Worth remembering that Corning gets a *lot* of R&D funding from Apple. It’s unlikely Apple didnt have access to the tech, so there’s likely valid reasons (maybe involving scale or yield?) that made Apple the follower not the leader in this case, not sloth
That's not how Apple works. Apple skates to where the puck will be, seeking not to be the first, but to be the best. You can rest assured that if Apple includes anti-reflective, anti-scratch screens on the flagship iPhone Pros, the screens will truly be a game-changer on their best-in-class displays. Apple thinks you're gonna love it!

Comme on, Apple : antireflective screen is not a pro feature - Our eyes should have it as soon as the technology is availaible. It’s a question of health, not only confort

Apple is a tiny startup on the bleeding edge, with limited resources. At the very last minute, they discovered the antireflective coating on the best-in-class Retina displays on the non-pro iPhone 17 series just wasn't quite ready to be a game changer that delighted customers. So, they had to pull this feature as they were literally about to mass produce the displays, to ensure it meets the "not the first, but the best" standard Apple requires. Not to worry, though, because now there is a clear upgrade path for the non-pro iPhone series, ensuring breakthrough updates and strong profits for years to come!

In general yes, Apple typically isnt the first to enter a market, they prefer to enter later with something more refined than the competitors. In this case though a lot of Corning’s advances in glass for phones has been funded by Apple, my bet would be there are actual hard reasons beyond just “we dont want to be first”

Apple has never said they don't want to be first. They seek to be the best. That sometimes means they are the first, as with the original iPhone. In the current situation, the anti-reflective coating just wasn't quite ready to be a game-changer that truly delighted customers until now. This will be the BEST iPhone screen ever released in an iPhone.

Only Samsung have it now and that’s on ultra

This would be cool. Having used the nano-texture display, I think anti-reflective displays work much better for mobile devices like MacBooks and iPhones than stationary ones like a Pro Display.

Will this mean screen protectors are a thing of the past?

I have generally hated screen protectors, but I got one for my wife (who needs one because her earrings scratch the glass constantly) and then tried installing on my own phone because I usually drop my phone a few times a year and thought it was cheap insurance. (Modern iPhone screens are pretty tough and it's been YEARS since I broke a screen - probably iPhone 6S)

Thing is... even though I don't like the look, even the cheapo Amazon screen protectors are much more resistant to fingerprints and smudges than Apple's displays. For this reason alone I use a screen protector on my iPhone and now my iPads as well. If they could fix the fingerprint issue - I'd happily forgo the SP.

I had the S24U for a bit, and I LOVED that anti-reflective glass, but one thing I did not like was how easily it would get greasy and smudgy so fast, where my other phones would not get so yucky nearly as fast or bad. That anti-reflective glass would get nasty in like a couple hours of use, my other phones wouldn't nasty for an entire day.
