Something about that render reminds me of this and I cannot abide it (my opinion only). What is it with these retro modern designs. I am getting too old. 😉

My 16Pro should have come with 12GB since Apple has been promoting it as the first iPhone designed for Apple Intelligence. Of maybe it's the 17 that will be the first phone to have fully functional Apple Intelligence.
This right here is a legit question.

After the Apple Intelligence discussion last week, I wondered the same. Is it a software issue and/or hardware issue? Rumor of 17Pro having 12GB RAM sure makes it look like the 16 Pro may not have enough RAM to support the advertised features when the 16 Pro was announced. Very frustrating.

I wonder if there’s a technical reason for that big camera bar on top, like they need more room for a new sensor to accommodate the new telephoto camera.

Make a better phone. We don't really care about the camera as much as they think. Because it seems that is all they ever really improve.
Nr1 selling point beside the outer appearance for the vast majority of people.

I would purchase the 17 if the only significant upgrade is the 2nm-process chip. If it has an increased 12 gb of ram plus if Apple puts out an Ultra device, that would just be the icing on the cake.

bigger sensor or an optical zoom? who knows, but there has to be something.

The RAM upgrade will be nice. The cameras being a bit better will be cool too but I really don’t care about all that anymore since the cameras have been good enough for a while now.

What I’m looking for is for the phone to run cool and efficiently and have a great battery life.

Spot on. I doubt the vast majority of iPhone owners even bother to look at photos they take with their phones on something other than their phones or tablets. Fewer still might see them on their computer. Fewer than that will print the photos. Fewer still might use the phone as part of a serious photography workflow. A 48MP photo viewed on an iPad might as well be 12MP for the vast majority of users.
I print my photos 21x28 and they are stunning, sure there are a few pictures here and there where the eyes could be a bit sharper but 9/10 times they are super sharp, I almost always use the main sensor only cus of the 48 mp (14 pro max) but even the ultra wide is extremely good! Also, the 12mp looks very good once printed, I don’t know how much the 48mp improves but I bet it’s not that much ? A little more details here and there I guess but 48mp imo is more important when you want to crop your pictures

Well I just got the 16 pro last year so I'm good to go for a few years. It would be sort of fun shutting my eyes to each year's model until they add up enough in a few years to be worth upgrading but I just can't help taking a peek.

What makes a better phone?

A better screen than the best one on the market? A better operating system than the best? A better app store than the best one? Better silicon than the best silicon? Better build quality, better chassis, better material, better quality control, better support than the best one?

In every single parameter Apple is leading by a wide margin, and in almost every parameter, they are improving year over year. Camera is just the most important and most visible one of those parameters.

I feel like what you're asking for is a folding phone. I don't see what else you may be currently missing in an iPhone.

Only 2 years ago 8gb of ram was enough for a computer. 🥲

Apple is a very giving company!!!!!!

This is all going to be useless though if they don't implement page file support. The way iOS is designed it could have 64GB of RAM and apps would still reload every time I switch away.

In not so many words you’re effectively suggesting the telephoto’s quality isn’t great. And I would agree, the telephoto needs improvement. The 17 Pro/Max will try to partially address that.

I personally want to see continued incremental improvements in the camera quality, but especially so for the telephoto.

Time for Apple to go back to improving the iPhone instead of working on projects that never come to fruition
Time to seriously improve the iPhone not just the camera

That's great. But you've missed the point entirely. They push the camera improvements in the phone release each year because there aren't seemingly enough other areas for innovation. Mostly because of Cook's lack of vision and their poor software development team. When they tout how great the camera improvements are, the minimally iterative improvements are meant to distract you from the fact that from the 13 to the 14 to 15 to the 16, you are essentially buying the same device. The 17 is likely going to follow suit.
What are you expecting though? Looking at what is in a phone—computer chip with storage, charging/data IO, display, biometrics, radios, speaker, mic, and cameras—what in there do they not improve that you want improved? Or what do you want added? (The catch is that the changes have to be technically feasible and not make the overall UX worse, which may not be something we laypeople can foresee.)
For me, the camera is by and far the only thing I really want improved. Everything else is fine, although they do make improvements on those too.

It looks like the Xiaomi 11 Ultra… while Xiaomi is already on 15 Ultra now..
If they added that little display at least it would make sense to have that huge camera island/bar. But I doubt Apple will add it.

I think you're maybe speaking for yourself or a very small minority of people. The camera is an important feature to a huge number of people out there.

When people are wanting a phone recommendation, the first question I ask is "iOS or Android", then the next one is "how important is the camera?". A lot of people absolutely do factor the camera into their purchase decision.
I don’t know the percentages but I’m one of those people who doesn’t care about the camera.

The only reason I bumped my wife's 12PM to the 16PM was for the camera updates. Since I don't care about taking photos my 12PM is working just fine with the latest iOS (albeit missing many iOS 18 tentpole features).

The question should be do you have or use a mac and or ipad already ? becuase if they answer yes then iphone is almost always the right answer regardless of any other question. If people are asking what phone chances are they don't even know what ios vs android is.

I'm convinced 90% of the arguments about ios or android phones come down to whether the person already has a mac or a pc (which is never usually revealed) . If they have PC it makes it hard to descearn any value from an iphone vs android. If they already use apple stuff then iphone is nigh on essential for harmony.

The camera upgrades are seeing diminishing returns. Convenience aside, I have better cameras. But I'm always frustrated when my IPXXPro often exhibits poorer phone or data function than others' phones around me.

If they do launch an Ultra version will that simply be a Pro Max rebranded or an entirely new device?
