Well, it isn’t inherently “bad”. Pro has new heat pipe and thermal design so might be good for gamers. But for me it is a very incremental update.

For people coming from something like iPhone 7, 8 or even X it might be revolutionary, but for ones with later models it might be “meh” or even disappointing.

I had idea to do an upgrade ever since 15 Pro, but all of them seemed too basic for me. Classic “yes…but”.

For example devices have the same chip, right? Then why regular 17 has no 4K120 as Pro?. As well as I actually waited for 8k, not 4k120. So 17 records same framerate as my 11 Pro, maybe better clarity or bitrate, but essentially same framerate. Nighttime recording still looks too mushy and dark.

They all feel somewhat boring and “same”. I know if I buy 17 or 17 Pro I will not feel any joy for wasting that much money, because none of the features you listed are my favorites tbh, i.e. I can live without it.

Probably will be waiting for 18 because I don’t wanna feel underwhelmed by lack of features I need

It's the internet. People complain. A lot. About everything. I think the biggest android fans look forward to Apple news more than most Apple fans, so they can spam complaints and try to troll Apple fans. This is nothing new. Almost every complaint needs to be taken with a grain of salt. Sure, plenty are genuine, but even those are from people that expect something unrealistic. I think the entire lineup was a good, reasonable step forward.
I actually watched the keynote with my GF. We originally watched a movie, she went to the bathroom, the event was about to go live and I was like let’s see how she reacts.
She’s an android user, used to have OnePlus and OP Watch and now a Samsung Flip with a galaxy watch…
I mentioned the event days earlier and because of me she has another perspective on Apple since a year (been together for two).
We ended up watching the entire thing and she was pleasantly surprised what was announced.
She was actually the one showing me the online „hate“ because she herself was exited about this generation of iPhone and would have upgraded, but she is adamant about having certain software features still surprisingly lacking from iOS.
Otherwise Apple would have made a lot of money with her :D

Hmm. No 17E or 18E then?

It feels like the line up is never quite the same from year to year. It's strange that they can't seem to settle in on which models to offer each year.
Why would that be strange? The market is changing from year to year, so why shouldn't Apple react?

We see this post every year.
Just like the "it IS boring" posts. Only that this year, the base model is actually a very decent value and upgrade, for recent Apple standards.

Bro that’s literally what I made a post : Why people are upgrading
Sorry, I'm not keeping up with every thread here, especially after a keynote. Especially when the thread was speculative and posted prior to any official reveal. I actually didn't expect to be this exited before the event either.

Every new smartphone is "boring" these days. Even the novelty of foldables is wearing off (at least until Apple releases theirs). I don't know what people are expecting. It's never going to be like the late 2000s or early 2010s again. Smartphones have reached a plateau, like computers, where even one that's several years old can still basically do what a current one can.

I'm not saying this to complain or by cynical. I personally still get excited about new releases, but it is what it is.
I agree, but this is finally a plateau we can rest on. ProMotion and AOD have been mainstream features for a while, and apart from the (16)e they finally available for every model, just like 256GB and 48MP cameras.
Rewording it, this year is far les boring and underwhelming as previous years.

i guess the hate for 17 is only there in US and other countries where the price differences of regular and pro variants are minimal.( or may be the pro user are not so happy that regular phone is offering almost equal features compared to their pro phone :D ) .
In many other countries , 17 will be massive hit (given the prices differences between the regular and the pro variant ). The 120 HZ with 6.3' (Same as 16 pro) is a killer move made by Apple.

Looking at the key note, i guess apple is mainly targeting on emerging markets in Asia like middle east, India etc where iphone face lot of competition with Android. Pretty sure 17 going to be the biggest selling product among iPhones this year with huge margin and its going to attract lot of potential new users in those countries.

