Lol it is so inconvenient to toggle, I remember how easy this option was to use on Galaxy S10+ (2019).

Did they actually use same icon as they use for picture in picture mode but for this mode?? Plain stupidity.

Thought there were no use cases for me to have that feature, but it is certainly nice to hear iPhones have realized they can implement it too after more than 7 years of this feature being present in competitor offerings, as well as much better implementations, not this weird “picture in picture” icon

My friend used to get every new Galaxy every year and I remember when she was able to do this, and even add a picture frame around the little selfie cutout if I’m remembering correctly. This was probably 2015-2017ish.

Ironically, iPhone 17 Pro is the first time she’s ever switched to Apple haha maybe this is the feature that’s been holding some people back

I haven’t personally used Rode Capture nor DoubleTake. I do live in the same household as someone who has used both, and received their feedback. And I’ve read the online reviews for both. Neither seems to be doing a great job with requires to stability. DoubleTake hasn’t been updated in six months; Rode Capture at least is still being actively maintained. One would hope that Apple could do better on the stability point, but time will tell.

Also, DoubleTake appears to require a subscription, at least for some functions.

Finally, I reviewed each app’s privacy policy. I’m not thrilled. I think the majority of users out there don’t really care about privacy—not really. But some do, and I’m one of them. Each policy is very clearly tailored to allow the company to make the most of any data or information they collect from you, and explicitly state certain data is required for full function and service. And such data can be used by the company in pursuit of general commercial interests. I’m not saying this is different than a lot of companies these days—even large companies such as Microsoft and Adobe. But I’m not a fan.

I wish the videos were non-destructive, in a way that you can reposition the selfie PiP later on when you edit the video (and resize it maybe). Perhaps that's something we will see in the future...
great idea ⭐

Useless for interview recordings to edit later; I thought this is a “Pro” phone.

This feature was already available via 3rd party apps. Not sure why Apple doesn't make it available natively on the iPhone 16 Pro? After all, Apple kind of owes those of us who bought the 16 Pro and didn't get all the AI features that were supposedly coming with it.

There's no valid reason why this is for the 17 lineup only. Apple has a history of this, but most of the time there's at least some reason why it's the new generation only. This? Absolutely a feature older models are capable of. It really goes to show how they're struggling more and more to differentiate new models from the prior generation(s). This is the first generation, ever, that I have decided to not upgrade to the new model.

Modest CPU increases. Why not supported in some older devices, lien 15 pro?, even when 3rd party apps can do it.
Plus even middle range androids support it with lesser cpus. Aten Apple processors super powerful?, or just the current year is good and the previous years CPU’s become not-worthy?

Reaction videos? Ah, more cringy exaggerated performative drama, just what the world needed...

I suppose conversational narrated videos, like if you're doing a video 'walk through' of your new home to send to your parents (who live way off and can't visit) where your 'talking head' is considered an aesthetic plus could be nice. Similarly, influencers who want their face in the content to promote their brand recognition may like this. So there are some 'not so cringy' practical uses.

Some features just aren't for everyone.

Understand & know this is new, but anyone know why it’s limited to the 17 series? Must be hardware requirements.
This is a feature locked out by software. This is what happens when Apple can’t innovate, they lock out features.

Double Take iOS app came out almost 6 years ago and it's not limited to iPhones 17 😂

I imagine it's an arbitrary limitation. I doubt it's anything to do with the devices power. You can achieve the same thing with a 3rd party app, and far weaker Android devices have had this feature for years.

Oh wow that’s amazing!

Oh hang on, my hair didn’t quite look right when I said that. Can you tell me about this new PiP feature again.

This was supposed to be a feature on iPhone 11 that never materialized.

Apple first demonstrated the iPhone's multiple camera recording ability in
September 2019 at the iPhone 11 event, showcasing the technology with a demo from FiLMiC. Later, on January 28, 2020, FiLMiC released the technology as a standalone, free app called DoubleTake to allow users to record from two cameras simultaneously. This feature was made possible by new iOS 13 APIs and was initially available on the iPhone 11 and 11 Pro models, with plans to integrate it into the main FiLMiC Pro app later.

I'm honestly surprised to hear that it's destructive, especially considering how aggressively Apple has been trying to make their video camera something really pro-level.

I get that normies might be confused why it was saved as two separate videos, but a toggle to switch between destructive and non-destructive seems obvious.

It's too bad that it's not. Would have been nice to have the clean feeds to work with separately when needed.

I was wondering what this was supposed to be used for. Apple’s example of a mom recording herself while watching her kid’s basketball game seemed kind of silly. Seems a bit vain to insert a persistent video of your head into a video about your kid.

Also, when I’m recording video, I’m usually too focused on trying to keep the picture steady and keep all the important stuff in-frame to also have to put on my social face for being recorded myself.

Exactly... It should be non-destructive in a way that it allows resizing the PiP, repositioning the PiP, and disabling it altogether...
