An alleged solder joint diagram for Apple's A20 Pro chip suggests the processor will deliver a number of significant upgrades, including a seven-core GPU, a wider memory interface, and a larger L2 cache for its efficiency cores.

The claims come from a Weibo user who says the layout was reconstructed by mapping the chip's solder ball positions and overlaying them with die level images to sketch out where each block of the processor sits. According to the post, the resulting outline points to a two and four core CPU configuration and a seven core GPU, with the top of the die housing the GPU and the CPU occupying the center.

Based on the layout, the leaker expects the A20 Pro's efficiency cores to share an 8MB L2 cache, up from 6MB on the A19 Pro, while the performance cores retain their existing 16MB L2 cache. The size of the shared system level cache is not yet known, but the leaker believes it is unlikely to shrink given the chip's new image signal processor and neural engine.

With regards to the GPU, the seven core configuration would mark an increase from the six cores on the A19 Pro, a jump of roughly 16%. The leak also points to a 96-bit memory interface for LPDDR5x RAM, up from the 64-bit interface on the A19 Pro, a 50% increase that would meaningfully boost memory bandwidth. Graphics performance tends to scale with memory bandwidth, so the wider bus could have an additional impact on top of the additional GPU core.

The A20 Pro is highly likely to debut the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max next week. It could also be used in Apple's first foldable iPhone.

Memory bandwidth increase, more GPU's clearly prepping for edge LLMs. As inference is very much constrainted by memory bandwidth. Memory bandwidth is an area where Apple (memory bandwidth) is already way ahead of the competition.
 
Thought there are yearly speed and efficiency improvements, don't think there will be any noticeable difference in day to day usage. A 17 Pro/Pro Max should function just as good as the upcoming 18 Pro/Pro Max.

Weirdly enough, I agree. It’s hard to be excited about this when it’s just going to be paired with janky software that needs a new major OS release every year until it’s dropped. On top of it all, “apps” that we pay for and don’t own that also get their own set of updates until our device gets dropped or it runs terribly.

It doesn’t feel magical anymore.
 
Doom scrolling IG will be that much more snappy.
What's funny is "doom scrolling IG" on a Moto Razr Ultra flip phone that I picked up to play with is so ridiculously fast compared to scrolling IG on my iP17PM, it's not even close. I doubt iOS will ever catch up.
 
I always get a little chuckle at the performance gains when the apps/software we use doesn't even scratch the surface of what these chips are truly capable of. Point in case - the macbook neo using an iphone chip.

Such a shortsighted comment. Better chips (and hopefully more RAM) enable better local models, so more can be done on device without needing to talk to a remote model. You might not care, but many do. I, for example, care about this a lot.
 
As for the last few iPhones I’ve owned, I’ve never noticed anything slow about it. It does everything I wanted to do. So these updates don’t affect me. But I’m also glad that Apple is trying to make things better for those that need it. Can’t imagine what that is that you don’t already have.