But if you are fan of PRO iphones , you will be surely be disappointed this time
Yeah the 17 is definitely the way to go for most people upgrading, starting with 14 Pro users because its considerably lighter (29g), more comfortable, has a bigger brighter screen, better battery life and USB C. Its gonna sell big.
Personally speaking, I'd be mad too if I had purchased a 16 Pro for full price in the last 8 months.
But that wouldn't matter to anyone but me, so

Reddit is big mad over this release 😂 I’m a Pro Max girl but I think all 3 phones are amazing this time around. If I didn’t rely heavily on 0.5x when I film skateboarding I’d “downgrade” and be super happy. But I’m also pretty hooked on the PM screen and battery size, so it’d be tough. But I don’t think any option this year is a bad choice. My partner is getting a lavender base 17 and I’m getting that fantastic orange Pro Max. I’m quite the maximalist and I love color so I’m thrilled to finally have something that’s not a shade of grey or tan!
The orange is surprisingly nice, having only looked at Apples own material. Definitely the color I'd get if I could cough up the 1300€ they are asking for in Germany o_O

Do you mind sharing what these are? (I'm just curious)
Universal back swipe, most notably, that works on both sides of the screen. Best yet, the way OnePlus does it. They have a normal back swipe to swipe between pages AND a swipe-and-hold action that switches between apps.
She, for the life of her, won't reach down to the bottom of the screen every time she wants to switch between apps, like we have to do with the Home Bar. This is actually a huge feature for people having trouble with their finger joints, like my mother with her 11 Pro, which is why she is using Assistive Touch as a Home Button...
Another feature is per app volume controls, which I NEED too.
I HATE listening to a voice message and then switching to any media app and getting blasted.

However, things like the Find My network network, AirDrop, the customizable Control Center, the Dynamic Island, AirPods Pro 2 (ease of use use and ANC compared to her OnePlus buds), the (almost) flawless integration between the phone, watch and Mac (she has a specced up 2019 MBP as a windows machine but started using macOS instead for numerous reasons) and Magsafe are all things she's greatly looking forward to.

Every new release isn't worth it to half the review you read. Literally every time. There really hasn't been any huge change or upgrade since they lost the home button. I mean not really.

Its all been incremental improvements, with trial and error on case design and durability. I don't think the 17 is an improvement on the design, and I don't like the pro losing the Ti case. I'm probably still going to get for a bit better battery life and nicer screen. I also really like the orange. Since I can trade up for $800 that also helps.

I have a 16 Pro Max so from everything I have seen, the 17 Pro Max was an incremental upgrade that was not worth me upgrading. I wasn't planning to anyway as my phone is still a great phone. This doesn't mean others may see it differently or are coming from older devices, but I don't think Apple expect people with 2024 iPhones to be clambering over themselves to get the 17's.

That's one strong and hard to defend take. If nothing else, you can not compare the front and the screens we have right now to the iPhone 7 or prior. The cameras have been great since the 7 but the screens... much bigger, muuuch brighter, muuuuuch better blacks, considerably higher resolution, Always On, ultra low possible brightness, 120Hz

Also, Face ID is far superior to Touch ID. I still have a Touch ID phone that i'll have to use soon while my 15 Pro gets repaired and I dread it already.

Samsung is actually spreading this stuff and contributing directly. It's hilarious. They are always SO worried about what Apple is doing.

Samsung constantly jab at Apple but will then proceed to copy their homework a few months later. I get it’s a competitive angle but it’s just kinda sad how they always rely on bigtalk when Apple’s design choices are cannibalising Samsung’s identity

What’s up with all the hate?
Maybe not here, but social media is running its mouth.

I think this was one of the better years since the iPhone 13.

The regular iPhone is basically a Pro with upgraded storage at last years iPhone 16 price.

It has a
- „tripple“ 48MP camera system
- thin bezels with a slightly bigger screen
- ProMotion, finally
- an always on display
- 3000 nit max brightness (from 2000)
- new Ceramic Shield
- a new SoC as powerful as the M1
- considerably better battery life
- 18MP front camera with Center Stage and so on
- while being lighter than last years Pro and its available in more colors than the Pro was

AND CHEAPER
and the dual camera system looks better than the triple one IMO

If I was in the market for a new iPhone, this would be THE year.
Even the Pro is tempting.

