does anyone actually care? The current iphone is already thin enough. In fact id rather they add a bit of thickness and increase the battery capacity.
A lot of people care. I already end the day with 50% battery left. I don't need any more. I'm very interested in a thinner iPhone. Hence why this model has stolen all the headlines for a year leading up to it.

Any chance left that the Pro models don't look like this? What a strange decision to bring out an extra thin model next to these bricks.
I could see it. The Pro models have the highest powered processors and cameras and need a battery that can handle that. If these rumors are right, maybe we're looking at a phone with some power dialed back so it can survive on a small battery. I could see them both existing in the same lineup.

I still have a Nokia from 1996, the one which has a credit card sized sim, and interchangeable battery packs, the 'maxi pack' comprises of 6x AA NiCd batteries. This lasted several days, but only because you were doing exactly 2 things with the phone; calling and text on a simple LCD display, and on 2G.
I had a more advanced mobile phone, the Philips Xenium 9@9 in 2002 or something. It was more advanced and it had a standby battery of over 3 weeks. Perhaps 4. I wish I still had it, but I let someone borrow it and RIP.

Ok, it's "thinner".

So what?
Great question! When we say something is "thinner" it means it takes up less physical space. So, if you're carrying it in a pocket you don't have as much bulk and weight in said pocket. You see, while you can fit a larger and heavier device into a pocket, at some threshold (which is different for different people), the pocket starts to sag, or the device bulges out in a way some find unsightly or even uncomfortable.

Similarly, a lot of people find it easier to hold a device that is thinner and lighter, versus one that is thicker and heavier. It's sort of similar to the pocket situation, but here we are talking about a hand instead of a pocket.

One interesting thing to note is that AFAIK, Apple is probably not going to force all iPhone buyers to buy a thinner and lighter device. From the rumors, it sounds like this would be an additional iPhone in the product lineup. So, if this turns out to be true, people who do not prefer a lighter and thinner iPhone could continue to buy iPhones similar to the ones they make now.

I hope this helps!

Apple plans to release an all-new super thin iPhone this year, debuting it alongside the iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, and iPhone 17 Pro Max. We've seen pictures of dummy models, cases, and renders with the design, but Lewis Hilsenteger of Unbox Therapy today showed off newer dummy models that give us a better idea of just how thin the "iPhone 17 Air" will be.

The iPhone 17 Air is expected to be around 5.5mm thick (with a thicker camera bar area), making it the thinnest iPhone to date. With the iPhone 17 Pro models rumored to be around 8.725mm thick, there will be a notable difference between the iPhone 17 Air and the rest of the iPhone 17 models.

Hilsenteger was impressed by the thinness of the iPhone 17 Air, speculating on whether it would bend because of the minimal casing. Rumors suggest that Apple will use a titanium and aluminum chassis for the iPhone, with the aim of ensuring it's strong enough not to bend. Back in 2014, Apple dealt with "bendgate" after some users found that the iPhone 6 Plus started bending from being tucked inside a pocket. Hilsenteger's YouTube channel even went viral after he did one of the original iPhone 6 bend test videos.

Apple also decided to keep the display size to 6.6 inches because of fears that a larger display would make the iPhone 17 Air too susceptible to bending. Originally, Apple wanted to use a 6.9-inch display, which would put sizing on par with the iPhone 17 Pro Max. That Apple tweaked display size during development suggests it took the potential for bending into account while creating the super thin iPhone.

Hilsenteger also questioned what the iPhone 17 Air's battery life will be like because of the thinness of the design, but Apple is eliminating features like extra camera lenses in order to ensure enough room for the battery, as well as using a more efficient Apple-designed C1 modem and optimizing through software. Battery life is expected to be on par with current iPhone models.

More on what's expected from the iPhone 17 Air models can be found in our iPhone 17 Air roundup.

Yes, it's very thin if you pretend there's no camera bump. Let's all close our eyes and pretend the camera bump isn't there.

I'd say our phones are already "thin enough" but the iphone 17 air sounds marketed towards businesses and especially tiktok influencers and preppy young people (which is why I wouldn't be surprised to be more expensive than the Pro Max).

Its pretty much impossible to look at the phone market without looking at the competition. https://m.mi.com/commodity/detail/21136

I really like the iPhone 15 Pro, but dearly miss the 5-SE-12mini series, and would buy another “small” phone in a heart beat. While I’m wishing (for TC’s departure), make it foldable so it would slip into my pocket even better. I don’t care if there is a crease in the middle. I take photos and videos and look at them on my iPad or giant Apple TV driven home theatre anyway. Doesn’t Apple understand that?

Oh, off topic, but while I’m wishing (for an innovative management team) how about a combo IPad/Macbook, hot key switchable between IOS and MacOS, please?

Wait! While I’m wishing…One more thing…how ‘bout some Apple Glasses? These Meta’s are great! No more ear things sticking our of my head. No more fumbling for my camera/phone. But I’m certain that (with new leadership) Apple could do much better.
