB to unlock your car as you approach the door, without loading anything into Wallet.

Hol' up... Wait a minute... Somethin' ain't right... Apple isn't charging the stupid $30 extra for unlocked phones?

As somebody who lives the prepaid life, this is a nice plus.

I checked the iPhone 15 and 16 pages just now too, and the +$30 tax is still there. So this looks like another difference we can record for the 16 vs 16e. 😆

The lack of Magsafe is bewildering, it's an Apple standard - lower its charging power for the entry-level model if needed, but no Magsafe at all is a bit of a kick in the groin.

$600 is still more expensive than most midrange Android devices, only in the Apple bubble is this low-end pricing.

Right but the 16E is still better value because it’s cheaper so your actually saving money plus why would you buy an iPhone that can’t run certain software going forward

Than can both be equally "tough" (resistant to shatter when dropped) but the newer one can be superior in other ways (eg more difficult to scratch, or less glossy).
I took it as Ceramic Shield branded technology is superior to any other smart phone glass technology. So the two iPhones can have different strengths, but still both use Ceramic Shield which is stronger than the glass on any other smartphone.

But yeah Apple likes to leave it claims vague and up to interpretation.

Yes it looks that way the now but 6 months from now this iPhone will start to look more appealing long term when certain iPhones get removed

Is the ultra wide band chip used for anything other than airtags?
I forget where I read it, but thought I saw an article about their anticipated new home pod 3 using it in some capacity, probably to enable automations when the phone is detected nearby.

This is Apple's lowest end phone.
If you're the sort of person who has a WiFi 6E base station in your house, you are NOT the sort of person who is buying an iPhone SE/e.
I don’t think that is correct at all. 6E is a half step generation.. 16E is a half step generation. So in that sense they match up really well. But really the main thing is, 6E is a generation of standards, it isn’t a tier of device or premiumness. There are budget low tier 6E devices for less than $100 and there are high end ones for $800. It isn’t even the latest standard, 7 is already on the market. 6E simply means you somewhat recently updated your router. Same thing with 16E.. if you buy one, it means you recently updated your phone. Doesn’t mean you went high end. Just means you happened yo upgrade at that point. Could have been coming from a 2010 base router model and finally made the move to a 2025 base model. And yes there are still WiFi 5 and WiFi 6 routers on the market, just like there are still iPhone 15 and 16 models on the market.

The comparison should be against the old iphone 15 as well. It’s more capable with the same price point.
