Ipod touch is 6.1mm. I went to grab it from the drawer. Feels sturdy and great to hold. The modern batteries + efficient cpus should help it last more than a 13 mini. Of course it is for people that don't game and take care of their phones.

That would require for Apple to bend the laws of physics.

No, it would require Apple being honest about the thickness of their devices, or putting a more minimal camera setup in the phone.

Cameras, for me, are the least interesting part of a phone.

Im expecting no camera bump. If theres a bump they have failed. It should be single
Camera flush lens slim all over. Camera bumps
Are ridiculous. If the bump got half as much hate as the dynamic island we might get somewhere.
Now if it has no camera bump, then I might be tempted!

Actually, I'd be pretty conflicted. I like the iPhone cameras, and they're pretty bloody useful for my job, so a downgrade in the camera department wouldn't be amazing. If they sort it out well enough though, it should be good enough. I took some pretty nice photos with my iPhone 5 back in the day.

lol. Don’t worry, add the case to it and so much for 6mm. This phone will be easy to break.
Someone hasn't watched a JerryRigEverything video in a few years. Or, really, any of those "can I break the latest smartphone" videos that so many do every time a new flagship smartphone launches.

Smartphone makers face too many costs associated with phones that bend and break. Let alone lawsuits in countries that have more fair consumer rights protections.

The glass will shatter partially or completely with enough force applied, sure. But the iPhone chassis won't "break" or bend.

Go to a store and look at and hold an iPad Pro M4 and then come back here and tell me why Apple couldn't utilize the same technology to take an iPhone 16 Pro Max and make slimmer without a lot of compromises.

No, there's nothing pragmatic about striving for this level of slimness. But aesthetics and luxury are just as much reasons to buy one product over the other. And many will happily pay extra to have something that stands out more luxurious. iPhones Pro have already proven this.

Unlike a new iPhone mini, or an iPhone Pro mini, a Pro Max-sized but slimmer and lighter iPhone would land well with the average consumer who really just wants as big a display as possible and as much battery life as possible.

If this iPhone Air doesn't have to be much more than a premium iPhone Plus or Pro Max that is lighter and slimmer but with great battery life. That's enough to hit with the target demographic.

i would quite like the old 3g / macbook air teardrop style shape to come back. This made the device feel smaller in the hand, but without compromising too much the internal volume . I would be fine with a 10mm thick centre if it tapered to 2-3 mm at the edges

I do miss the my old 2012 MacBook Air wedge. That shape was comfortable to use.

Out of all the iPhones I've had, the 5 was my favourite. I seem to be a bit of an outlier (to no surprise to me) because I prefer the square sides. Somehow I find them easier to use for a phone. I just wish my MacBook Pro had a bit more wedge to it...

I would love to have a thin phone again but without the extra cameras etc. it makes zero sense to buy. Same price as the Pro but without the features? silly.

The iphone camera is good, and it does great snaps, but the computational is doing 90% of the heavy lifting. The actual images from the iphone camera are pretty bad really. I am using my real cameras much more these days I don't need a wannabe pretend camera in my phone anymore. A 'good enough' camera with one lens, and no bump is going to be fine for any snaps and reference shots i take due to the great computational as pect here. It's true that it's all about the software. I mean pictures on my 4, 5, 7, XS were all 'fine' without the stupid bulge. We want a light, compact, iphone that's 'just enough' without all the extra stuff

This is a fail-safe affair for Apple. Firstly they will sell thousands of them to YouTubers trying to bend them, then can release a few ads along the lines of: a) “sturdy as a rock!” and b) “don’t bend it if it’s not broken, silly!” type of thing. 😋 Basically, it should be interesting…

In a research note with Hong Kong-based investment bank Haitong today, obtained by MacRumors, Apple analyst Jeff Pu said he agrees with a recent rumor claiming that the so-called "iPhone 17 Air" will be around 6mm thick.

iPhone-17-Slim-Feature-Single-Camera-1-Redux.jpg

"We agreed with the recent chatter of an 6mm thickness ultra-slim design of the iPhone 17 Slim model," he wrote.

If that measurement proves to be accurate, there would be a few noteworthy aspects. First, the iPhone 17 Air would become the thinnest iPhone ever, coming in under the current 6.9mm record held by the iPhone 6. Second, the iPhone 17 Air would be around three quarters as thick as any of the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro models.

While some customers may have hoped that the iPhone 17 Air would be even thinner, there is obviously a limit to how thin the battery and other components can be. If the device comes in around 6mm, it would still be impressively thin and light compared to the increasingly bulkier models released over the past few years.

