Unclear? It's pretty obvious why the Air is getting a titanium frame and the Pro doesn't need it... Titanium is stronger than aluminum, and with how thin it is, it's needed.

I miss the days when I could just buy the new iPhone or iPad.

I have no clue if I’m supposed to want titanium or aluminum. I guess titanium sounds cooler cause they don’t make soda cans out of it?

hey, no one wants a variety of options but sometimes we just have to push through and handle it. I struggle at the soda machines, but I tough it out.

If that so why make bendgate again for there premium phones it makes no sense
Why would those thicker phones suddenly have bending problems with Aluminum when that hasn't been an issue for a while now. The non-pros were all aluminum and haven't been bending. The pro phones had either steel or Titanium mainly to make them look more premium.

My main point is I doubt they would make the air titanium if there not doing it for the premium phones the last they’re gonna make the pros cheaper I also doubt it would be another bendgate I’d hope Apple would have the aluminum issues panned out

Well, my understanding is that Apple has expressed the desire to move away from titanium for environmental reasons because its production is very resource intensive. But maybe (just my guess) the risk of bending is high enough with the Air to warrant breaking that new direction on Titanium. I suppose it could also be for cosmetic reasons since the Air is intended to be a show off phone more than the other models -- unlike most phones, likely 95% of Airs will have no case.

The rumored iPhone 17 Air will have a titanium frame, according to Apple analyst Jeff Pu.

In an investor note with equity research firm GF Securities this week, Pu also said the iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, and iPhone 17 Pro Max will have aluminum frames, so the iPhone 17 Air will apparently be the only new model to use titanium.

It is unclear why the iPhone 17 Air would have a titanium frame, as aluminum is lighter than titanium, which would be fitting for the device's rumored ultra-thin and lightweight design. Titanium is generally stronger than aluminum, however, so perhaps the material is necessary to ensure that the iPhone 17 Air's thin chassis is durable.

Last year, another Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said the iPhone 17 Air's frame would use both titanium and aluminum, so there could be a mix of both materials. Apple surely has its reasons, and it may discuss them during its iPhone 17 event in September.

Since the iPhone X in 2017, all of Apple's highest-end iPhone models have featured either stainless steel or titanium frames, so the return to an aluminum frame for the iPhone 17 Pro models this year would be a notable change.

Here is what Pu expects:
  • iPhone 17: Aluminum frame
  • iPhone 17 Air: Titanium frame
  • iPhone 17 Pro: Aluminum frame
  • iPhone 17 Pro Max: Aluminum frame
Here are the materials used for the iPhone 16 series:
  • iPhone 16: Aluminum frame
  • iPhone 16 Plus: Aluminum frame
  • iPhone 16 Pro: Titanium frame
  • iPhone 16 Pro Max: Titanium frame

I want titanium on the pro ones please! My 15 Pro and my dad's 16 Pro Max are doing perfectly fine even though we drop our phone a lot! Their frames are not even dented

It drives me crazy when people say aluminum is lighter than titanium, without any context. Titanium is much more rigid, so you need less of it to create an object with the same strength as it would have if you made it with aluminum. Ti is lighter than Al when you consider equivalent durability in the ways that matter for making a phone chassis. That's why the 15 Pro is lighter than the 14 Pro.
Good point except the 14 Pro was stainless. 16 Pro to 17 Pro would be the first time we get to make this comparison ‘directly’, if these rumors hold true.

Setting aside the pros and cons of aluminum vs titanium and how just one year earlier Apple hyped the use of titanium in iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max, once again Apple proves how cost cutting and gross profits reign supreme.

The Apple Faithful have been convinced that the company knows what's best for them, a mantra promoted for years. Apples profits prove it, a brilliant result of exemplary marketing expertise.

If the rumors are true, this POV holds some merit. Apple better have a damn good reason for expecting us to pay Pro dollars for non-Pro materials.

I've been hearing the main reason is environmental. And 70%+ of users can't even tell there's a difference with a case on their phones (unlike the Air which will very rarely have a case on it).

"Did you?" or "Do I get the Air or Pro" threads this September are gonna be fire. Apple will laugh its way to the bank. Going to be an interesting product cycle. The Air is the wait until you hold me and play with me iPhone. Then the dilemma and perhaps the lust will begin. The Plus didn’t evoke that as it was easy to anticipate, and the Mini had the effect on too small a market for Cook’s and Maestri’s standards, unfortunately.

Think the switch to aluminum for Pro models is for weight reduction and for better heat dissipation. The Air and the upcoming foldable might be using Titanium so that durability improves. The Air might be needing it especially because it is going to be very slim.

Bit early to say how people will use an Air. I’d think most people will still use a case out of habit and because the same concerns will apply still in terms of potential damage, but it’ll be a thinner case.

That said, when I initially read the headline I was disappointed for a moment, but quickly realised I’ll be one of the people using a case so in the end there’s no particular issue with how I’ll use the device.
