That looks so bizarre, and yet sort of coolOppo had a couple of models with popup camera, for example https://www.gsmarena.com/oppo_reno2_z-pictures-9809.php.
But are the webcams in those Windows laptops any better?every window laptop has tiny bezels with webcams in them, the macbook webcam is so bad
They're working on it. I suspect metalens technology isn't good enough yet to replace the rear camera lenses, where performance requirements are much higher than those for the much simpler Face ID.Metalens technology could make the giganormous camera bump disappear
Lots of people do, including many in all the MacRumors forums discussing it, like this one.I have never met anyone who talked about a "notch" or "dynamic island" as a detriment. EVER
That would imply a camera...I want a Dynamic Island on my Apple Watch Ultra
Or just Face ID.That would imply a camera...![]()
From what I understand, metalenses work best at a single frequency of light. When you try to use it for a full spectrum image, the different frequencies are refracted at different angles and the image is distorted. The "features" described here represent very incremental "progress" IMO.
Metalens technology could make the giganormous camera bump disappear; this would be real progress.
Instead, they will shrink the useless "dynamic island", blah blah blah, but the iPhone 17 does not seem to be significantly different from iPhones released years and years ago.
Why would people with a 15 or 16 be ready to upgrade so soon? More and more people are waiting longer to upgrade. If you have an older phone, then the new phone becomes more appealing. Phones are a very mature technology without a lot of need for new features. Even the areas of need, like underscreen cameras and sensors are not technically feasible yet. The result is a slow, incremental upgrade process. It’s not like other phone makers are bringing out significantly different phones, either. So what is honestly the point of this phone? It doesn't really bring anything "must-have" to the table for owners of the 16 or even 15 Pro Max. Why is Apple so content with such minor updates on their flagship device?
Here's what ChatGPT says about that:From what I understand, metalenses work best at a single frequency of light. When you try to use it for a full spectrum image, the different frequencies are refracted at different angles and the image is distorted.
Thanks for the updateHere's what ChatGPT says about that:
Researchers have developed “achromatic metalenses” that work across multiple wavelengths.
By designing meta-structures with varying heights, shapes, and arrangements, engineers can create metalenses that bend multiple wavelengths to the same focal point.
Recent advances in multi-layered metasurfaces and dispersion engineering have allowed for broadband metalenses capable of full-spectrum imaging.
There isn’t really a need for the bezel cutout in the iPad as it needs more bezel space for holding the device. The software features of Dynamic Island are aimed at providing better access to multitasking on a small screen. The iPad has less need for that with the larger screen and other multitasking features, such as slide over and split screen.Expecting it to reduce only on the Pro Max this year and the Pro should get it next year. Not sure whether a dynamic island will ever come to iPad Pro
Same here. I prefer the notch. The smaller notch on the iPhone 13 was less intrusive to the overall display than the Dynamic Island. Im yet to see real value on a Daily Basis from Dynamic Island. Maybe the app developers need to step up or Apple needs to provide some incentives for innovation around this feature.I really dislike the Dynamic Island. It's up there with 3D Touch IMO. I know some people liked 3D Touch, but I thought it was basically a solution looking for a problem. Same goes for Dynamic Island. I'm happy Apple ditched 3D Touch after a while.
