If Apple can make the lenses flush with the bar that goes across the whole back it might be OK. But camera bumps on an already hugely protruding bump would just be stupid.

They just keep changing the model "signature" to make people buy it to show everybody that they have the latest model...
If I live in US no prob, I'll buy it every year because it's cheap upgrading, there's a lot of incentives and lack of tax over tax. But otherwise it's just stupid..

No, the pixel still has a camera bump, there would be nothing protruding the body of the phone in my suggestion, the phone would have a small flat section at the top, then from where your camera module currently ends on the existing phones the phone would go in at an angle to meet the bottom narrower edge. Almost a wedge shaped phone just flatted out where the cameras are.
Hide all the camera lens under a sleek black glass. No individual lens visible. All have the same cover. THAT would be sleek. Where the loudest part of the phone is the apple logo. Classic Apple Silver.
My money is on the follow reason. The lenses are getting bigger, and the bump would now be almost 3/4 of the way across, which would be ugly, so they just expanded the thing all the way across.
I don't like the looks of it, but maybe at least it will prevent the issue that the square in the corner causes - hopefully it will eliminate the wobble it has when it is laying on a flat surface and you touch the side that doesn't have the camera square.
It does look a little ugly however I feel it could be one of those situations where it looks bad in photos and is fine in the hand…?
I showed my wife the image and she said she liked it, she has a iPhone 13 Pro and said she plans on getting the 17 pro so I guess the design looks pleasing. I don’t mind it either.
Maybe one day the prism telephoto lens will be able to handle the whole zone range like a normal SLR camera with a zoom lens.
A larger, rectangle camera bump only makes sense if Apple increases the image sensor / lens size (which doesn’t appear to be the case in this mockup).

this and the Air have reinvigorated my interest in Apple.

The look of this one is obviously to prepare you for the subsequent foldable iPhone with a square-ish nature, so that you won't be too perturbed by how that one looks

I think we need to consider the back glass in all off this. I don't think those thin upper corners of the back glass will make it. If the phone is laid out like this, expect it to be all metal around the "camera bar" and glass below.