What do you think about these years iPhones so far?
Reviews and first impressions are not really here yet, but judging by the keynote, is this year any good for you?

I’m calling it, this year will be considered one of the best in the future.
Together with the 13 and 11 years.
All the new iPhones are spectacular devices as expected. The iPhone Air in particular shines with its titanium alloy and good color choices.

The only unfortunate thing is that Apple put such limited sh*t colors on their very best pro phones. WTF Apple, what's up with no dark civilized gray or black color for some of us adults? <Please do not anyone tell me to put an uber-tough modern iPhone Pro in a silly case.>

I first need to physically test the 17 PM, but will no doubt end up buying one (silver) for the camera competence upgrades. The aluminum oxide silver exterior will be a big cosmetic downgrade from the natural titanium exterior of the 16 PM.

Edit: Note that the orange is not a sh*t color, it is very nice for anyone who likes orange phones. It is the lack of color choice in the top end phones that sucks. Especially the lack of a base gray or black for those folks who do not want flashy phones.

I’m not sure if I’m keeping my 15 pro yet or changing it for a 17 or Air but the 17 will likely end up being my choice.

Agreed. Having less colour choice on the flagship range seems strange, especially when there’s a very bold orange which won’t appeal to all and no black.

I’ll also miss my natural titanium pro.

Well I have a 13 pro max. I am tempted by the iPhone Air, but am worried that the screen is significantly smaller. The thing is, my 13 works perfectly for my purposes. I'll go to the Apple Store and try out the Air and the 17 Pro Max. May upgrade if I really like one or the other. Since I don't use photos much, the newer iPhones are not as tempting as they are for others. If I don't feel the screen on the Air is too small, I will probably get it.

They know their customers. Samsung users are *seemingly* constantly motivated by how their device compares to what Apple offers. I get it, iPhones are everywhere and can seem a bit 'in your face', so confronting that with superior specs and/or abilities is understandable.

And they both borrow ideas from each other. I honestly don't think Samsung is all that serious with this stuff, it's just marketing. Google is doing it too.

The Air's screen is 6.5" (2736x1260px) , the 13 Pro Max's screen is 6.7" (2778x1284px).
I doubt you'll notice much of a difference.

I agree. The lack of black and grey for the Pro is strange. And the colors for the 17 aren’t the nicest either, unfortunately.
The orange is nice though, the dark blue not so much though.
Shame they parted with Product Red.

Even if/when Apple releases their foldable phone there will still be people saying it's a "boring upgrade" or complain about the cost, or say "Apple lacks innovation" and is years behind Samsung, or say they are going to wait for more substantial upgrades etc etc. For a site that is suppose to be Apple fans there sure are a lot of people waiting to take a crap on any and everything Apple does.

I’m very tempted as well. But I can’t really justify spending 950€ where I live for the improvements I would get. The main things I’m looking forward to when I eventually upgrade are 48MP on each back camera, the camera button to open the camera the moment I grab it (because I need the action button as the Ringer switch so I can take pictures in without the weird sounds or when taking screenshots in public), the brighter outdoors screen, the lower max brightness (although i’ve been using reduce whitepoint since my original SE so it’s just a matter or toggling a switch or running a shortcut right now), the (new and) better battery life, the slightly bigger screen with thinner bezels, the more efficient chip for non gaming (has 5 GPU cores like the 15 Pro), the front camera you dont have to turn sideways, and probably one or two other small improvements I might not notice at first.

But I will have to switch to a 2016 SE tomorrow, probably until Tuesday, because of dust on my 15 Pro camera, so that will give me a reality check :D

iPhone 17 will be the best phone till iPhone 18 and so on. I upgrade every 6 years or so. And I have never been disappointed. Upgrade from 7 plus to 13 PM was huge. I appreciate the incremental upgrades which add up every 2-3 years. It’s silly to say incremental upgrades are not good.

Foldable iPhone 18 coming 2026? Maybe I wait another year to upgrade my 12 pro max. I have to experience ProMotion display on my iPad Pro, since my 12 pro max doesn’t have it.
