It make sense for MacBook Air because there were no other Computer ( not just the Mac ) that was this thin. The actual technology to make a Laptop that thin was expensive. Not only was MacBook Air the first MacBook to have SSD, which was expensive at the time, it was also one with Ultra Low Voltage CPU specifically designed by Intel. Along with all other innovation required to make it thin. It was expensive because it is a technical marvel.

There is nothing technical about making an iPhone thinner in 2025 other than making different sets of trade offs.
If it were that simple, they would’ve done it already.
As far as I know, there really isn’t any mainstream smart phone that is M4 iPad Pro or even the last iPod touch levels of thin.
Even the thinnest iPhone is still almost a MM thicker than the latest iPod touch, and 2 MM thicker than the current iPad Pro.

There are 10 thousand reason why they dont do it even if it was possible. It is simple, by Apple, $3T market cap standard. You get less battery life.

The thinnest Smartphone, folding ones are at 4.3mm. There are plenty of phone that are sub 6mm even *before* folding phones happened.

I think I'm done with the Pro models, in no way I'm replacing my 15PMx until it's absolutely necessary in about 3-4 more years. But I'm most definitely planning to go for the less expensive regular or these Air models.

Heck my wife asked for the 16, inspite of having a 14PMx and she's liking it more enough to switch that as her main phone and the later as work phone.
I have never had a Pro model, and its not due to money. Heck my wife has a 15 Pro. Since the Pro models have existed I have had an 11, 13, and now 15 Plus. One of the big reasons I keep getting the non Pro versions is that they weigh a lot less and are more manageable. I may get a Pro version someday but so far I have never felt like I was missing out buying the non Pro versions. I would like the telephoto lens no doubt, but I just don't want to deal with the increased weight of the Pro's.
