I would be curious if Apple will respond in any way to these durability concerns for the iPhone 17 Pro/Pro Max. I'm still not sure myself if they are overblown or real. But there is definitely a widespread public perception that there is a durability issue with this phone that wasn't there before, and Apple marketed these phones as being MORE durable (ceramic shield etc) so I feel like they're going to want to respond to that in some way. The same way they responded to iPhone 6 plus bendgate. Could bending be avoided by simply not sitting on your phone? Of course. But Apple still updated the 6s to make sure that concern was addressed for consumers. I expect to see a similar adjustment here.
yeah the dents i’ve seen are super weird. some of the dents i’ve seen online look like play dough.

i can attest to the softness of my 17 Pro Max. Literally was putting my phone down and it slipped less than an inch on to a granite table. resulted in two minuscule dents. I was shocked that such a light tap would cause this.

my biggest disappointment in a new phone by far in a long time. had i not gotten a good deal on trading in my 16PM, i would have stayed on the 16PM for a long while

Nope, that would be the phone you’ve just purchased. The 17 has really been an ‘S’ year.
Redesign
New telephoto
Anti reflective coating
New screen (unlike many years where screen is the same as last year)
Much bigger batteries for US users (not for me sadly)
No PWM
Vapor chamber - huge
40%+ GPU increase

We need to stop calling purely visual changes "features."

Does a translucent MagSafe area sound neat? Yes absolutely. Does it add or change functionality? No not at all. It's a visual change - not a feature.

A feature is something that can be used - Camera Control is a feature, FaceID is a feature, ProMotion is a feature, telephoto camera is a feature.

I would be totally ok with a heavier iPhone that is flat on the back.
After using nearly every model, my preference is most certainly a flat back.

Currently my secondary iPhone is the 16e. Completely flat with just a minor trim ring around the camera lens, it’s ideal. Small compact and feather light.

Using the Apple Silicone case it makes the back flush, completely flat so not even the camera bezel protrudes. Without rocking when lying flat on the table it’s also very easy to slip in and out of one’s pocket.

I’m enjoying this simple basic iPhone immensely. It’s a nice alternative to my Monday through Friday iPhone 16 Pro Max.

Even though it’s very early with a plethora of unsubstantiated rumors about the iPhone 18 Pro Max, I’ve seen enough to be glad I ignored the iPhone 17 Pro Max.

Based on years of observation regarding how Apple typically refines iPhones from one year to the next, iPhone 18 Pro Max is likely to be of significant interest to me.

I hope with a variable aperture that we’ll get a whole new main camera with an even wider aperture or somehow larger sensor so we can actually get some more noticeable depth of field to be able to control. Otherwise it won’t matter much except for certain fringe situations.

And yeah, with the camera button, swipe is finicky when you’re trying to not drop your expensive phone. Something different, smaller, and closer to the edge would be welcome. It’s just kinda awkward to use which is why I hardly use it and I’m an actual photographer.

I hear you but idk even tho I would prefer a flat back, the current/past designs not having a flat back have rarely been an issue.

the only annoyances I have had would be when the phone was on its back on a table and I have to use my pinky for some reason to operate the phone (like if a I was eating or something). the wobbling and feel of the phone would be annoying as I’m pressing on it.

and then getting it in and out of my pockets, still super easy with the camera bumps/plateu.

I haven’t worn a case in over 3 years so that helps too.

I usually don’t read stuff on products that are about a year away from release, but it’s Sunday and I’m still nursing a coffee. Okay, my third cup, but that’s fine… I also tend not to care about the iPhone overmuch (smartphones are a necessary evil to me, little more). But I will admit that the variable aperture caught my eye…

Yes, variable aperture sounds interesting, as i barely take my real DSLR, but still consider myself as a hobby photographer. On the other hand Sensor size is an Argument against big leaps to be expected.
Overall i will probably again stick to my 15PMax next year, when the battery allows it. ist really a Hardware plateau….

I doubt it would drive an upgrade for me (many mILCs in my stall) but it would be a nice bonus for whenever I do replace my 15 Pro.

Just stop with the camera bump and make the phone one thickness. I am ok with an overall thicker phone.
I would be ok with “worse” camera and thinner phone without this bump. Anyway their cameras are not as good as from their competitors to justify this fugly plateau.

After all, camera sensor sizes have only slightly increased over all these years. They have to think and introduce simpler lens designs instead of using same lenses for so many generations

Reviews seem to love the titanium iPhone Air for feel and durability. Wonder if they will bring on a titanium refresh with the vapor chamber or another heat dissipation trick? Aluminum seems to get damaged pretty easily...2027 is the 20th Anniversary iPhone or iPhone 19 if the naming is the same.
One could say that they changed back to aluminium for the pro models to make the air that much better looking due to the finish of the product

Believe me it is useless.

Had one on Galaxy S10+ in 2019, haven’t noticed any difference in sharpness.

And Samsung in fact got rid of in in the next generations of phones. It is yet another thing to break.

As for DSLR and f-value changes, gotta be honest after certain point you don’t really feel it makes a difference too, unless you doing some very specific scenarios. I almost never use values higher than f8 on my DSLR and value shutter speed much more since it gives me ability to control exposure, and how closed or open aperture is regulates the amount of light entering sensor, which is again mostly useless for me since I value more light and more sensor area. Living with fixed aperture value is totally ok in fact, and more open apertures can often create natural effect of depth of field if you use focus wisely

Very interesting to hear about translucent MagSafe area. Wonder what new colors will be there next year. Variable aperture is also possible. Not sure about a smaller dynamic island. Hoping Apple brings out at least one fun color like the Orange next year.

Oh dear, just more incremental features/changes.

Look at the iPod family (attached). Look at all the different designs, at all different price points, look at the FUN! And the 7th Gen iPod nano weighed only 31grans (1.1oz) ! (Apple have the nerve to call their new 165 gram (5.8oz) 17 phone the "Air"!).

Apple have lost the plot, their only fixation is making more and more money, how sad. There is no sense of excitement or innovation any more.

Exactly I don’t understand people now who have got a 15 pro max or 16 pro max who upgrade to the latest 17 pro max when the device they have is more than perfectly fine in every aspect and if battery life is an issue just change the battery rather than give apple more cash & if more people did that then you would get proper improvements

Wow, if they make the magsafe area translucent, I'll buy it! I can't think of more useful "feature" than this one. Also a smaller island and a processor that is 347% faster than they one I have now, although the phone behaves exactly the same way, are things to hope for. Thank you Apple for such a meaningful innovation department. Can I suggest iShit Brown as an additional color for the iPhone 18?

I have the 15 pro max and I find no reason to upgrade. A minor bump in processor speed that I will not notice (I did not notice from 11 to 12 or from 12 to 15) and minor camera upgrades that will have an insignificant impact on the photos I usually take. And I would be replacing a titanium case for a cheapo aluminum one that scratches if you stare at it for more than 30 seconds.

Exactly that’s the point
Fundamentally performance & pretty much everything else is good enough for the next few years at least

What a yawn fest. Throw another camera on the Air, bit better battery and you have perfection. Air and Fold are the future.
Has the Samsung equivalent to the air not already got that?
Plus the fold 7 is pretty impressive right now as my mum got one and she moved from an iPhone 15

Would you, really? It’s easy to say, but I bet in reality very few people would buy a 13mm phone (with today’s phone dimensions) once they check how it feels in their hands.
