It seems that the color on the CS is a coating on top, instead of being infused into the glass as previously, and thus that Apple has opted for a more shatter-resistant material at the cost of being more prone to scratches and marks.

Well my ceramic cooktop is infused black or at least has a black substrate that shows through, can take a beating from heavy pots and pans, and doesn't have a scratch on it after two years of use. If what you say is true, it seems like quite the terrible design choice. Paint your nearly indestructible CS in an area that will be magnetically attached to many hard objects, Apple's own MagSafe puck likely being one of them. Not to mention the heat wear from day to day charging. "Just slap a case on it" I hear people say but I've never needed to with my 15PM while charging and it's "inferior" tinted glass rear doesn't have a scratch on it. Speaking of, that's definitely the phone I'll be sticking with this year 👍

Based on the responses, extensive media reports, and from going to the Apple Store to see the demo units in person, it does look like there are a series of different issues.

1. Poor PVP coating on the rear iPhone Air panel.
2. Aluminum anodizing process that is not hardening the aluminum enough.
3. Ceramic shield rear panel on the Pros being too easy to scratch.

Also this article had a great shot of scratches on the rear ceramic shield area on an orange Pro, showing that it’s not just certain colors having issues.

You cherry-picked one line from my post. I immediately acknowledge that in the next sentence. It's wild how defensive folks seem to be when it comes to the new Pro phones in particular. I also went on to say that: "I'm now interested in facts about their Ceramic Shield and what that jargon even really means," which I am. I could honestly care less about aluminum anodization industry standards. I'm sure the Pros are more or less fine when it comes to the durability of their main body but, as of now and based on what I've seen in person, not so much on Ceramic Shield as a rear MagSafe charging area replacement for the tinted glass they've used for years. I get that they likely switched to reduce cracked glass warranty claims. But it's looking like their execution may warrant a closer look.

Th obsession over scratches with different colors happens every year with the vocal minority. There has yet to be a legitimate manufacturing defect with the anodizing process.

The MagSafe products have produced rings and the like since they were first introduced. Again, that doesn't show a manufacturing defect with the color itself.

Go watch Jerryrigeverything on YouTube and he’ll explain it to you. Maybe then you can stop defending a multiple trillion dollar company like it’s your favourite football team because it’s decided to cut corners.

The phone is legitimately taking damage INSIDE cases... the Aluminum unibody is a problem and people should be allowed to voice this frustration.

Let's all take a second to recognize that we are not Apple executives and it does us 0 benefit to defend the company we have made trillions of dollars. As a pro user, durability is important to me. I've gone caseless every single year from 12pro to 16 pro without a single crack.

17 pro, fine I guess I have to use a case and can't be so confident rocking it naked. But the fact that it's even taking damage with a case on? That's insane.

If my phone gets dented with a case on, I am smashing that **** and getting a replacement. Apple will bleed in AppleCare replacements and they'll have to address it after a generation or two.

The glass has not cracked on me in 5 years. Idc how strong the new screen is if the body is warping lmfao.

I wish this were true, and it's what I assumed before I went to the Apple Store today. Almost every ceramic back panel of every model 17 had at least MagSafe charger ring scuffs if not visible scratches from being removed and placed back on their chargers. None of it outwardly appeared to be purposeful damage, ie customers testing the phones' durability. As has been mentioned, the darker models (blue PM, black Air) appeared to be the worse for wear but there were marks on most others, including the lighter shades of Airs. From what I saw, this seems like a Ceramic Shield issue specific to the rear panels only. I did not notice any scratches on the aluminum frames of the 17 pros, just a little discoloration on the antenna bands beneath the camera plateaus where they were coming into contact with the top of the chargers as folks slid them back on. Chalk it up to a bad batch maybe? In any case, how these got past QC is beyond me.

What has me paranoid is the exposed area around the camera bump. Most cases leave the unprotected. Feels like that will look awful after being in a box or setting the phone down repeatedly during normal use.

I wouldn't call BS on it, I spotted the same thing at the Stonestown Apple Store in San Francisco. They were all scratched up on the rear glass...Air, Pro, Pro Max...in every color too.

I have just been to the Apple Store in Singapore and there were definitely scratches on the darker colours. But none are on the aluminium itself, just the back glass material used on the back section. All the light colours looked fine also.
