GPU can be utilized by any app that requires number crunching. Many photo editing tools on real computers will use its GPU.
For sure, but they aren’t removing the GPU, it’ll just have fewer cores. I’m sure it’ll be adequate for lighter use. Plus, it’ll prolong the efficacy of the thinner battery.

I’m all in on the Air. I’m always near a charger if battery life is an issue, and I’m loving the form factor if the leaks prove to be accurate. After using a Pro model a couple years ago, it was overkill for my needs.

If I was in the market for a phone, I would be looking at it too. The 16e (17e) is a very close second.

I just want something lighter.

Apple customers know little to nothing about specs and won't even realize what they are really buying
Do you think the majority of non-Apple customers (Samsung, Pixel, or other companies) really do realize what they buy as opposed to Apple customers? I do not believe Apple is selling an inferior product in their lower tier phones and it is good that the customers have no reason to worry about that.

I'm with you. I have a 16 Pro simply because I never had a Pro model before and wanted to try one to see if I really need one. I don't. While I really like the telephoto lens I hate how heavy my 16 Pro is. Never again will I get a phone this heavy, no matter what features I have to give up in order to have a light phone. Knowing what I know now, if I could go back in time I would get either a 16 or 16e.

As someone that works in IT and deals with a lot of people I would say while Android phone users are slightly more tech knowledgeable than iphone users, neither group as a whole knows that much when it comes to specs. They don't research specs and benchmarks, they seem to buy a phone pretty much on screen size and color of the phone.

Oh, I completely get that. I guess my point is, Apple Silicon has advanced so much at this point that are we that hard up for performance advances in a phone form factor? I've had every flagship phone since the iPhone 13 Pro, and the day-to-day performance benefits going from generation to generation have seemed "eh".

Besides gaming and content creation, I'm just trying to see where people would be "disappointed" performance-wise with this move. The number one thing that people have bitched about regarding the iPhone 17 Air seems to be the battery, so this move seems "OK". Those who want performance and battery will probably cater more towards the Pro anyway.

Yes, you make a good point. I don't think the majority will be disappointed, and I think the purported 'Air' model will sell like hotcakes.

I do think there's something to be said for the iterative updates, in that they keep things feeling fast and allowing Apple, and developers, to do more with the hardware that might have been a struggle only a version or two ago.

Because many people want a smaller lighter phone . The current iphones are heavier than nokia ‘brick’ phones from 25 years ago. I hate having my phone weigh down my shorts or pants when walking about. I actually leave my phone behind sometimes so i am looking forward to a lighter phone as are many. Also we dont mind about batteries since we have access to charging and battery packs throughout the day. We arent ‘road warriors’ its no big deal to charge a phone for 15 min here and there if needed.
It will be a niche audience like yourself. Not a big seller. I think they're doing it in preparation for the fold. They need to get a thinner phone concept down and then fold it. IMO

But if you are away from a charger a whole day and you install a battery pack on a light phone, isn’t it gonna be as heavy or bulky as a Pro Max? Or even heavier or bulkier?
And then the phone will weigh down your shorts or pants.

I get it if you are near a charger, but when you are not, the problem starts, at least imo🙂

Honest questions that I can't figure out: where might a person be all day long without access to electricity? I live in the US so always have access to electricity, but maybe that is not the case in other countries?

Also, why install a battery pack on a phone when you can just use a portable battery bank?

Apple's upcoming iPhone 17 Air will include an A19 Pro chip with a 5-core GPU, according to Weibo leaker Fixed Focus Digital. The Chinese account, which has over two million followers, claims that only the iPhone 17 Pro models will have the full 6-core GPU A19 Pro configuration.

It's the second time in as many months that Fixed Focus Digital has claimed to reveal accurate details about the ultra-thin device's chip specifications. The reduced GPU core count suggests Apple is using binned chips based on yields, or may be managing thermal constraints in the slimmer form factor, but most users are unlikely to notice the performance difference during typical usage.

The claim contradicts earlier reporting from industry analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who over a year ago predicted the iPhone 17 Air would use a standard A19 chip, rather than the Pro variant.

The Weibo leaker also claims that the base iPhone 17 model will use an A19 chip. A few months ago, supply chain analyst Jeff Pu said the device would have an A18 chip, but he has since rescinded the claim – he now also expects the regular iPhone 17 model to be equipped with the A19.

Fixed Focus Digital previously broke the news ahead of launch about the iPhone 16e name for Apple's upcoming iPhone SE successor.

Apple is expected to debut the iPhone 17 lineup next month, with an announcement rumored to be happening on Tuesday, September 9, so we don't have long to wait to find out all the specifics.

Sounds like Apple is launching a new model just to be able to use chips with faulty cores (AKA binning) that otherwise could not be used for the other models.

I have read they are doing this in preparation for the thinner lighter Pro models expected in the next few years.

Maybe if you like to hike, fishing, hunting etc and being away from electricity?

If you’re doing that there is no problem to carry around portable battery back to your 17 Air, otherwise it would be cumbersome.

Or you can just buy a Pro Max/Plus and don’t have to worry about battery life.
