There have been several alleged leaked details of the iPhone 17 Air, Apple's rumored new slim iPhone, but images have been limited to grainy shots taken in component factories. However, this hyper-realistic concept created by WEIS Studio gives us the best idea yet of what Apple's thin device might actually look like.

The concept design is inspired by recent leaks indicating that the device will have a super-slim 5.5mm profile. For comparison, the iPhone 16 Pro measures 8.25mm in thickness, while the 11-inch M4 iPad Pro comes in at 5.3mm. That measurement doesn't include the camera bump, which could be thicker to accommodate the single 48-megapixel rear camera rumored for the device.

In terms of size, rumors suggest the iPhone 17 Air will have a 6.6-inch display, which will put it in between the iPhone 17 and the iPhone 17 Pro Max in size. As mentioned, it will have a single-lens rear camera, and Apple could be planning for a horizontal bar-like camera bump at the back.

The iPhone 17 Air is rumored to come with a 120Hz ProMotion display and Apple's in-house 5G modem. It's also expected to feature the A19 chip, Wi-Fi 7, and a more durable display material designed to resist drops and scratches.

Unlike the iPhone 17 Pro models, which prioritize high-end hardware, Apple is reportedly positioning the iPhone 17 Air as a design-focused device. While it may not have the most advanced internal components, its refreshed aesthetic could be a major selling point.

Daaaang. That’s fugly. The horizontal camera bump with only one camera looks ridiculous.

I still don't understand this device at all, I'm really interested in the keynote to see how they're putting 'whatever the 17 air is' in the market and in their product line.

I think for people that do not want to take a brick around all day. You can get portability via making it smaller (which did not work) or making it thinner+lighter. Of course, I'm assuming that the device will be lighter, otherwise will make less sense.

Sometimes you don't need even to have a particular market, just bringing something new will bring the attention of the people. iPhones of the recent years are really boring and this will bring some fresh air to the line. Oh.. I've said "air" ...

Protusiongate, seriously what a way to ruin an amazing design. I hope the final one is better on that regard, I'm really tempted for this one to replace my 12 mini.
I have the 13 mini, and really hope it will serve me (2 more years) until Tim has left!
Hoping for someone with at least some vision to become next CEO.

Respectfully, I’d argue it also is how they move during the peak of their success. It’s called diversification and it’s important to keep product lines competitive. Notice: the iPod (2001) was joined by the iPod Mini (2004) then the shuffle (2005), Nano (2005) and Touch (2007). The iPod then hit its sales peak in 2008, when there were four simultaneous versions covering every price point from $79 to $600. Same with the Mac, once the Mac finally hit a decent stride in the mid 2000s, Steve and Apple did the exact same thing as the iPod. They diversified. Steve’s famous Mac quadrant that featured the iMac, iBook, powerMac and PowerBook didn’t last very long. These products were joined by the G4Cube that was later discontinued, then the product line expanded once again to feature the Mac Mini (2005), and after most of the product lines were renamed during the Intel transition they were later joined by the MacBook Air (2008) and the standard aluminum MacBook (2008) that later just became the 13 inch MacBook Pro (2009). So now there were four laptops and three desktops, a lot of diversification over 10 years. Now there was a Mac that started at every price point from $500 to thousands. The idea that Apple‘s most successful product in history, the iPhone, would never start to diversify is ridiculous. It’s not even that unusual in their product lineup, not counting old models there are five iPhones, all that quite distinct price points.

Excellent, truly excellent post.

I don't like it - but presumably it's not aesthetic - it must also house components for FACE ID, decent front facing camera and all the rest of it, freeing up room for a thin but larger battery? It HAS TO. Otherwise this is madness.
Honestly, if it’s just a pretty piece of glass, as long as it makes it not rock anymore I’ll take it lol

So it has over half a bump for absolutely no reason whatsoever. What's in there, a battery?

What a deeply stupid design.

It's the thinnest iPhone ever, except where it isn't! We think you're going to love this new design that you'll for sure all put in a thick case to make the back of the device flush with the fat part. But at least that space will be wasted instead of filled with useful stuff like batteries!

Man, is that ugly and same with the 17 Pro Max mockup!

I have had every iPhone model since the first iPhone, but my 16 Pro Max may be my last for a while if this is the way Apple's design language towards iPhone is going!

If you like the look, good for you, but I bet a massive majority do not. However, with that said, none of this is backed up by any fact (that I am aware of) so it is all speculation and most likely not true.

The critical lineup:
  • iPhone (normal)
  • SE (affordable)
  • Pro (great)
  • Max (large productivity beast). Note, "Pro Max" is a bad name. It should be just "Max".
Plus is irrelevant and should be dropped. Everyone who needs a phablet, will go with Max (and pay some extra).

I would love the lineup to have mini as well. Something that could be reasonably sized (vs overly large "normal" size). Maybe air is a better name than mini for historical reasons, BUT PLEASE do make air smaller than normal iPhone. Not just thinner. Even better would be to keep the thickness and just make it smaller.

MacRumors member macduke has an interesting theory about one purpose for the other rumored but broader camera bump supposedly coming for the iPhone 17 Pro models, that it might be to make room for a longer periscope/folded optics lens assembly for achieving 10x (or more?) optical zoom (https://forums.macrumors.com/thread...sign-allegedly-revealed.2449343/post-33735438). A larger sensor might also be involved.

Maybe that's what this elongated bump is for. But I doubt whether a 10x optical zoom lens stack would need to be that long.

I still think the "Air" is what is supposed to be the SE4.
It does not make sense to have what is a part of the premium 17 line up and only have ONE CAMERA simply bc of a design.
