This makes sense. Also why most of the scratch comments/pictures are about phones at Apple stores. Though I’m a little surprised Apple didn’t fund another way to display the phones that wouldn’t scratch the backs. Unless there isn’t any way to prevent it.
I would not be surprised if we start to see redesigned display stands where the MagSafe pucks are entirely coated in rubber start appearing in stores over the next few weeks.

I think i'm going to have to look for a clear skin for it, but I doubt any will take into account the curvature of that ridge of the plateau. I've seen plenty of separate skin components, that plateau shape will be the issue. Seems like a huge flaw for a four figure phone-maybe they'll be sympathetic to scratches and damage at trade in time, like they were this year. Perhaps they were already counting on it...

I've had skins on phones before, so I don't mind, just would be nice to not have that little nugget of doubt in the back of mind and the need to check it every time i get it out of my pocket or case!

I think this will come a few days later... Scratching will happen faster, than denting. But for sure this will also come up.
I forget which 'influencer' it was, but I had a post come up in my Instagram feed Monday, where he was showing the phone bent along one of the long edges after a drop. Other side was perfect. No damage to the phone in the way of scratches or anything though, which made me question it. May have been in a case when he dropped it, not sure.

The phone is legitimately taking damage INSIDE cases... the Aluminum unibody is a problem and people should be allowed to voice this frustration.

Let's all take a second to recognize that we are not Apple executives and it does us 0 benefit to defend the company we have made trillions of dollars. As a pro user, durability is important to me. I've gone caseless every single year from 12pro to 16 pro without a single crack.

17 pro, fine I guess I have to use a case and can't be so confident rocking it naked. But the fact that it's even taking damage with a case on? That's insane.

If my phone gets dented with a case on, I am smashing that **** and getting a replacement. Apple will bleed in AppleCare replacements and they'll have to address it after a generation or two.

The glass has not cracked on me in 5 years. Idc how strong the new screen is if the body is warping lmfao.
A phone still getting damage from a drop while in a case is certainly not new. The picture doesn't show anything out of the ordinary, in my opinion.

The Ceramic Shield on the Pros already shows scratches, along with scuffs on the aluminum, while the Airs have scuffs on the Ceramic Shield as well. It seems like the trade-off is that the more shatter-resistant the glass becomes, the more prone it is to scratches.
Ceramic Shield is about better protecting the device against breaking. The device can't be scratch-proof and shatter-proof at the same time.

Scratchgate is only real for the foolish people that want to “flex” and have AppleCare+ attitude. Screen protector and case, you will be fine.
I agree with a screen protector and a case. I've had AC+ on my 15PM and now this 17PM, so the option is there to rock it naked if I want-I like that security. I like how different the phone feels out of a case, but I wouldn't go caseless without AC+, I'm too clumsy!

Phones get damaged inside cases even without being dropped. My 16 pro Max which have been in a very tight fitting Benks ceramic case had all sorts of permanent marks on the side rails from dust and debris that had found its way into the case and yes, I did take the phone out of the case every month or so to clean the case.

Very true. I forgot about that aspect.

Think hard to fit shin that wouldn’t crease around the plateau to be able to cover. Will be hard to not accept some scratches and dents knowing what the put out.

Unfortunate but not unusual to get damaged whilst dropped in a case.

This was my 15 Pro last year, the frame got scuffed in a drop whilst in an apple silicone case.

Say what you may, but the reason I (personally) buy a good phone is to interact with it. Not to interact with a case so that it is preserved for another owner (who will also slap a case on). Never used cases and never had any major issues that would warrant to change that, but it’s safe to say I’m gonna skip 17Pro…

Not sure what you are talking about. Pro price just should not come with aluminium, just little bit better than plastic.
What I am talking about is your previous created threads where you complained about the Air before it was even released. Hence my comment, you never planned to buy any of the new devices regardless of what it was made from. Aluminium only a bit better than plastic? You realise cars are made from aluminium right?! And Aircraft. And buildings.

This is inaccurate. I stopped into the Apple Store at Mall of America Friday afternoon and there were indeed scuffs/ scratches already on the display units of the Pro devices. You're an outlier here if you truly didn't see any scuffs/ scratches on them because everyone I touched had them
It's not. There's a difference between the phone scratching, and the phone literally scratching material off of something else and leaving material on it. Every single phone I've seen in a store with a "scratch" rubbed out. People are clowns, and come here to complain/make crap up. It's fairly easy to see who they are.

My comments for Air come true even after it is released. It does have overheat, cpu easily locked speed because of heat issue. Is it really that strong that even sit on it wouldn’t break? Time will tell.

Since Air is so easily get warm or heated up even just daily normal usage like web browsing base on real user comments, the battery health would go down much faster. No surprise Apple makes a crazy expensive external battery to earn much more because they know the users will need it very soon. New battery is always the best, but after half year, one year is another story.

I actually think this entire episode is fascinating and is signaling some info about what could be going on inside Apple internally.

As Apple is saying that the magsafe in store stands are the cause of the devices being scratched.

But even if this is 100% true and the real issue, it basically means they didn’t extensively test these new iPhones on the retail store stands at all before release. This is bizarre taken at face value as reports of the scratches started to show up China immediately on release day. And I went to the Apple Store near me at the end of release day and saw all of the scratched devices myself.

This also doesn't account for the dents showing up on the Pros from basic drops and even dents happing after being dropped in cases.

Ultimately, Apple is admitting that they didn't test these iPhones enough one way or the other.

Personally I do think something is going on in regard to the desire to cheapen the iPhone materials due to tariffs and rising costs.

Another contributing factor could be adding newer factories in India to make iPhones and struggling to QA everything in the tight release timelines.
