iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone Duo Feature Apple's New C2 Modem [Updated]

Apple today unveiled new iPhone 18 Pro models and the iPhone Duo – the company's first foldable iPhone – and both the iPhone 18 Pro and the iPhone Duo feature Apple's new custom-designed C2 modem for 5G connectivity.

Prior to today's announcements, there was speculation that Apple's C2 in-house modem would not support mmWave 5G in the U.S., and that the company would once again rely on Qualcomm to fill the gap for American carriers. Apparently, that's not the case, at least as far mmWave support goes.

Apple's press release for the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max and the tech specs page for the two models appear to indicate that the C2 modem is limited to only the smaller iPhone 18 Pro model, leaving the iPhone 18 Pro Max on Qualcomm modems. The reason for the distinction is unclear given the near identical capabilities of the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max.

Apple says the C2 brings AI-powered improvements to cellular quality and reliability, and now supports mmWave in the U.S. The company claims the C2 also delivers meaningfully faster uploads when compared to C1X while consuming 15 percent less energy.

As for mmWave support, Apple's U.S. specifications list bands n258, n260, and n261, alongside sub-6GHz 5G with 4×4 MIMO, but the UK specifications list sub-6GHz only.

Meanwhile, both models feature the N1, an Apple-designed wireless networking chip that enables Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and Thread support.

The iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max come in burgundy, glacier, silver, and black colors, with prices starting at $1,199 and $1,299, respectively. Both models come in 256GB, 512GB, 1TB, and 2TB storage options and will be available to order September 12.

iPhone Duo is available in star white and night sky colors, and starts at $1,999, coming in 256GB, 512GB, 1TB, and 2TB storage capacities. Pre-orders for the iPhone Duo begin on Friday, October 16, with availability beginning Friday, October 23.

Update: This article originally stated that all three models include the C2 modem, but it appears the iPhone 18 Pro Max does not in fact include it.

In the data leak earlier in the summer there was confirmation there would be different modems in the eSIM only vs physical SIM (international) models.

The speculation was that the US model would continue to use Qualcomm modems.

The C-series modems are so superior. It will be a huge and underrated upgrade. It was one of the best parts of the iPhone Air imo.
 
Never thought I’d consider a modem to be a selling point in upgrading, but I am curious to see if it is at the very least on par with the 17.

I’m looking forward to that privacy feature of the C-series modems, if the US carriers ever allow it.

Surprised Apple felt the need to mention this when it's been pretty well established it's more of a turn-off for consumers than something they're interested in.
 
Wow what a bummer the Pro Max doesn’t get the C2. Maybe they figured the battery life is so much better on the Max, didn’t need it for now? Maybe production issues?

This is an important transition for Apple. If they can use their own modems, they get away from the royalties that Qualcomm levies (something like 3-5% of the device selling price) it gives them a lot more pricing flexibility than without.

I suspect that C2 is still someway behind Qualcomm's chips, otherwise Apple would have introduced them across the line-up. But given the high cost of the royalties, the investment in their own modem tech will pay dividends quickly if they can get away from Qualcomm patents.

This is what I'm interested in. They took Intel modem knowledge and we all know how unreliable Intel was and they couldn't get 5G working on the same level as Qualcomm. At least that is what I remembered reading.

It's listed on their Canadian site as having the C2 modem, interesting they aren't giving it to the US customers

Better to let them know up front if it’s a turn-off. There’s lots of other phones on the market for those folks and they can now confidently take their dollars elsewhere. Meanwhile, for those that don’t care, they’re getting more effective on-device signal analysis.
 
I wonder does the US-market iPhone 18 Pro Max use a modified Qualcomm Snapdragon X85 modem? I really doubt they would use the Snapdragon X105 modem.

I believe it's not using C2 due to the fact it lacks support for some of the Verizon mmWave frequencies.

why would this be a turn off? I'd do anything to get better cell signal

Qualcomm was first mentioning that their latest modem is "AI-powered"

Intel has never been interested in efficient and performant. They make big power guzzling chips and turn off parts until it meets the poor specs that make their high end products look so great. They were never ever going to compete on cellular phones. That some folks in Intel thought they could change the culture is cute. 🙂

Meanwhile, Intel crows about how they’re more powerful than Apple Silicon… when compared against Apple’s prior generation. 🙂 The day that changes is the day that I think Intel is worth their stock price.
