iPhone 17 Air and 17 Pro Max Allegedly Same Size Apart From Thickness

It only took four comments before someone from the Mini Clan dropped the Mini into the conversation. It's almost as if the Mini Clan will not let this go. 🤣
I seriously wonder how Pro Max people carry their phones around. Do you all wear baggy cargo pants or carry a purse? A go everywhere device needs to be small enough to actually go everywhere without imposing a bunch of wardrobe demands.

No I'm not in the Mini Clan. I think I saw one once while riding the subway, but that's as close as I've ever gotten.

Will be interesting to see the new iPhones this year. I will prefer to get the Pro Max due to more lens/camera on it. Expecting good battery life from both.

Weight?

Less than 180g?
its understandable that not so much discussion has so far focused on the potential weight of the iPhone 17 Air.
but a thinner phone with even just a little bit less weight will actually feel like a lot less weight.
i think most people will actually need to pick one up and feel it in the hand to understand this, however.

Care is the best case

Know thyself and ye shall be set free… I paid for my Pro 512 with my own money (big boy) and out of contract. And I KNOW from experience I eventually break every phone I’ve ever had. Which is main reason I got an iPhone again a) wide network of repair hubs everywhere in the world and b) AppleCare+.

I’m careful. I use a case 90% of the time. I drop it perhaps once a month? Eventually I will release the tension within the glass and it will crack. And I will need it fixed asap.

The removal of worry is a wholly undervalued sensation. Sure sure I could buy a new phone no problem…but I also want that Colnago w/ full Ultrega. Life is hard 😎🖖

less than 180g is a nice target. But consider that an original Nokia 3310 weighs 133g. A 5110 weighs 170g. And people used to say that these were clunky. 180 is absolute max. Make it out of plastic and paper, or whatever but keep the wieight down please, Mr Tim Apple.

I think I’m ready for this. Just booted up my ol’ iPhone 6 to get some pictures off I’d forgotten about and…I WAS AMAZED AND BLOWN AWAY OBER HOW IT FELT IN MY HAND. I’m tired of lugging a do-all phone around. I don’t even like punching in calendar events on it versus on my iPad.

Honest to God I’m SO ready for a “iPhone 6” + iPad Pro M4 13” 1TB + pocket camera life.
I think the article is stating the opposite? That the "Air" is going to be as large as the Max, just thinner.

So still no "mini" form factor.

I'm wondering whether the 17 or the 17 Air will be lighter.

I don’t want a smaller screen. I want a considerably lighter and thinner device that I don’t constantly feel I’m lugging around. I’d take an iPhone 6 SIZED device, but I’m not lusting for one.

The lenses are significantly thicker than 7 mm though.
Just for reference, if they made the phones as thick as the cameras are currently, the new phones would be thicker than the iPhone 3G and 3GS, to this point the thickest ever iPhones at 12.3MM.
In fact, the thickness comparison that could be made would only be to the original iPad (13.4MM), meaning those would be some thick, chunky, heavy phones.
Going from somewhere between seven and 8 mm as it is currently up to almost 14? I think everyone here who says they’d love that actually would hate it after five minutes.

We already have folded phones that when only count single sided fold + camera is roughly about 7mm.

Who wants no battery and terrible cameras on their phone?
Asked no one ever.
The ONLY way this can make sense is if they separate parts that usually break and make it the "base" iphone, with replaceable-parts-as-cases.

Can't wait to get my iPhone 17 Air and slap a big fat case on it.

So you can get battery, Magsafe and other bells and whistles optional. Good.

Terrible camera sounds great to me if it means more battery life.

Why do you keep assuming no battery?

I’m pretty sure iPhone 17 Air is going to have one of the longest battery lifes of any iPhone ever beating out those including the 16 Pro Max.

I don’t even care if them cutting it to 60hz is given as a battery compromise. I don’t even really care if it’s OLED at this point.

Terrible small speakers? Great. Anything to max battery life at this point. It’s getting ridiculous.

Huge shelf at the top to possibly house even more battery? Fine. 5.5mm thinness is worth it for a shelf at the top.

Me and many others like me just want a battery life that rivals a double shift (read: 17 hours) of extreme usage across the GPS, heat, power, and screentime metrics to name a few.

Why? For the convenience. For the peace of mind. Yes chargers are that annoying.

Yes, but why? It'll be more susceptible to damage and it's still bordering on a phablet.

AppleCare has always served me well in the rare instance I have to use it, and I’ve actually started to be sold on the size of these big boys over time. Insane.

Apple's all-new ultra-thin iPhone 17 Air shares the same dimensions as the iPhone 17 Pro Max, with the only difference being in the thickness of the devices, according to the leaker Ice Universe.

Posting to their Weibo account, the Chinese leaker today claimed that the iPhone 17 Air and iPhone 17 Pro Max have identical body length, width, screen size, and bezels. "The only difference is the thickness," added the leaker. "The iPhone 17 Air is 5.5mm thick, while the iPhone 17 Pro Max is 8.725mm thick."

If these dimension are accurate, they also suggest that the iPhone 17 Pro Max will itself be substantially thicker than the existing iPhone 16 Pro Max.

Aside from the alleged 5.5mm thickness for the iPhone 17 Air, which we have heard before, Ice Universe's claims are quite a significant development and contrast with previous rumors. Last year, display industry analyst Ross Young said the iPhone 17 Air would have a 6.55-inch display, or a 6.6-inch display when rounded up.

Notably, this display size was challenged last month by YouTube creator Jon Prosser, who claimed that the iPhone 17 Air will be equipped with a larger 6.7-inch display. (Young has since reiterated his 6.55-inch display size claim for the iPhone 17 Air.)

However, if Prosser is correct and the iPhone 17 Air has a 6.7-inch display, that's still far off the expected 6.9-inch display size of the iPhone 17 Pro Max. Apple increased the display size of the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max last year, and they are expected to remain the same for the iPhone 17 Pro models. Indeed, Ice Universe today said that the frame of iPhone 17 Pro Max has not changed, and is "just like iPhone 16 Pro Max."

Ice Universe has previously revealed accurate dimensions of iPhones before they are released, including the sizes of the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max. Still, we are taking this particular rumor with a grain of salt for now until other sources can corroborate the claims. Apple is expected to launch the iPhone 17 lineup around its usual mid-September time frame.

I think it's good that the iPhone 17 Air is the same size as the Pro Max because it needs a bigger battery. Smaller, thinner phones drain battery more quickly.

I'm like an elephant, I never forget! :)

I really cannot stress how uninterested I am if this is true. I upgrade my iPhone every year. I really don’t need a slimmer phone. There has to be consequences. Give us a real fast charging and a folding iPhone. Grow up. Apple.