Here is how the iPhone 17 Air's thickness could compare to other models:

  • iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max: 8.25mm
  • iPhone 16 and 16 Plus: 7.8mm
  • iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max: 8.25mm
  • iPhone 15 and 15 Plus: 7.8mm
  • iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max: 7.85mm
  • iPhone 14 and 14 Plus: 7.8mm
  • iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max: 7.65mm
  • iPhone 13 and 13 mini: 7.65mm
  • iPhone 12 Pro and Pro Max: 7.4mm
  • iPhone 12 and 12 mini: 7.4mm
  • iPhone 11 Pro and Pro Max: 8.1mm
  • iPhone 11: 8.3mm
  • iPhone XS and XS Max: 7.7mm
  • iPhone XR: 8.3mm
  • iPhone X: 7.7mm
  • iPhone 8 Plus: 7.5mm
  • iPhone 8: 7.3mm
  • iPhone 7 Plus: 7.3mm
  • iPhone 7: 7.1mm
  • iPhone 6s Plus: 7.3mm
  • iPhone 6s: 7.1mm
  • iPhone 6 Plus: 7.1mm
  • iPhone 6: 6.9mm
  • iPhone 17 Air rumor: 6mm
All models prior to the iPhone 6 were between 7.6mm and 12.3mm thick.

While the iPhone 17 Air could be the thinnest iPhone ever, it would not be the thinnest Apple product ever. That record is held by the 2024 version of the 13-inch iPad Pro, which is just 5.1mm thick. In addition, the last iPod nano was 5.4mm thick.

For those who have not been following iPhone 17 Air rumors, several credible sources have claimed that Apple plans to release a redesigned, significantly thinner iPhone 17 model next year. The device's name is not yet known, so we are referring to it as the iPhone 17 Air for now. Pu has gone with the nickname "iPhone 17 Slim" instead.

There have been conflicting rumors about the design and specifications for the device, but most sources have agreed that it will have around a 6.6-inch display. In July, Apple supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said he expects the device to have a standard A19 chip, a Dynamic Island, a single rear camera, and an Apple-designed 5G modem.

Last month, Pu agreed the iPhone 17 Air will have a 6.6-inch display. He also expects the device to feature an aluminum frame, Face ID, a single 48-megapixel rear camera, a 24-megapixel front camera, and 8GB of RAM for Apple Intelligence.

Apple will likely unveil the iPhone 17 Air in September 2025, so the device is still far away from launching, and rumors could change over time.

iPhone 15 Pro is not 8.25mm - I own one and that camera is THICK! 12.75mm including the camera - 64.7% thicker than advertised. If it's 6mm it needs to include the camera.

It's annoying - they just want the thinness for marketing. There is little practical benefit in making it thinner. Are they running out of ideas?
They ran out of ideas circa iPhone 5, or did you not notice?

Give me a phone with a curved back that actually feels good to hold. Stick the camera in the center so it doesn’t need a bump.

And ffs Tim Apple, make me an iPhone mini.

Finally we're getting foldable iPhone
I truly don't understand why people want this. To each his/her own, but I've seen the foldable androids, and they're trash. The screen is noticeable both visually and by touch. On every single one I've seen. It's also more parts (hinges/screws) to break, so everyone will just say whine about that when it inevitably breaks. I don't get it.

Is anyone really wanting it to be thinner? One step forward two steps back with iPhone design these days.
Came here specifically to say this. I would frankly prefer the thickest iphone in history so that i don't have to deal with the stupid camera bump and could have a bigger/better battery as well. just give me a phone that lays flat with or without a case.

A lot of people are saying “I don’t want a thinner iPhone, and a lot of people I know don’t want one, so why would ANYONE want one?”

I’m guessing Apple has done some market analysis to justify making a thinner iPhone for a large-enough segment of their customers. Some of the responses in this forum indicate that.

The single camera lens will be fine for people who don’t take spatial photos or videos. People who don’t care if their iPhone is thicker since they prefer longer battery life will still be able to buy a non-Air iPhone, though I doubt if Apple will make a model that's thicker than they are now, as a way to get longer battery life. I suspect the iPhone Air will still have battery life comparable to today’s iPhones, even though that's not enough for many people. Maybe removing two of the camera lenses will create more room for the battery, though it’s hard to see at the moment how that would entirely make up for reducing the overall thickness by about 2mm.

Counterpoint, camera bumps don't bother me and I like the Dynamic Island.
Counter-counterpoint, in part: I tolerate the camera bump (though it makes it tougher to slide the phone into my front jeans pocket, past my wallet), and I kind of like the Dynamic Island because sometimes it's useful, but I wouldn't mind seeing it turned into a disappearing version of itself when not needed.

And the camera bump will make the whole thing pointless.

Give me an iPhone Fold already. It would be a beast running an optimized version of iOS on it. Ever since I got my Galaxy Fold 6, I’ll never be able to go back to a regular phone and I also have an iPhone 16 Pro 😅
I've tried a few folding phones (Galaxy and Pixel), but the first thing I see is the crease in the middle of the screen and I can't unsee it... I certainly wouldn't swap a current no-folding iPhone for a folding one using the current folding screen technologies.
