What’s up with all the hate?
Maybe not here, but social media is running its mouth.

I think this was one of the better years since the iPhone 13.

The regular iPhone is basically a Pro with upgraded storage at last years iPhone 16 price.

It has a
- „tripple“ 48MP camera system
- thin bezels with a slightly bigger screen
- ProMotion, finally
- an always on display
- 3000 nit max brightness (from 2000)
- new Ceramic Shield
- a new SoC as powerful as the M1
- considerably better battery life
- 18MP front camera with Center Stage and so on
- while being lighter than last years Pro and its available in more colors than the Pro was

AND CHEAPER
and the dual camera system looks better than the triple one IMO

If I was in the market for a new iPhone, this would be THE year.
Even the Pro is tempting.

What do you think about these years iPhones so far?
Reviews and first impressions are not really here yet, but judging by the keynote, is this year any good for you?

I’m calling it, this year will be considered one of the best in the future.
Together with the 13 and 11 years.

Storage is not upgraded. The 128 GB iPhone 16 Pro was $999, and the 256 GB iPhone 16 Pro was $1099. The iPhone 17 Pro starts at $1099. The cheaper option has just been eliminated. (Either you argue that storage has been upgraded and that the price has increased, or you argue that nothing has been changed except that the base model has been dropped.)

EDIT: Sorry, I see now that this was not about the Pro.

Of course.
You can not like the 17, or the Air, or the Pro.
But that doesn’t mean that this year wasn’t a big upgrade for each model.
The 17 is an incremental update, just like the 16 was. Nothing earth shattering. The giant leaps in tech are waiting on the next big thing. I will get the 17 PM this year as I update every year. The cost is worth it to me but each have to make their own decisions.

The base iPhone has been getting some good versions over the last few years. I think both the iPhone 15 and 16 were great base models that were value for money when compared to the Pros. The iPhone 17 takes this to a new level by giving you a larger, brighter, Promotion screen (and not a budget version that can only do 1-90 Hz or discrete 1 Hz, 60 Hz, 120 Hz). The fact that Apple tries to justify the increase Pro pricing by saying it's the same price as before but now starts with 256 GB storage, means that the iPhone 17 has actually had a price cut if you follow the logic.

Would I like a 4/8x telephoto lens, extra GPU core and faster CPU (due to more cache memory)? Sure, but it's not worth $300 more! At the back of my mind this is a slight concern that the 8 GB RAM could have consequences in future years, but there are plenty of web-based AI options if needed.

You just want to disagree don’t you.
Last years Pro for last years non-Pro price with entirely new features from this year.
It IS a big upgrade, even if we (should) take most of the features for granted by now. And luckily we can from now on.

Compare the iPhone 15, 16 and 17 on Apples website.
The 17 has brought a LOT more to the table than any non Pro did previously.

It's the internet. People complain. A lot. About everything. I think the biggest android fans look forward to Apple news more than most Apple fans, so they can spam complaints and try to troll Apple fans. This is nothing new. Almost every complaint needs to be taken with a grain of salt. Sure, plenty are genuine, but even those are from people that expect something unrealistic. I think the entire lineup was a good, reasonable step forward.

I think there is a good reason for this, as it is rumored that the non-pro phones will not be updated until March 2027. This year's non-pro still needs to feel fresh a year and half from now, when the iPhone 18 Pro has been out for six months.

Hmm. No 17E or 18E then?

It feels like the line up is never quite the same from year to year. It's strange that they can't seem to settle in on which models to offer each year.

IMO the new regular 17 is a great value. I'm sure it will lower the sale of the Pro's as this is the first time the regular model includes a lot the features that made them buy the Pro in the first place. It will be a big seller this year guaranteed.

$799 iPhone 17 is a very solid device in terms of value. The features speaks for themselves. ProMotion and 256GB.

$999 iPhone Air makes a number of big compromises and is priced too high. It’s in the middle, neither here nor there in terms of features.

$1,099 iPhone 17 Pro got an obvious price increase. Apple’s narrative was the storage was bumped, but the base 17 proves the price increase should have been $0. The 48MP sensors for all three lenses are impressive.

Agreed. All the 'boring' and 'nothing innovative' posts are ... boring

My upgrade decision is actually driven more by system slowdown (due to new iOS version) and battery or accident. Not apple intelligence, nor new UI.

Samsung is actually spreading this stuff and contributing directly. It's hilarious. They are always SO worried about what Apple is doing.

Can you keep waiting for innovation? iCan't. It's time to switch to Samsung.

Every new smartphone is "boring" these days. Even the novelty of foldables is wearing off (at least until Apple releases theirs). I don't know what people are expecting. It's never going to be like the late 2000s or early 2010s again. Smartphones have reached a plateau, like computers, where even one that's several years old can still basically do what a current one can.

I'm not saying this to complain or by cynical. I personally still get excited about new releases, but it is what it is.

i guess the hate for 17 is only there in US and other countries where the price differences of regular and pro variants are minimal.( or may be the pro user are not so happy that regular phone is offering almost equal features compared to their pro phone :D ) .
In many other countries , 17 will be massive hit (given the prices differences between the regular and the pro variant ). The 120 HZ with 6.3' (Same as 16 pro) is a killer move made by Apple.

Looking at the key note, i guess apple is mainly targeting on emerging markets in Asia like middle east, India etc where iphone face lot of competition with Android. Pretty sure 17 going to be the biggest selling product among iPhones this year with huge margin and its going to attract lot of potential new users in those countries.

But if you are fan of PRO iphones , you will be surely be disappointed this time

With regards to the thread title, its not that phones have gotten boring; its that users have far too high expectations. Phones are now normalised technology, on par with washing machines and vacuum cleaners in terms of utility and innovation. You can still get excited about household appliances: I recently upgraded to a cordless vac and its brilliant! But the tech news cycle isn't suppoosed to be a form of entertainment and phones are all boring but thats ok :) Sure you can make them bend and fold but a folding spoon is still just a spoon.

Reddit is big mad over this release 😂 I’m a Pro Max girl but I think all 3 phones are amazing this time around. If I didn’t rely heavily on 0.5x when I film skateboarding I’d “downgrade” and be super happy. But I’m also pretty hooked on the PM screen and battery size, so it’d be tough. But I don’t think any option this year is a bad choice. My partner is getting a lavender base 17 and I’m getting that fantastic orange Pro Max. I’m quite the maximalist and I love color so I’m thrilled to finally have something that’s not a shade of grey or tan!
