Maybe apple thinks this will be a status symbol for Pro & Pro Max buyers? It will be easier for people to see you bought the high end product. lol ;):p:oops:

IMO, it doesn't look that bad, but will withhold final judgement until September.

The point of a camera bar is it at least keeps the phone from wobbling on a flat surface. This doesn't seem to do that?

Doesn’t look good at all, but to be honest I couldn’t name a current phone that I like design wise.
Thinking back to the Samsung galaxy S7 to S10 line, these have been beautiful devices.

I remember when this was the rumored iPhone 5 design.

Please MR stop posting artist renders. It’s not news or rumors and they rarely turn out to be right.

Boy, this just looks bizarre to me. Maybe there is some practical benefit to it, as it may give more space for other internal components near the top of the phone, like a better front-facing camera, a relocated Taptic engine giving more space for the battery, etc. – but design-wise, it's quite strange.

I think it might look better if it had the "color-infused glass" look like the current models, rather than being all-black.

I think this wou;d actually fix the wobble, since it spans the width of the phone, rather than just sitting in one corner.
That’s what I thought as well when I saw it the first time, but then from a different perspective, you can see the camera ring sitting on top of it all. Having said this, we know it’s a render.

I always remember hearing that Jonny Ive’s vision for the perfect iPhone was just a giant sheet of glass with no buttons, distractions, pure and simple.

Now look at the iPhone we’re probably going to end up with. A waste of space, tumor-like bar on the back, and the sides littered with gimmicky buttons.

I wish Apple would put a giant single lens in the back middle of the iPhone, which would sit flush and mechanically move, in and out to zoom, just like a traditional point and shoot camera. Have a lock button on one side and a single camera control-like button that can be customized to be used as whatever you like.

For example you could swipe on it elegantly to control the volume up and down, while you’re not using the camera or map the click for action button functions.

Think I’ll be looking for the standard iPhone 16 or something, that is ugly beyond belief…. Courage..

Three words I never thought I'd utter.

Bring - Back - Ive

This thing is an abomination. Zero elegance whatsoever. The rear looks like it was designed by the guy who brought you the Lenovo (IBM) think center.

(just don't let him dictate the z factor)

If this camera bar is being positioned as a premium feature, it has to be more than a design detail.

I'm guessing one of these:

A) The lenses are farther apart than what the rumour renderings show. This would enable widescreen photos and video and/or Spatial Photos and Video while holding the phone vertically.

B) There's a display on the bar. Having a distinct camera button makes it easier to trigger selfies with the back camera, now it just needs a display to position yourself in frame.

I think that the three cameras should be in a straight line across the width. One advantage would be the ability to record better spatial video as the two lenses would be further apart, like eyes.
It also would look so ugly either.
I agree with you, and I wonder if the only reason it's not in a straight line is to make sure the back of the phone isn't confused with Google Pixel?

I doubt they will keep the same orientation of the 3 cameras like it is now if they extend it to the side horizontally. It makes sense to just line them down each other that way. This just looks weird extending it for no reason if they keep the same 3 design look.

They should just extend the “bump” across the entire back, making the phone slightly thicker so they can add a bigger battery.
This.
Kake the phone thicker and flush on the back, give us 2-3 day battery and give us a phone that doesn't wobble in a table top...

Apple really took the eye sore that is the camera bump and found a way to make it even uglier...

Jony Ive would’ve never allow this. iPhones used to look so gorgeous, now they are thick bricks with a bunch of bumps on the back

#MakeCamerasFlushAgain
The last iPhone Jony worked on before leaving was the iPhone 11 series and the first iPhone with a bump was the 6 so I’m not following what you’re saying there. Unless I’m misinterpreting your comment.

Why are people saying it's not "Apple like" or "un-Apple"? That Apple is gone. The Jony Ive–era, or Steve Jobs–era, of design is gone. All of Jony Ive's design team left and join his firm. This is what the new designers are coming up with. Remember that they also gave customers the new Mac mini design and MacBook Pro design.

I kind of like it.

Not to mention it should eliminate the “wobbles” that many don’t like.

Looks very good. Not sure whether the camera island will be made of out glass or whether it will be like the iPad Pro. Hopefully this year's Pro models will have some nice colour options. A red one will be good.
