At some point physics come into play. I for one, won't be buying anything that big and if there is no option from Apple, I will get something else. I don't need a huge screen on my phone. In fact, it is more uncomfortable than anything else. So I vote with my wallet and everyone should do precisely that, instead of "adapting" to a vision by some execs who think everyone should like a big screen.

And I used to upgrade yearly until they started to increase sizes. I would have had at least 3 generations if not 4 between iPhone X and iPhone 13 mini, but I skipped them all because it's uncomfortable. My physical comfort is far more important to me than anything else. Priorities.

Mini fanatics are free to buy anything they want instead of spamming every thread how bad Apple is not meeting their demands.

I think it could be a massive hit. I remember when 6S and 6S Plus came out, hardly anyone was really buying the Plus and 70% of buyers went for the 6S. As you said, it's about positioning of the product - IMO main reason why 12 Mini and 13 Mini didn't sell that well were current offerings at the time and the price. People started spending more and more time glued to their screens, so of course more people prefer larger displays nowadays, but let's say they make a 13 Mini sized iPhone with edge to edge screen (and no notch or island) and if they gave people only two choices (either Mini sized or Plus sized), I think it wouldn't be as big of a difference in sales between the two as it was with 6S and 6S Plus, but worst case scenario would be 50/50. Their iPhone line up currently is a total mess, could use a clean up. Two models, one smaller one bigger, and maybe a third true "Pro" model for those who need gigantic phone with 5 gigantic lenses. Of course, majority will disagree with this because they're just happy with phablets and don't see why shouldn't anyone bother finding a way to make the "Mini" work.
I may agree with you on how good a smaller phone would be but, even if I didn't, I'd love to have the choice of course.
Still, my point is not about how good the phone would be, just what makes Apple more money and there's that contradiction that may make them lose cash by making it even if it's a hit...
I could be wrong, of course, but I believe that's how they've reasoned about it.

Is the margin better on bigger screens or something? Phone size inflation just doesn't make sense otherwise.

What's really weird is how they aren't even converging around one (or a couple) exact specific size.

With each revision and iteration it seems like they change some tiny aspect of the size or configuration.

Why does it have to be "them vs us" for you guys? We just want an iPhone that's comfortable to hold for us. You love phablets, good for you. I'm not trying to shut you up, nobody is.

It's the cult like thinking. I used to call it the ADF (Apple Defense Force).
Another term for the phenomenon is RDF (Reality Distortion Field)

Some folks really get absorbed in the cult of personality around Apple and defend Apples choices, no matter the implications of those choices.

You're right. From what I read about Ive and his views on why he felt so demotivated and later left Apple, one of the main drivers was that the products became something where Cook and his gang of accountants were in control more than anyone. Another was "too many cooks in the kitchen".

They should eliminate the upcoming iPhone 17E and replace it with an iPhone 17 Mini because what’s the point of the regular iPhone 17 if competing with the E series? The Mini makes sense for a budget model. It will sell like crazy. 🤑
I want the Mini as a Pro model. That has never been made yet and I think it’s one of the main reasons the prior Minis didn’t sell so well. Personally I want a smaller phone without having to compromise on features.

All this weeping and wailing about a change from 6.1 to 6.3 in. That's literally 2/10 of an inch. Most people wouldn't even notice such a small difference.

So why bother doing it?

What if next it's 6.3 to 6.5?

6.5 to 6.7?

Is there any point where an additional small incremental increase in size will be of concern to you?

We've gone from 3.5" all the way up to 6.1" and now perhaps 6.3" as the smallest option.

(remains to be seen what the e line turns into or if it stays around)

You ≠ everyone
lol! Obviously not bro! Unfortunately Apple sees people like me as the vast majority. Listen I get your frustration I’m going through something similar in the video game world with the physical vs digital debate. I’m all for physical card/media only but guess what? The industry sees the digital fans to be the vast majority now and soon physical media will be a thing of the past. Of course it sucks.

You are probably right on the 0.2 inches in insolation. However, over several years, there are accumulative "small" increases over several years that add up over time, and before you know it, the smallest screen size is as big as "plus" or "max" size phones used to be. In a couple of years, the 6.3" size will probably be increased by another 0.2", rinse and repeat.

The Plus models have been a bigger failure than the Mini, that's why they are coming up with the "Air" Model. I am not saying don't make big phones, but why not release a Mini phone too?

For me Mini was the perfect size, fits in my hands, fits in my pocket, not too heavy.

I still don't get the hate Mini gets from the people who like huge phones. As I said release a Mini model every 3 years. If they can still make the iPad mini, then I am sure making an iPhone mini every 3 years will not be a problem.

The 16e has been a big failure too, other companies are trying to put the latest things in their new phones but the 16e does not has magsafe, it has a notch and it is big, why would I get the 16e when I could get the 15 or 16?

The iPhone fold moving for next year is predicted to have a 5.5 inch display when folded. If one wants a smaller phone, one simply doesn't have to unfold it. It will be a bit thicker, but it still might feel smaller in the hand. All one needs is $2000.

I really hate the base being larger...It may be popular with some, but it caused me not to buy an iPad since the 16 Pro was 'big enough' display size wise (vs. my iPhone SE).
Completely agree. I've always bought the smaller Pro version just to get the smallest phone they offer. However, with the latest one it's already too big to fit in the wireless charger in my car. It has a little slider you push your phone into to turn the power flow on, but now it's like .1 inch too tall to fit into it, so I can no longer wirelessly charge while in my car. Very annoying. I'm just so tired of big phones, I have an iPad pro, I have multiple macs with huge 30in+ screens. if I need a big screen for anything I have other devices, I want a small pocketable phone that's not intrusive.

My theory is they are making the phones bigger and bigger on purpose to piss people off, so when they release the crappy folding phone in a year or two, they will advertise it as smaller and pocketable, so it will force people over who have been asking for a smaller phone all this time. But I don't want a fragile, creased, plastic screen, so it's a hard no for me anyway.
