The upcoming iPhone 17 base model will feature a larger display than the iPhone 16 base model, according to the latest rumor out of China.

In a post on Chinese social media platform Weibo today, the account Digital Chat Station claimed that the lowest-end iPhone 17 model will be equipped with a 6.3-inch display, up from a 6.1-inch display on the equivalent iPhone 16 model.

Digital Chat Station has more than three million followers on Weibo, and the account has accurately leaked Apple information in the past.

Last month, Counterpoint Research VP Ross Young also said that the iPhone 17 base model will be equipped with a 6.3-inch display.

Young expects these screen sizes for the iPhone 17 series:
  • iPhone 17: 6.3-inch display
  • iPhone 17 Air: 6.6-inch display
  • iPhone 17 Pro: 6.3-inch display
  • iPhone 17 Pro Max: 6.9-inch display
Beyond the larger display, the base iPhone 17 is shaping up to be a minor upgrade over the base iPhone 16, according to rumors. Both devices are expected to have the same overall design, the same A18 chip, and an equal 8GB of RAM. Key new features that are rumored for the lowest-end iPhone 17 include up to a 120Hz display and a 24-megapixel front camera, compared to 60Hz and a 12-megapixel front camera on the iPhone 16.

Apple is expected to unveil the iPhone 17 series in September.

Sure it will be larger (as large as the 16 Pro). Otherwise the old cases would fit. There was a time (iPhone 4-iPhone 6) when old cases were still fitting newer models. This would be more environment friendly than discontinuing the Apple leather case. This company nowadays is only trying to cash in as much money as possible.

Apple will eventually force me to move to both iPhone and Watch "cheaper" line of products if they go on like this. I am already sad that I can't have a phone that is iPhone X size. Current iPhones are already too large for what I want. I guess SE is in my future (and that's not really a terrible thing I guess).

I use the first generation SE as my daily. I found a brand new one on Vinted for a very good price, I've just swapped out the battery recently so it lasts all day, iOS 15 supports everything I need for daily use (iPhone 5 design with true 4G/LTE support, modern carplay, apple pay, most apps work and still get updates). I'm only missing out on camera, and I grab my 14 Pro whenever I need to take some serious pictures. I can't carry around the 14 Pro, I just can't, it's too heavy and too bulky and it's difficult to use with one hand and I really have to wear a belt otherwise it's pulling my pants down. Smaller phone isn't perfect for people who doomscroll with 6h a day of screentime, but for people who really just need an iPhone, it's still very usable (and pretty much perfect for me).

It’s especially not terrible if the next SE’s modem can also receive mmWave 5G. But, even as is, the SE is just fine - and battery life is quite good.

They should eliminate the upcoming iPhone 17E and replace it with an iPhone 17 Mini because what’s the point of the regular iPhone 17 if competing with the E series? The Mini makes sense for a budget model. It will sell like crazy. 🤑
I second this. With battery tech, cooling tech, processors and displays getting more efficient seems like a no brainer. I know I'd like a smaller smart phone and almost bought a 13 mini but i wasn't ready buy a new phone from a 12 pro and the 12 mini had poor battery life at the time I bought the pro. Mini pro would be the dream.

All 7 people that still like tiny phones are going to be so mad. 🤣

I'm not mad, nothing surprises me with Apple today anymore. Every step they take turns out to be a step into a bigger and bigger poop, but still selling a "normal" sized flagship iPhone with Pro features should be one of their priorities. Some people prefer phablets, fine by me, but many won't buy a new iPhone until Apple makes another Mini-sized model. It's at least 50 million people right now, and the number of people waiting for the potential upgrade is growing. Another year without a phone that can be used comfortably with one hand and doesn't pull your pants down while in your pocket means another year of people not upgrading.

Here we go again. An even larger phablet. Will Apple really never again make an actual iPhone? We need a "Mini" model.
Think there will always be the same problem with a Mini for Apple:
- it must cost less than the regular model or people will feel scammed
- it will cannibalize some of the sales of the regular model
- it wouldn't sell very well probably
- many people just adapt and buy the regular model if they don't have a smaller alternative
- it costs money to develop and support. New parts, new factory lines and so on.
- this means Apple is basically spending money to build a model that may make them just lose money. Unlike an even bigger model like the Plus and Max

It's all about how many people just would never buy a phone unless it's Mini. How many hardcore 13 Mini / SE fans still exist that just wouldn't even upgrade if it's not another Mini? Making them happy is worth losing money with all the people who would also buy a regular model but who, given the option to pick a cheaper one would take it? So, it has to justify for it development costs with even smaller profits.
After these years with no Mini model, I think Apple has done the math about this...
Think you Mini lovers should give up, sincerely sorry for you.

I have moved from a Pro Max attitude to a base model attitude. I need to have multiple phones for multiple social media accounts and a Pro Max is significantly heavier and more unwieldy than a base model. It may be fine if you have only one phone, but when you have more than one, you realize what a pain the larger phones are for not much benefit.

I'm an adult male, 5'9", and I have a 16 Pro. I have to say the 6.3" Pro is almost too big for my hands and I'm missing the 6.1" size. These companies need to realize many people just don't have hands as big as they think we do. I hope we start to see 5.8" to 6.1" size phones again.

Hindsight is 20/20, I wish I had bought the 15 Pro last year instead of the 16 Pro this year just for the smaller size and lighter weight.

Just a 0.3 in differences? That's just crazy almost nothing on day to day use. Why not just make the non-pro same screensize and just offer 60hz vs 120hz.

Instead of making a Mini, all they do is keep on increasing the screen size, why don't they make a phone as big as the iPad? Sure make big phones, but at least make a mini model once in 3 years!

This has got to be hitting the limits one would think, right?

If they bump up much more, folks are basically going to be carrying around "very narrow iPad Minis" at some point.

This has become ludicrous.

Have large options all you want, but the way they are just ignoring the fact that our hands and pockets are too small for all these is crazy.
