After doing some of my own research I stand corrected. It does appear to be a machined titanium band/shell, diffusion bonded to the aluminum.
If the titanium is 1 mm thick, it obviously plays a structural role rather than being just a cosmetic coating, whether it’s bonded to aluminium or not.

I would suggest waiting for actual reviews then. Rumoured specs could very well match the actual release specs, or they may be a bit different, but neither are real world results. Since you’re talking about making decisions on actual products, I think it would be a mistake to choose the 16 series 5X just because of paper specs, considering that 5X camera is 2 years old now, as it made its debut in 2023 with the 15 Pro Max. The rumoured 3.5X for the 17 Pro series is supposed to get not only 48 MP, but also a larger sensor size.

I wouldn’t be surprised if the results from a 7X zoom option could actually be quite reasonable in comparison to the older 5X, at least in daytime lighting. Remember, the 5X quality in the 16 Pro isn’t actually rated that well compared to the prior 3X in the 15 Pro, and the 5X is also criticized for making portrait shots more awkward.
I understand all of that, but, again, the 7x is not zoom, it is 3.5x zoom and then a crop. Optically it remains at 3.5.
But whatever, I will see what Apple announces and then make decisions, I'm not in a hurry

While true, I suspect it will be slightly better than the current 5× zoom, because of a combination of a larger sensor and more pixels. That combo could (and in my guess will) produce better detail and less noise – all the good stuff.

(And I’d guess the 7× performance will be slightly worse than the current 5× – but why would you compare that?)

I just want a phone that will lay flat on a table. Get rid of the huge camera bump. Yet it keeps getting larger. I could care less about the camera lens tech.

The rumoured 17 Pro Max 3.5X would undoubtedly be a bit better at full resolution than the iPhone 15/16 Pro Max 5X at full resolution for the reasons you cite, plus the fact there will be less motion blur, and because it would get a newer SoC with new computational photography engine. BTW, I'd probably leave it set for 24 MP pictures, not 12 MP.

However, what I was saying is that because the 5X is 2 years old now, I wouldn't be surprised if the new cropped 7X quality got relatively close to the old 5X in daytime lighting. The 7X would likely do worse in low lighting though, despite the other technology improvements.

Siting moving the apple logo is a feature was all I needed to stick with my 16PM possibly until the 19PM or Apple iPhone XXPM comes out.

Nobody wants Touch ID.
Incorrect. I refuse to update off my iPhone SE 2022 edition because of Touch ID. I prefer modern biometric fingerprint readers over facial recognition, no matter how advanced. The ease of use is higher (I can unlock in my pocket if I want to unlock my watch, for example), the likelihood of malicious or forced use is lower (harder to force an unknown specific finger as opposed to your whole face), and is less of a distraction to unlock if I want to discreetly read a text message quickly (in a work meeting for example)... I could go on, but we get the point.

My reasons are subjective and probably debatable for many and I'm not looking to start that again... but rest assured there is a solid number of Apple owners that want nothing to do with Face ID.

I'd always kind of hoped we'd get to "both" being an option on device (maybe just on Pro lines I guess?).

They are of subjective preferential appeal depending upon user and context, IME.

Both being present would be fine as long as the user got to choose which they prefer. In some cases, such as banking apps or other high-risk usage, being able to require both Face AND Touch ID would be best (again allow it to be optional).

But the lack of Touch ID at all is my security deal-breaker. Thank goodness they placed it on the power button on a lot of the iPads. Not sure why that isn't an option on the phones aside from their obsession with making the phones as paper thin as possible; another change I don't care about and wonder how these new 2025 phones will sustain the "bend test". Sure, the iPhone SE is based off the ancient iPhone 8 frame, but it's small enough to fit a carpenter's pocket and solid enough to resist bending while there. If I could get all the new bells and whistles of the iPhones with the dimensions of the SE and a touch ID power button I wouldn't be able to give Apple my money fast enough.

That's an interesting thought. I agree with you.
For high security Apps, I'd love to have that "combo" requirement.

Yep - I'm right there with you.

I prefer Touch ID over Face ID for an iPhone. However, I’ve gotten used to Face ID so it’s not a deal killer for me.

However, I prefer Face ID over Touch ID for an iPad, because of my different usage pattern.
