No, which is why it historically got neglected compared to the MacBook Air.
And yet they continue to sell it.

The iPhone mini is not a normal sized phone in 2025. It’s a tiny phone with bad battery life that isn’t popular at all. The iPhone 16e is a MUCH better phone for mainstream users, even despite the higher price.
Of course it's a normal-sized phone. Hands haven't gotten any bigger. The mere fact that people are asking for controls to be moved to the bottom of the screen is proof that phablets are bad for actual usability; they're meant only for watching videos on the couch, not for actual mobile use.

You're objectively wrong.

M4 and M4 Pro Mac Minis are an absolute banger, they always get the treatment they deserve. Macbook Air doesn't even get the M4 Pro, does it?

The iPhone Mini is a normal sized phone period. It's what a phone should be, and you should be able to use it single-handedly. It has good battery life on iOS 18, especially if you aren't the sort who spends 5 hours a day on doomscrolling tick tock and instagram or youtube.

The reason why Mini "failed" (if you can call it that, still sold a good amount of units - over 30 million units sold is not a small number) was the price and the offering in their lineup at the time. You have absolutely no clue how many people love the 12 and 13 Mini. Combined they sold over 30 million units, that's at least a good chunk of the same people waiting for a newer Mini model. You will find many people who are tired of phablets and only come to realize how good a normal sized phone feels like once they hold it in their hand.

That's it! People that are glued to their phone all day long love phablets, of course they do. Big screen is immersive, perfect for doom scrolling. Majority of people grab their phone every time they don't know what else to do with their hands. Last time I was at the dentist, the waiting room had roughly 10 people waiting and every single one of them was glued with their face to their phone. That's why the majority buys phablets! As you said, Mac Mini continues to sell less than other Macs, but it's still there and doing really well for itself. Apple should give us a normal iPhone back, and continue sell whatever the hell people want to consume their content on at the same time.

Historically the Mac mini got updated much, much less frequently than the MacBook Air.

In more recent times, the Mac mini skipped the entire M3 generation. I also expect it to skip the M5 generation too.

It’s no longer 2018. In 2025 a 5.4” phone is considered very small. That is the size of some el cheapo garbage Android phones, but even the vast majority of those available at the larger carriers here these days are 6.0” or larger.

I suggest you have a look around. 5.4” objectively is no longer considered mainstream, even at the low end.

Oh I've looked around alright, I know quite well that normal sized phones aren't mainstream. People want phablets for doomscrolling instagram, isn't as immersive on 5.4" screen. They need a Max, or better, I saw someone here mention they would carry around an iPad if it supported calls over cellular (which I'm not sure whether it was sarcasm or not, as it sounds quite ridiculous). Anyhow, Apple would be wise to meet people's needs, as that's what they used to be about.

So again no under the glass fingerprint??? I want fingerprint back! Face ID fails in so many situations.

I appreciate your response, but this doesn’t sound like the Steve’s Apple way of doing things. That sounds more like HTC or Samsung or Nokia’s Lumia mentality and reasoning - accepting limitations today’s tech in phones and thus making bulky uncomfortable and heavy devices? Looking at what can’t be done rather than bruteforcing innovation?

Apple can have all the gimmicks in a Pro device, but a regular iPhone should be compact easy to use with one hand and pack a punch, just like the 12 Mini and 13 Mini. They could literally improve these two with today’s tech. If they can make a phone as thin as the rumored 17 Air, I’m pretty sure they can make a new “Mini”. How much of a camera do you really need for everyday tasks as a non-Pro iPhone user? How many hours do you intend to spend on doomscrolling scrolling ticktock and watching Youtube that you need a phablet sized iPhone? I use an iPhone for quick emails, calls, music, a few messages here and there, slither.io on the loo and a few photos, carplay, apple pay, basic things. I don’t need a phablet to consume media all day long, I don’t need 3 gigantic cameras since I’m not a photographer, I only bought the Pro so that it lasts a few years of hardware demands by the upcoming iOS versions, but I hate this form factor. I do love the build quality, pro motion, taptic engine and the island, these are all fantastic features and if this was in the same form factor as 13 Mini, I would not say a word. I’m pretty sure Apple with it’s resources is fully capable of making an actual iPhone that isn’t a phablet, but their brain goes where the money is, and that’s because the company is run by accountants and not visionaries and it shows - just look at the Vision Pro fiasco, what the hell is even that?! :D They lost so much money on this thing and continue to lose money on it, while they kill off the “Mini” models of iPhone (which shouldn’t even be called a Mini, it’s just s regular iPhone) because it sold less than a phablet, but so did the Max models. A visionary isn’t tied to today’s tech, if Jobs was still at Apple, he would definitely have the balls to tell you to go and buy a phablet elsewhere, we’re making an iPhone and an iPhone should never be a phablet. Today’s iPhone lineup doesn’t represent iPhone’s core values, and Max models are a total abomination good for nothing else but doomscrolling, and since doomscrolling is what majority of people do these days, we’ll continue to get phablets instead of phones since that’s where the money is and that’s all Apple’s accountant of a CEO and the rest of them care about.

