iPhone 17 Air Model Enters Product Introduction Phase at Foxconn

Definitely waiting for this.

A thinner and lighter device with 120hz would be a major improvement. I’m tired of Pro phones and their bulk, but 60hz has been keeping me off base models.

2025 should give this as an option to iPhone 17, which is great. Either way phone weight will be going down.

I'm always curious to see upcoming/new phones to see if they finally release one that I want. I don't expect that to be the case with the 17 series but I'm curious about them just the same. The new SE is the one I find the most intriguing right now.

What I'd love would be something like the iPod touch with the curved back:

I always thought that felt lovely in the hand. And if they were truly putting the camera in the *centre* (ie the middle on both axis) then you could make it thick enough in the middle to do it without a camera bump, while being thin at the edge and feeling great in the hand.

Very inefficient use of space though, technically. Though frankly I wouldn't care.
That is actually a wonderful design. I had an LG G3 back in the day that had a similar back and it was incredible to hold. That is still my all time favorite phone to this day, it was that amazing to hold.

This new iPhone Air looks so modern that It may take away sales from other models.

One thing I would be cautious of is a First Generation Apple 5G Modem though.

In trying to understand who this phone is for I’ve come up with the idea that this is probably the ultimate minimalist phone.

As a 13 mini user I won’t be happy with the screen size, but it might still have a lot of the same appeal. Don’t need three cameras, don’t need a huge battery to watch TikToks, just the essentials in an efficient design.

In that case why is an ultimate minimalist phone at ~6.6". They could have it 6.1" like iPhone or even 5.8" like iPhone X if the mini was too small.

I'm trying to understand why I'm intrigued, since yes, the rumored size will be noticeably larger than a "regular" iPhone, let alone my 13 mini. Minimal camera, lighter weight, and less "bulk" all sound good. Maybe I'm attracted to it because, like my mini, so many enjoy disparaging it, hehe.

What the rumours doesn't make any sense is that an iPhone 17 would have two camera.

Why would I spend extra money on a thinner iPhone 17 plus with one camera less?

Why isn't this an iPhone SE Plus?

For me, because it's more minimal. I'd pay more for completely flat-back iPhone with no cameras.

I'm one of the few that don't care anything about iPhone cameras, though.

I suppose it depends on which rumors one chooses to believe. [Edit: we don't know the price.]

For all we know, it's just an elaborate trap to eliminate leakers from the supply chain.

Calling it "Apple Phone" would be better. Apple seem to be moving away from the "I" branding.

Apple Phone Air
Apple Phone Pro

iPhone is an iconic brand, there's no way they're moving away from that for a long time.

I think they don't tend to use the 'i' with new products as it did get a bit oversaturated, they've got plenty of 'i' products (iPhone, iPad, iMac, iOS, iMessage) they din't really need to add more and wanted to add a bit of variety. But now we've got plenty of Apple x and x Pod products (Apple Watch, Apple TV, Apple Music, AirPods, HomePod) maybe we'll see a return to it with the new range of home products they have planned. iHome maybe?

I think i___ is done, and Home ___ still has options.

When they released Apple TV+ I'm sure there was an internal argument for renaming the Apple TV box, and I hope they know that I feel their frustration for not getting their way. And perhaps the team arguing for a different name, years ago, for the Apple TV box is thinking, "I tried to tell you. What a mess."

i’m super curious what the price tag will look like for this “iPhone Slim”

because if it’s more expensive than the Pro Max while having a single camera and other downgrades, I feel like that would be a tough sell

However, if it slots into the exact same price as the current iPhone Plus at $899, i could see it becoming an interesting proposition.

Think about this just like the original MacBook Air from 2008.
The original MacBook Air was between the lower-end MacBook and the MacBook Pro.
While the MacBook was $1100, and the MacBook Pro was $2000 above, the MacBook Air was $1800 with a hard drive or $3100 with an SSD.
Despite this, though, it was pretty much worse than the MacBook or the MacBook Pro, worst performance, worst battery life, less I/O.
But it was insanely thin, and eventually it lowered and lowered in price until the MacBook was just completely discontinued.
I think we will probably see this happen with the iPhone eventually.
The low-end $700-900 line become the iPhone Air in two different sizes and the iPhone Pro in two sizes. Maybe this will be the time they decide to stop using numbers as well, maybe for the 20th anniversary since neither “iPhone 20” or “iPhone XX” really seem usable.

Spectacular!

Oh ... I LOVE that bad and curved sides/back

SO great in the hand 😍

Is this “production introduction phase” a production phase for every Apple product or just for products that are significantly different from the predecessors (e.g. iPhone Air/slim?

Why? The iPhone is iconic. I agree with you that they're moving away from the I branding but I don't see how removing the I would be a value add. Many people would still call it the iPhone for at least a decade, not knowing or caring that Apple decided to call it something else.

I think I'm done with the Pro models, in no way I'm replacing my 15PMx until it's absolutely necessary in about 3-4 more years. But I'm most definitely planning to go for the less expensive regular or these Air models.

Heck my wife asked for the 16, inspite of having a 14PMx and she's liking it more enough to switch that as her main phone and the later as work phone.

It make sense for MacBook Air because there were no other Computer ( not just the Mac ) that was this thin. The actual technology to make a Laptop that thin was expensive. Not only was MacBook Air the first MacBook to have SSD, which was expensive at the time, it was also one with Ultra Low Voltage CPU specifically designed by Intel. Along with all other innovation required to make it thin. It was expensive because it is a technical marvel.

There is nothing technical about making an iPhone thinner in 2025 other than making different sets of trade offs.

Same here. And that is what an SE should have been like. Flat Back.

True.

Glad to hear about it. Should be a very interesting iPhone with the new design. Waiting to hear more rumors about it in the coming months. Hope it comes in some nice colours.
