I'll give you a chance by waiting until February next year to upgrade to an 18PM (though that's when my yearly carrier upgrade becomes available anyway).

I agree people should vote with their dollar, and they largely will.

It's good you didn't say boycott. Some people here have been using that word in reaction to the price increases, but it's really not the right word to use. Not buying something because it's overpriced isn't boycotting, that's just ordinary free market, which is entirely based on the principle that people will buy things that are priced according to their perceived value, and not buy things that aren't. Boycotting refers to a completely different decision-making process--price/value is ignored and the purchase decision is driven by ethics instead. Eg. many people stopped buying BP gas when they had that big oil spill--that was boycotting. Many people don't buy Bugattis because the price is astronomical--that is just the free market.

I've heard some people here assert that high prices are unethical, but that's really only the case when the customer is entitled to the product--eg. basic food/commodities/medicine--not when it's something they can absolutely live without--eg. a new flagship gadget. If any product perceived as overpriced is unethical, then every product that isn't free is unethical to someone.

Pssst…. I’ll let you in on a secret…. Apple will make more 18s if they sell out.

Apple saw the DRAM shortage coming and that’s why the pro max is being sold in September and the regular iPhone next spring.

There is no fear of missing out…. Unless you are barely getting by on your current phone….. Most people have all the time in the world to consider replacing their current phone. The consumer tech world rewards those who wait and who don’t require the latest and greatest.

The memory shortage is real, and it's not due to a shortage of raw materials.

It's due to what the big three RAM manufacturers are doing with the raw materials. They're maximizing their profits by converting most of their production lines to make the type of RAM that AI data centers will pay top (borrowed) dollar for, and making less of the type of RAM that's in our phones, desktop computers, etc., that the RAM manufacturers don't make nearly the same profit from. If nothing changes, this will continue for at least the next two years.

Is this to hype up the preorders? While everything costs more? How about just don't preorder and don't buy.

Even the majority of the modern updates one might call “big” are significantly smaller than the old “S” models of the iPhone.
The 3GS gave the iPhone its first processor bump, doubling the RAM, upping the camera from 2 megapixels to 3 megapixels, adding tap to focus, adding video recording capability, adding voice control, adding the first accessibility features, adding a compass, adding double the storage on both options, adding higher speed HSDPA 3G networking, and also received an extra two years of software support over the regular 3G.
Compared to pretty much any iPhone after the iPhone X, that’s a massive, massive upgrade.

I think iPhones are still getting important big upgrades. Variable Aperture is an insanely huge upgrade for the camera for many reasons. If you are a photographer then you will know why it’s extremely important. Want to know why iPhones are still getting huge upgrades? Compare an iPhone 12 Pro to an iPhone 14 Pro and you will tell the different right away just in 3 years. Bigger changes than iPhone 6S to iPhone 8.

To be honest, apart from the posts on this forum, I don't know anybody in the real world that gets a new iPhone every year. I am probably the most regular upgrader in my circles and I usually upgrade every 2 years. I am skipping this one though and keeping my 16 Pro Max a third year. FOMO is something I see mentioned a lot and thankfully I don't see it.

Every year! Even with no ram shortages,..Apple always seems to leak that there will be shortages, 🤣

I think I’m going to wait until someone is selling their iPhone fold on eBay for a huge discount because they smashed the inside screen. I’ll glue it shut and just use it as a normal sized phone.
 
With a price increase as large as the one leaked, I doubt there will be any stock issues. Apple knows this, and that's where these self-serving leaks come from.

Scalpers? Apple and carriers allow for backorders. If people can’t wait a few extra weeks after launch then they never to loose more money.

actually I don't have any interest in the 18 pro, as for lowering competition not so much, but lowering memory prices by reducing demand I plead guilty
 
Great, they can keep them both. Sitting out this year to await a proper Fold or the 20. My 15 Pro Max is just fine, just need to hold out on all the marketing brainwash and I should be fine.
