Something about this rumor - or this article on it - doesn't add up: on the one side, it's supposed to be thicker than the 16 Pro Max, on the other, the article says "the frame of iPhone 17 Pro Max has not changed, and is "just like iPhone 16 Pro Max."" - how can the frame be the same, but the thickness different?

Perfect!

The 17 Air will likely be my next phone. Assuming there's at least one decent camera with a focal length I like (around 35mm for what I like to shoot).

Great another massive iPhone that leans away from my small phone preference.

Apple can you make a smaller iPhone air as well please?

So the selling point is just how thin it is? Meaning much less battery life and easier to break? I assume there will be other differentiating features, otherwise I have no interest.

Lightness, for those of us who have tired hands.

Battery life could be phenomenal given rumored new “deep battery”, and inclusion of C1 modem, and loss of extra cameras resulting in more space, possibly even removal of even more superfluous features like double speaker for again, more battery space.

I wouldn’t be surprised if this 17 Air meets or beats the 16 Pro Max in battery life, and I have no doubt it will clown on the 16 Pro’s abysmal blife.

I much rather they have it 7mm without the lens sticking out and have a bigger battery.
The lenses are significantly thicker than 7 mm though.
Just for reference, if they made the phones as thick as the cameras are currently, the new phones would be thicker than the iPhone 3G and 3GS, to this point the thickest ever iPhones at 12.3MM.
In fact, the thickness comparison that could be made would only be to the original iPad (13.4MM), meaning those would be some thick, chunky, heavy phones.
Going from somewhere between seven and 8 mm as it is currently up to almost 14? I think everyone here who says they’d love that actually would hate it after five minutes.

I think I might actually look at the new Air, but it depends on how good its camera is as the Pro phones can take some fantastic shots. But I feel like I'm picking a brick up every time I pick my 14 Pro Max up.

Artist renders are meaningless. I think it is too early to judge the looks of the 17 model when we haven't even seen it.
I think 5.5mm can be envisioned however. It’s going to feel ridiculously thin. That’s going to be pretty impressive to feel, this much is certain.

How much that matters though, is up to the buyer.

To me, this feature is almost priceless because it inherently cuts weight down as long as they don’t switch back to stainless steel…

If I get the Air, I will use it without a case. Otherwise, I won't be able enjoy the full effect of the thinness.

Think of how much more you can carry in your pocket if you buy the Air! Such a useful design. Now instead of 3 sticks of gum, you can carry 5! I will never, ever, ever understand how anyone can obsess over the thickness or weight of a phone.

I actually hope this is a flop. The success or failure of this thing will truly indicate if people want a thinner slim phone or prefer features and battery life at the expense of some thickness.

Not everyone wants to keep replacing their phone with a used/refurbished one.
I think people are getting general carrier warranties confused with AppleCare.
I have been using AppleCare for almost a decade now, I have never, not once, ever received a used phone as a replacement.
Refurbished maybe, but even then I doubt it, if I have ever had an iPhone replaced, it has been with a factory new one with a brand new battery and a brand new everything. And even then, they rarely do replacements anymore with the iPhone.

Obsess? Maybe not.
But would I absolutely love my 15 Pro Max to be 30% thinner and 30% lighter? Absolutely.

What if they are experimenting on a thin phone so when they end up with a foldable phone it is no thicker than the "standard" model?

Actually, it won’t fit in your pocket. That’s why Apple should offer two models, including one at 5.8 inches, which has a proven track record unlike 5.4 inches. But Apple won’t according to the current rumors.
