This is going to sound sarcastic, but it's not meant to be. Thank you for that insight and push. I am genuinely attracted to the Air. I am a current 16PM user, but want something smaller and lighter to wield in one hand. I take a lot of photos, but I don't think I am coming close on average to using the full extent of the current 3 lens setup, so I've overcome that obstacle. The lack of mmWave was also holding me up, but to your point, does it really, truly matter in my everyday use? The answer is very likely no.

Guess that just leaves the battery life question, which really is so much less of an issue than a lot of us thought if the numbers on the Apple website are to be believed.
the difference between the air and the base 17 is less than the difference between the base and the pro

the max is a brick. just getting the pro makes a difference. getting the base makes a dramatic difference. getting the air will be a tiny bit more. doesn't seem worth it to me, for the trade offs. the bigger screen almost makes it worse

No it's not. It's actually the most exciting and appealing iPhone in YEARS. Even with the compromises.
I'm excited about the significant spec bump of the 17 this year. It now has most of the Pro features I care about, at a lower price. The design is really not that important to me, as long as the phone is functional and durable. I don't even care so much about the color.

I have NO DESIRE to get the base model 17, and even I am excited about how much of an upgrade it is compared to the past several years.👏🏼

And even more so how it holds its own against, and is arguably more appealing than, the Pro-series this year...

Not sure why people are complaining about the iPhone Air. Once Apple releases a new "MacBook" the MacBook Air will likely fit squarely in the middle like the air currently does with iPad offerings.

It usually ends up being the iPhone for most with the exception of this year with how solid the 17 base model is. This will be corrected in the coming years.

Compared to my 15 Pro, the Air is:

0.38"/9.6 mm taller
0.16"/4.1 mm wider
0.1"/2.6 mm thinner (aside from camera plateau)
0.78 oz./22 g lighter

Pros: 0.4" diagonal larger screen, 256 GB storage, 12 GB RAM.
Cons: No additional camera so limited zoom, and USB 2 instead of 3.

I don't know that I would buy it straight up for $999. With my 15 Pro as a trade-in cutting it down to $579 it makes far more sense. YMMV.

Why does the Air have more ram than the base model? I've always perceived the Air models to be the "economic" ones, not the ideal ones.

Apple does not advertise RAM amounts in iPhones, but MacRumors has confirmed this information in the latest version of Apple's developer tool Xcode 26.

Here is how much RAM is in each new iPhone model:
  • iPhone 17: 8GB
  • iPhone Air: 12GB
  • iPhone 17 Pro: 12GB
  • iPhone 17 Pro Max: 12GB
This confirms the rumored RAM amounts for these devices.

Compared to the iPhone 16 series, RAM has increased in all models except for the base model.

Here is how much RAM is in the iPhone 16 models:
  • iPhone 16: 8GB
  • iPhone 16 Plus: 8GB
  • iPhone 16 Pro: 8GB
  • iPhone 16 Pro Max: 8GB
Xcode has accurately revealed RAM amounts for many iPhone generations.

All of the new iPhone models will be available to pre-order starting Friday, September 12 at 5 a.m. Pacific Time in the U.S. and many other countries and regions. The devices are set to launch one week later, on Friday, September 19.

Great to see that the Air has the same RAM as the pro series, I thought it might’ve been docked there. I’ll probably end up going for the Air, it’s a great phone in a slim package, only things I’ll miss from my 15 pro is the extra cameras and apparently the Air only supports USB 2 speeds?? So that’s a bit lame but overall I would take the bigger screen and better battery life (supposedly) and I hated how bulky the 15 pro is in my pocket so the Air is really meant for me.

The 17 pro is surprisingly lame.. the ugliest design Apple has ever released for the pro series. The Air on the other hand is probably their prettiest design ever.

I wonder what the utility of the extra 4 GB on the Air/Pro is (12 vs 8 GB). Do you need it for Apple Intelligence? Or maybe for more advanced photo video recording features?

My current iPhone 13 has only 4 GB. I can't say that I noticed any performance problems so far.
apple intelligence uses 3gb when invoked

The Air has the pro chip, the base model is meant for more budget conscious consumer. The Air is basically a compromise for people that care less about peak camera abilities (and a little less battery life).

I was surprised to see the Air also has bigger screen than the 17 pro so that’s awesome, the max would be too much for me so it’s a nice middle ground for size.

I dunno about anyone else but my iPhone 14 Pro constantly reloads apps with 6GB RAM. 8GB might be good today but I feel it will crawl in just a year or two considering how bad 6GB runs.

12GB to me is the new bare minimum so by default I will choose the Air over the 17.

Interesting. So if they start using larger models, 8 GB could not be enough to run them. Well that's not nice.
unless they optimize but given the trend I doubt it. again, I didnt check since then, but last I looked the experience could get sluggish on an ipad pro with 8gb of ram so that doesn't bode well

I don't think its enough especially with LLM on device .

It’s 22g lighter not 18
