The flock is probably right this likely not a huge update, but I'll be watching the stream and hoping, nevertheless.

The chips improve every single year and, unless one attempts to navigate a spaceship with an iPhone, there is very little perceptible difference to the user between iPhone 15 Pro, 16 Pro or 17 Pro.

Considering the rumoured higher prices this year, however, Apple will need to do better than merely quoting “an X%” gains, IMO.

Memory bandwidth increase, more GPU's clearly prepping for edge LLMs. As inference is very much constrainted by memory bandwidth. Memory bandwidth is an area where Apple (memory bandwidth) is already way ahead of the competition.

If you want top tier model the compute part must be provided through cloud it could be either public (openAI, Anthropic etc) or private (Apple PCC). You can do some stuff locally but it will be limited to baby computing in the grand scheme of things. When Apple Intelligence will do really complex stuff like top tier LLMs it will be unlocked thanks to their PCC infra not your on device soc.
Don’t be fooled by marketing especially when it targets average retail consumer

Count me among those who aren’t so sure the added GPU and memory bandwidth improvements are all that important to me on my phone.

And they'll be in the same boat as last year: all the power but nary a flex. The S26 Ultra is on par now for video and image quality. What separates both phones is software and Apple are falling behind in an area they can't afford to.

There is still no built-in manual overrides. Still no new gaming commissions. Still no new battery tech. The Chinese brands now last 2-3 days and charge to full in an hour.

I always get a little chuckle at the performance gains when the apps/software we use doesn't even scratch the surface of what these chips are truly capable of. Point in case - the macbook neo using an iphone chip.

So very true. I replaced my 2019 Intel i9 MBP 15” TouchBar 32gb/1tb with an M4 Air 32gb/1tb last year.

I paid less than half for the Air than what I did for the 2019 machine. My wallet is grateful! 😀
