iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max owners are having trouble with the speakers of their devices, and have complained about a static or hissing noise that occurs when the iPhone is charging.

There are multiple discussions about the issue on Reddit, the MacRumors forums, and Apple's Support Community, where affected users say there is a noticeable static noise "like an old radio." Some people report hearing it when playing audio and turning the volume down, while others say the static is audible without anything playing from the speakers. In some cases, there is a low crackle or a hiss when scrolling through webpages when the iPhone is charging, and some people hear the noise at low volumes even when the iPhone isn't on a charger.

Affected users report that the noise can be heard with chargers of all types, including Apple's official chargers. MagSafe charging causes the problem as well, but users report that the static noise is quieter. Unplugging the iPhone from the charger eliminates the sound for users who are experiencing the static noise when charging.

Some iPhone 17 Pro users have exchanged their devices for new ones, but have run into the same issue.

One Reddit user has been in contact with Apple support, and says the issue has been forwarded to Apple engineers. Apple is apparently working on a fix, but the iOS updates that have been released so far do not appear to solve the problem. The sound is subtle according to most reports, so it may be a widespread issue that only those sensitive to the noise have noticed.

No issues here with my day one 17 PM, though I only charge wirelessly. Even charging overnight next to my bed, it's 100% silent.

Are our devices getting too complex for their own good?

I recently experienced an issue of a sound being picked up by the mic when recording while my iPhone 13 Pro was on a magnetic 15W Qi charger. Haven't ever experienced that before with the non-magnetic 5W charging pads.

This is likely a hardware issue where software, or non-Apple apps, are bringing the problem to the forefront. If software does fix this, then it is a band-aid fix, and users are likely to lose 'something' somewhere else.

Had this sound since launch day with my 17 PM. The week after launch day I went to the Apple Store to get a replacement, but the sound was still there with the replacement device. The Apple Store geniuses were pretty clueless back then. I got used to it, but with iOS 26.2 it got slightly better somehow.

I wonder if there’s a difference in component sources between the ones experiencing the issue, and the ones not experiencing it.

I saw in another thread a theory that it’s happening due to lack of a type of coating on the aluminum, but I don’t know if that’s true or not. If only some units experience the issue, I wonder if it’s an issue with the speakers themselves.

Hm. I’ll have to check this tonight. Had my 17 Pro since December 22nd and haven’t noticed a thing. And my phone charges on USB-C overnight within half a foot of my noggin.

Of course, I also have a fan going as well as a bipap machine, sooooo…

Edit: just in case the info is useful, it’s a blue 256 GB model.

No issues with my 17 Pro Max ordered on day one. It’s totally silent while charging on a USB C cable… 👍🏻

Finally. Justice!

Every. Unit. Has. It.

The noise levels depending on the charging state, charging level, at the moment workload and whether it is wireless or wired.

We have ordered 20 units and all had it. It is emitted from the bottom speaker.

People who say they do not have it, might be in optimal circumstances or have bad hearing.

Because most media do not dare to call out Apple for this. Apple has been responding to complaints with 'its normal'.

None of the previous iPhones made these noises, not the competition.

Apple promotes this device as a pro video recording device. However if you connect the camera to a powerbank and start filming, the white noises is recorded within videos. Making all videos USELESS.

Even CNET noticed: https://www.cnet.com/tech/mobile/so...might-have-a-speaker-issue-and-weve-heard-it/

@MacRumors now write about the micro scratches and dents that come with ALL Macbook Pro units.