I want a normal sized iPhone, stop treating me like I’m asking for a flying car.
“Normal” sized is a constantly evolving thing. What is normal now is not the same normal as 15 years ago. If the iPhone mini had sold well it would have stayed around. I know 1 person with an iPhone mini, whereas the majority of my friends have Plus or Max iPhones 🤷🏼‍♀️

Personally, I would like something smaller than the regular iPhone, but I think 5.4 inches was just too small. I think 5.8” would have sold much better, and with the move to 6.3” screens on the base model maybe there is room in the lineup for a 5.8” phone now? The iPhone X/11 Pro were peak iPhone imo

It's my bias, but I think in 2025 the XR's size is peak iPhone sizing for the mainstream, and it's what I bought for my wife in 2018 to replace her 6s. Interestingly, it's the same 6.1" size as the 16e, which I just bought for my kid.

Because of what I thought would be good for a mainstream user in 2022, back then I suggested she replace her 6.1" XR with a 6.1" iPhone 14 Pro, but she insisted on getting something bigger, so in the end I got her the 6.7" iPhone 14 Pro Max instead. She much prefers the 14 Pro Max size over all of her previous iPhones, and she's about as non-techie as they come. Well, not 90 year-old grandma non-techie, but non-techie nonetheless. (eg. After I got her the M4 MacBook Air that can charge over USB-C instead of MagSafe, she asked why we never charged her 2017 MacBook with one of the other "holes" instead of using that giant MagSafe charger.)

In the fall, I will buy a 17 Pro Max for myself, and in two years my wife will likely get the 19 Pro Max (unless perhaps there is a nice flip iPhone or something by then).

Would it be correct to assume your friends spend way too much time on the phone?

Stop being rude, and stop making assumptions. Like I said, you may prefer smaller phones, but most people prefer bigger phones these days. And, no, spending too much time on the phone isn't really a reason people go with larger phones. They may go with larger phones because of the additional screen real estate, the easier ability to type, the fact that larger screens put less strain on one's eyes and the fact that you don't have to have your phone as close to your face, or just because they want a bigger phone.

But even if they do spend a lot of time on their phone, so what? What difference does that make? We've already established that you use your phone for certain things. Other people use their phone for other things that you don't. And there is literally not a single problem with that.

Many people use their phones for things other than just doomscrolling Instagram or other apps. Games exist, as does content consumption, reading, texting friends, video calling, etc. Please stop criticizing people for getting larger phones and then proceeding to pretend to understand that you know what people use these devices for even though you don't. Because many usecases exist for larger phones, you just don't want to acknowledge that they exist.

Mmmmm, I can’t speak for them, but they use them for a lot of things, they’re very social. A lot of group chats on Whatsapp and Instagram, Partiful, texting, Discord, Youtube, etc. I don’t really notice them using their phones a lot while socializing though, except to take pictures or look something up. This is a SoCal perspective though, people do get out of the house quite a lot here.

I would say I use my phone too much, to the point that I’m considering switching to a dumb phone. The larger size of the Plus makes it a lot easier to type, but I don’t think it’s contributed to more phone use. My personal vice is Youtube, I watch a lot of current event stuff which is how I stay up to date on news, but I think it’s been bad for my mental health tbh

If your mental health is being impacted by watching current event stuff, I'd suggest you stop and watch something else. The news is constantly depressing and saddening; it's why I rarely read the news. I use YouTube to watch videos about tech, gaming, cities, major construction projects, niche products, etc though, and thats a lot more fun and interesting.

I don’t think I was being rude, it’s a simple question to determine the target audience for phablet users. There’s no problem, of course not, I’m not sure why asking for a normal sized (talking 13 Mini sized) phone is such a trigger here.

Well, some of the policies the current administration is pushing through may negatively impact me, I’m kind of in one of the groups they seem to be targeting for whatever reason, so I try to stay abreast of what’s going on. I watch plenty of other stuff on youtube too that’s tech/gaming/music related. Maybe I should try to cut back though since it’s stressing me out so much. Thanks :3

Get an old iPod, put some lo-fi on it and take your dog for a nice long walk. If you don’t have a dog, take a walk to the next shelter and adopt one. Everytime I get too hooked on all this internet, this is what helps a lot. All the negativity that even I give in to just seems to be bouncing off me after that.

Apple keeping the display sizes is bad news for those who prefer smaller (or "normal sized") iPhone. The iPhone 13 Mini is the last phone I would call an iPhone and not an iPhablet, and seeing how the iOS 26 beta is literally whipping the hardware, it's not looking good. I know we're in our first beta, but you can only "optimize" that much. Keeping the 13 Mini on iOS 18 will keep us going for a little longer, but the hardware just isn't ready for 26. It's the iOS 7 on iPhone 4S scenario all over again. I couldn't care less about an even larger display and a larger phablet, I'm sick of having a phone that's pulling my pants down.
the 12 and 13 minis were already apple's attempt at smaller phones, and they did not sell well at all, hence why they stopped making minis. clearly there's not enough people who care about having a smaller phone to justify it.
